The Chick Gave Me Feelings So I Wrote This

Summary:

A chick falls from its nest, and he is forced to use his feather coat to keep it warm. Based on Oda's cover art of the same prompt.

Or: A canon divergent AU where Doflamingo breaks out of Impel Down with Tux's help. They rescue a chick and decide not to kill it. A shocking revelation stops Doffy from slicing her open.

Notes:

Tux has devilish wings because her fruit has devil motifs (it's too long to explain here) but it's not really classified as a winged fruit like Marco's because she's truly just like a chicken who can only fly for a few seconds and her wings are thin as hell anyway (they're mostly just there for decoration and lore reasons)

She also regenerates when attacked (this is very important) but I'll spare u the lore explanations why bec it's too long and probably gonna bore you like you're listening to a lecture about general relativity (unless you're into that stuff)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The Chick Gave Me Feelings So I Wrote This

My writing is rusty as fuck and also Doflamingo and Tux are so hard to write in general EVEN MORE IN A WHOLESOME WAY so I know I will die, but it must be written because no one else will do it but ME. Also a manga edit of the prompt I drew will be at the end of the chapter!!

===================================================

A chick had fallen from its nest.

It cried incredibly loud considering the extent of its injuries. Sprained wings, broken legs, and a huge, swelling lump on the side of its head.

Doflamingo and Tuxaia looked briefly over the chick as they walked. One more step and either of them could have easily broken its bones and crushed its tiny organs under the most minimal amount of pressure. No animal in the vicinity had looked as fragile as this small, dying bird. It was the very manifestation of the things they hated the most—the fragility, naivety, and the powerlessness to change its own fate. It tossed and turned uncontrollably, in a desperate and miserable attempt to make the pain disappear.

Doflamingo was displeased by this blatant display of enfeeblement, and instantly raised his left leg with every intention to distort it beyond recognition and silence it forever. Tuxaia only stood by and watched, sharing the exact same sentiments and vexations.

However, just as Doflamingo was about to bring his feet down, the bird stood up, wobbling, and began to scream at them violently, flapping its wings in a crazed state yet made no effort to move out of Doflamingo's range. Could it be..?

Was it trying to face him head on?

Doflamingo withdrew his leg, and both he and Tuxaia were chuckling at the bird’s tenacity and worthless courage. The creature seemed to remind them of a certain ill-stricken child with skin as pale as his hat. The chick cocked its head to the side. Its thick feathers stretched outward as if to seem larger. It had seemed to realize that Doflamingo withdrawing his leg didn't mean that it was safe at last.

The taller man pointed upwards, and the lady grew beautiful, long dark wings that sprouted from the base of her back. She flew towards the top of the tree, looked around for a moment, then shook her head. The tall man frowned this time, but not deep enough to indicate sadness. Just mild irritation, and something else that didn't quite surface onto his features.

"Just as I thought. It has been abandoned." The lady flew down and landed squarely on his shoulders in a sitting position. The man didn't seem to mind. "There were traces of headless worms and other bits and pieces of a typical bird diet, including feathers that were not its own."

He placed a hand on her hip and sat comfortably under the tree where it fell from. "Wild animals tend to leave the weak behind. It's only natural."

The chick flared up again, charging its way towards the taller man, yet small, delicate pale hands obstructed its path. It looked around, only to see the winged woman staring at it indifferently. How did she get here so fast? It began charging again, slashing her hand mercilessly with its beak, but the wounds kept disappearing even when it tried to attack in different places. Taking advantage of this confusion, the lady cupped the bird in her hands, restraining it from moving with precise movements to block it out. She seemed to do this without much effort exerted on her part.

"Hmm." She raised the chick slightly upwards. "Upon closer inspection, this seems to be a common bird of this region. This one's aggressiveness is completely unheard of, though."

The man laughed coolly. "That's true; Bird chicks are usually stupid, but this one seems to be born with a slightly bigger brain."

She replied with a shallow laugh of her own as they observed the bird briefly one more time.

"Hey, Doffy," She turned to him, placing the bird in his direction. "This one's trembling. I think we need something nest-like and spacious."

The man—Doffy's frown deepened. "Tsukushi. You are not going to—"

Before the chick knew it, it was surrounded in a warm, feathered field of pink that extended as far as its little eyes could see. It felt oddly nostalgic and pleasant. Like a pile of warm, feathered bodies that cuddled up together amidst cold storms and windy days. The gaping mouths and hungry siblings that awaited their turn.

The chick nestled comfortably albeit haughtily, closing its eyes triumphantly and chirping swiftly as if to imitate a human's huff. Doffy was frowning the entire time as he watched it settle down. He immediately turned towards Tsukishi and made his displeasure apparent.

"It's only for a while," she reassured indifferently. "Don't worry too much."

The veins on his forehead ticked with every word. "This is an enormous waste of time."

"Then you can leave if you want to." Tsukishi said without making eye contact. "I'm going to fatten him up for my barbecue."

The chick's eyes widened for a second, somehow turning to Doffy for help, but though his eyes were hidden beneath his red sunglasses, its instincts told it that his expression now was nothing short of murderous towards the winged lady. She appeared unfazed by this, and actually smiled when he gave her those killer glares. Maybe he actually hates barbecues…?

"We can't stay here for too long." The frustration from the lady's sick joke never left his face as he reached for something in his pocket. It was a band-aid, slightly worn out at the edges. "Let's patch this little shit up and leave."

Even the seemingly uncaring winged lady seemed slightly surprised by this. "Do you always carry those around?"

The taller man refused to reply.

She pressed on further, "For who…"

Doffy threw a bandage her way and she barely caught it with her fingers.

The usual smile instantly returned to his face. "I was hoping you would lose your balance from that and snap your neck open."

She glared at him ominously. "What are you, ten?"

He chuckled darkly. "It was payback, my little contractor."

Tuxaia seethed at the mockery in every single word he just uttered.

"First, the lump," He said, changing the topic expertly. "The rest of its injuries are internal. If it dies out here, I don't give a damn. The weak cannot choose their place to die."

The lady sat and hugged her knees, fidgeting with the band-aid he just gave her. Her face was a grand mixture of indignation, disgust and that of compassion. It was lost on the chick on which emotion weighed greater over the other. She casted her gaze downwards and told him, "I might be able to perform basic first aid if I just have the right tools."

As Doffy struggled to place a band-aid on the enraged chick, he frowned once more and didn't make eye contact. "Fine, suit yourself. But my coat—"

She looked at him with expectant eyes, and the edges of the man's frown tugged lower.

"I should gouge your eyes out and see if you have more to say."

She knew that he meant it, but found it endearing nevertheless. He could definitely do better than that. "Think about it, Doffy. It is far more thrilling to raise a chick and devour it yourself. You understand that feeling, don't you? Too well , in fact."

Doffy caught the transparent implications and frowned even more. "You're wrong to think that you can insult me just because you got me out of Impel Down, you little bitch ."

She laughed quietly. "You're still as irascible as ever. Would it kill you to take a joke?"

The chick had a feeling that this taller man was always smiling and gloating at the weak for most of his life, and that this was the most he had frowned in a long time. This lady was actually amazing in the most horrible way.

Nevertheless, the man caught himself in a restrained fit of laughter as he held the chick in place and plastered the band-aid over its lump. His smile was wider than ever in respite. "This is nostalgic, Tsukushi." came an odd set of words from the man, "I've forgotten even the color of your blood."

"Really," She said, her expression unreadable as she placed a band-aid over the chick as well. "That used to be your favorite."

He laughed. "Interests naturally change over time." His smile did not fade, but it seemed strangely softer as he placed a hand over hers. "Impel Down made me realize a few things."

The woman seethed and pushed him away, but he was able to pull her to him impossibly closer. She was strikingly smaller than him in comparison. So much so that even a wild animal thought that the way he manhandled her up until now would break her apart, but that didn't stop the taller man from doing it. He seemed to relish in her pain.

He allowed his hands to roam freely on her body as he spoke, "I realized it would be way more painful for you if I started to slice up your organs from within your body with my strings. How does internal bleeding sound, hm? It is the closest thing I can imagine to witnessing you truly losing your life. It must feel far more exquisite than just decapitating you or shooting you to death." His hands stopped at her stomach, and for the umpteenth time today, he frowned once more. He seemed startled by a sudden discovery. "You…"

He was suddenly at loss for words.

"I take it you're skilled at slicing up an infant as well?" Tsukushi challenged him back, pushing him slightly downwards with a strange smile. "Very well, you might as well take it out and serve it on a silver platter, wring his blood out and serve it as an entree. Season it and drink it with wine. That should suffice, shouldn't it?"

"'His'," He seemed genuinely surprised. "So it’s a boy."

"Certainly," She replied, pushing him down completely now. "This should be one of the things you realized in Impel Down, hm?"

Doffy laughed at the mockery in her tone, but the utter disbelief and genuine incredulity never left him. "You're surprisingly stupid. How could the owner of the throne of Ace be so ignorant ? You shouldn't keep these kinds of things to yourself."

"Apologies," she said, caressing his face. "The faces you make when you're backed into a corner provide for me the highest form of entertainment. Nothing else in this world comes close to it."

"I surmise it's not entirely impossible." He said, placing his hand on her arm as if to break it. "Not after you begged me to put a child in—"

Both the edges of her wings and her tail reached for three of his vital organs. His smile grew more triumphant and cocky. It’s either she stabbed him or he broke her arm first. The lady grimaced and reddened whilst narrowing her eyes at him. "One of these days, I ought to find a way to break our contract."

He laughed again. "You're going to break my heart, Tsukushi. Not when something is binding us stronger than ever. Besides, I can't let you run away now with this new knowledge." He sat up and held her in his arms. The woman seemed begrudgingly disposed to the physical contact. "I want to closely observe as our child infects you from within."

Her voice was muffled as he buried her in his wide chest. "You're going to be a terrible father."

"And you're going to be the dutiful mother who will attend to his every need."

"Sure, Doffy. So I can train this child to hate you so feverishly he will kill you out of his own volition. Yes, exactly as I did 31 years ago. An exact replica."

"One of you is already a handful. How terrifying it would be to have two Tsukushis coming after my life."

"I already have a name."

"It better not be a crackjaw like your alias."

She pulled away and he let her. Doffy observed her with a sneer. "You're the one named Donquixote Doflamingo."

He laughed. "It's not that difficult. You're exaggerating."

"Our names have four syllables. This one has two."

"So you reduced it by half, what difference does it make?"

"He would be nothing like you, then."

"You're not certain about that."

"But—"

The chick croaked at them, as if to ask if they were forgetting something. The lady stood up and didn't forget to give him a light kick before she set foot on the grass.

"I'm going to name him BBQ."

"Terrible."

"I mean the chick, you idiot."

The man followed her and scooped the chick up with his coat. There was nothing delicate nor affectionate about the way he carried it, but somehow, it was not difficult to tell that he was trying not to harm it in any way.

“This chick better imprint on you so I can be rid of it.”

She leaned forward as she walked. “Too late.”

The little bird was happily snuggling against him and the feathers. The veins on his forehead grew with each mirthful chirp.

“Isn’t that good enough?” She said, placing a hand over her mouth. “It’s good training for you.”

He clenched his teeth scornfully. “You had best be prepared for 9 months worth of anguish after your term.”

“Oh, I’m looking forward to it.”

==============================================

“Tsuku! There’s trouble!” Trebol huffed and puffed as he opened the door to her nursery, pointing outside her window with trembling hands. “It’s BBQ! It’s wreaking havoc in the guest room! They were all important clients!”

“Don’t worry, Trebol.” She said while examining all the paperwork on her desk. “Wild animals have good instincts. He wasn’t trained for months just to attack indiscriminately. It’s probably Doffy’s doing.”

“Behehe! Well, I figured. I just wanted to see if you’d be panicked about it! So? Is that why that massive bird is gouging their eyes out with its beak?”

“Oh, wonderful. The neck would have been most optimal. I wonder why he went for the eyes.”

“He said he was sending you a message.” Trebol’s snot was dangling from his nose when he stepped inside. Tuxaia quickly coated a scrap paper with haki and threw them to pin the man in his place.

“Logia users are such a pain.” she said. “You can talk to me from there.”

“Behehe! Sorry, Tsuku. I didn’t mean to dirty your nursery. After all, you’re carrying Doffy’s-”

She raised another blackened paper at him and threatened him nonchalantly, “Another word out of you and I’ll make it so that you can never conceive a child.”

“S-Spare me! Beheh!”

“Tell this to Doffy for me, Trebol.” She lowered the paper and wore the most twisted smile he has ever seen on her face in thirty one years. “Tell him it’s going to be exceedingly difficult for him to do as he pleases this time around.”

Meanwhile, in the guest room, Doflamingo was proudly ruffling the bird’s feathers as he looked upon the magnificent array of dead bodies from his throne. He laughs maniacally, unable to contain himself. “Just torturing these worms doesn’t feel the same. Tsukushi. You are the only woman who has tantalized me to my limits.”

Tuxaia and Doflamingo chuckled at the same time in different rooms, but they said the exact same thing:

“I can’t wait to see you teetering over the edge of death again.”

Notes:

Dream AU where they have a kid because I am a sucker for a happy family.... Even for me, this is still a divergence AU... they are too busy destroying the world to think about raising a family...

but I feel like they would be terrible, terrible parents anyway LMAO
