Work Text:

Rhaenyra should probably intervene.

It was what any responsible adult would do, never mind a responsible parent. But Rhaenyra was tired and this was probably the most entertainment she had had since becoming a mother.

The sight of her little brother - who had very obviously given his nannies the slip again - trying and failing to peek over the top of Jaces crib was adorable and Rhaenyra had to hold back a giggle when a particularly exuberant attempt resulted in Aegon stumbling to the floor.

The golden hatchling perched on Aegons shoulder shrieked when Aegons tumble dislodged him, little wings beating furiously to keep him afloat. Aegon just pouted at his companion, crossing his arms with a huff as the young dragon settled itself upon her son’s crib.

Rhaenyra took that as her cue to move forward, wary of how close Aegons hatchling was getting to her newborn son. Young as he was, she doubted he could conjure a flame yet but a hatchlings claws were sharp enough to cause her some concern.

“I do believe that this room is only meant to contain one little dragon.” Aegon yelped as she appeared from beyond the doorway she had been hiding in, his hatchling screeching in offence as he clumsily glided down to put himself between Aegon and the intruder. Rhaenyra chuckled as Aegon scrambled to calm his hatchling.

Rhaenyra crouched down to hold a hand out for the little dragon to sniff, pleased when this hatchling of Syrax’s seemed to recognise his mother’s scent upon Rhaenyra and simply sat back once satisfied of his cradle mates safety.

“I just wanted to introduce Jace to my dragon.” Aegon pouted up at her, his eyes widening under her querying gaze. “I already introduced him to Helaena and Aemond and even to Mama!”

“Well, in that gaze…” Rhaenyra made a show of considering her little brothers words, tilting her head to hide her fond smile as Aegon hatchling joined in, staring up at her with a air akin to his pleading companion. “I suppose I could make an exception.”

Aegon cheered at her words, lifting his arms to her in silent askance as his hatchling scrambled to launch itself into the air.

Rhaenyra huffed as she hoisted Aegon on her hip, biting back a hiss as her body brutally reminded her of the labour she had undertaken not a week ago. Aegon, oblivious to her pain, shifted eagerly in her arms as she brought him over to where Jacaerys had curled himself around his cradle egg.

Aegon quieted as he caught sight of his sleeping nephew, leaning forward as his golden hatchling took up his former place at the head of the crib. Rhaenyra watched on fondly as Aegon excitedly chattered at his sleeping nephew, nattering on about how his egg had hatched not a day after his birth and how excited he was for Jaces own egg to hatch so they could train their hatchlings together.

“Have you named him yet?” Rhaenyra spoke when Aegon paused to take a breath.

“No.” Aegon shook his head, squirming in her grip until she set him down gently. “Father said that a dragons name is important and that I shouldn’t rush to name him.”

“Wise words.” Rhaenyra hummed, settling herself onto the small stool set next to Jaces crib. “I myself named Syrax for the goddess of Old Valyria, did you know that?”

“Uh huh.” Aegon nodded rapidly, plonking himself next to her so that he could lean against her leg. “I learnt about her from Maester Arden. But I don’t like any of them for him.”

“Well,” Rhaenyra hummed in consideration, dropping one hand to stroke through his silver curls. “Laenor named his dragon Seasmoke because his scales are reminiscent of the sea. Perhaps you can name your little hatchling like that?”

“He is golden.” Aegon considered, tilting his head cutely as his eyes started to droop. “Maybe… maybe I can name him Sun.”

“Sun would be a lovely name.” Rhaenyra chuckled, shifting the boy to lean against some of the numerous pillows that were scattered around the room. “Perhaps when you wake up you can see how he likes it?”

“Ok.” Aegon yawned, going easily when she lowered him to the ground. “Night Nyra, love you.”

Rhaenyra could feel her heart about to burst, her face soft as she watched the little boy curl up with his hatchling.

“I love you too, Egg.”
