Belching loudly, Luffy sighed in satisfaction as he rubbed his swollen stomach, having just finished dinner with his crewmates. Reclining back, he interlaced his fingers and used them as a cushion, savoring the peaceful moment atop the Thousand Sunny's head. There was nothing greater than this feeling—the cool night breeze caressing his skin, the salty tang of the sea air filling his nostrils, and the soothing sound of Brook's violin drifting up from the lawn deck below, where most of his crew chatted and laughed.
As Luffy gazed up at the darkening sky, he breathed in deeply, savoring the moment and letting the air out slowly through his nose. It was during these peaceful nights, when the noise around him morphed into a soothing hum and the sky above enveloped him, that reality seemed to catch up with his optimism. The last few years had truly tested him in ways he could have never imagined, breaking him down and molding him, forever altering his perspective on the world. Death, once a mere shadow, had become a tangible presence, something he had felt in his very arms, lurking behind the fogged eyes of his own brother. It was no longer an abstract concept, but a force that could he touch—or rather, could touch him.
“Oh wow!” Chopper exclaimed excitedly from below.
Blinking, Luffy’s eyes became filled with the stars above. He marveled at the sheer number of stars that peppered the blackness, each one a brilliant flicker of illumination that danced and sparkled like diamonds scattered across a velvet sheet. The longer he stared, the more his eyes adjusted, revealing layer upon layer of patterns and clusters—some bright and bold, others soft and hazy.
“I heard there would be a meteor shower tonight from some of the locals at our last stop.” Robin spoke gently. “I bet it’s going to be breathtaking.”
“How splendid! I’ll play something with a bit more romance! Yohohoho!” Brook cheered, playing something with a slow melody.
The past few years had been rough, but they had also been the best years of Luffy’s life.
It felt like only yesterday when Luffy left Foosha Village to begin his adventure for the One Piece. In the blink of an eye, the past few years had flown by—finding his crew, exploring islands, and meeting all sorts of people along the way. Now, Luffy had achieved his dream of becoming the King of the Pirates, and the One Piece was safely secured.
Though world peace was still a work in progress, Luffy had full faith in Koby, Sabo, and Vivi to figure it out. If anyone could solve the world's problems, it was that trio. Luffy and his crew were venturing back towards the East Blue. While some of the crew had accomplished their dreams by reaching Laugh Tale, others still had a long way to go, so Luffy wanted to sail around again, starting from the very beginning.
A deep sense of serenity washed over him, and he sighed with a different kind of satisfaction.
He couldn’t remember the last time he saw a meteor shower, but possibly, it was back when he was a kid. He, Ace, and Sabo would often camp outside, going to sleep as they gazed up at the stars. He did remember seeing it at least one time though and he would never forget how pretty it was. Now it would be even better since he had the best seat on the ship and the clearest view of the sky.
Luffy sat up and stretched his neck, frowning as a thought crossed his mind. Scanning the deck, he spotted Robin, Franky, Chopper, and Usopp huddled on the grass near the foremast, while Brook stood apart, violin still in hand. Peering upwards, Luffy saw Jinbei at the helm, mouth agape in awe as he gazed skyward. Sanji was likely still cleaning up from dinner, and Zoro was more interested in weight training than stargazing.
Which left one person still unaccounted for.
Securing his hat on his head, Luffy jumped down on the grass, doing a once over on the deck just in case he missed her, but was disappointed to find that Nami was indeed not out there.
“She’s in our room.” Robin said gently with a smile, drawing his attention. “She said she was going to do some reading before bed.”
“Does she know about the meteor shower?” Usopp asked. “I bet she’d hate to miss it.”
Luffy hurried away without waiting for Robin's response, knowing it didn't matter. Nami likely had no idea about the meteor shower, or had simply forgotten, but he knew she would have loved to see it—it was one of the few things she treasured more than money or tangerines. As he quickly made his way to the stairs, the creaking wood echoed his quickened pace, his chest tightening at the thought of Nami missing the shower and the disappointment that would cross her face.
Or worse, she may cr—
“Nami!” He yelled, yanking open her door.
Nami's book tumbled to the floor with a thud as she cried out in surprise. Her eyes widened and her mouth fell open as she stared at him. He grinned, chuckling to himself at her startled expression. After a few seconds, Nami's face flushed pink and she swung her legs over the bed's edge.
"Luffy! You scared me half to death!" she yelled, her voice laced with annoyance. "You have to knock first. I could've been changing clothes!" Nami hurled one of the pillows from her bed in his direction, but Luffy stretched his head out of the way, his laughter growing louder at her outburst. Her cheeks puffed out in frustration as she continued to hurl another pillow at him, but this time Luffy caught it, stepping closer to her bed. Nami quickly snatched the pillow back from his hands, going to retrieve the other one as she mumbled curses directed at him under her breath. Luffy felt his chest swell just by looking at her.
Luffy found himself thinking of Nami as "cute" more and more these days, captivated by her small mannerisms. Like the way her face would flush with anger as she lectured him, or how she would puff out her cheeks when she was particularly annoyed. He loved the way her eyes were eyes lit up and how she would clap her hands together when she was excited, or how her nose scrunched when she and Jinbei were busy planning the next course.
He cherished the moments they spent alone together, whether she was charting on her maps quietly or they sat by the rail, chatting as he fished. Luffy relished the times she would sit close to him at meals or gently play with his hair as he rested in her lap. He craved her company, feeling agitated when they were apart for even a few hours, but the moment he saw her again, all his strange, shadowy feelings seemed to melt away. She made him feel both lighter and stronger, a weird sensation that Luffy found addictive.
Biting the inside of his cheek to suppress his laughter, Luffy reached for Nami's hands, quietly pulling her through the door. As much as he loved poking fun at her and seeing those adorable reactions, there wasn't time for this playful banter right now. Nami shouted at him, trying to pull away, but Luffy held firm, his expression serious as he guided her out of the room, a sense of urgency in his movements.
She had to see the shower tonight. It would make her so happy, and Luffy desperately craved to see her smile.
“You gotta see the stars!” he yelled over his shoulder, relieved when she stopped struggling. They made it to the railing outside, and Luffy curled an arm around her waist, pulling her against his side. Her hands gripped his shirt as he bungeed them to Sunny's head. Laughing, Luffy used his free arm to steady her as they found their footing.
When she caught her breath, Nami began hitting him gently with her fists. Luffy laughed, easily stopping her and turning her chin to the sky. Her anger melted away, and Luffy watched in delight as the stars found a home in her eyes, making her gasp in wonder.
Glancing at the sky, he smiled seeing they weren’t too late. “Robin said there’s a meteor shower tonight.” He sat, grabbing her wrist and gently urging her down next to him. Nami wobbled slightly as she slowly sat beside him. Luffy felt his skin tingle with how close she was, her hands gripping onto his shirt and cloak.
"I don't feel safe up here," she admitted, her words tinged with unease. "I feel like I could fall any second." The concern etched across her delicate features tugged at Luffy's heartstrings, and without hesitation, he wrapped a reassuring arm around her waist.
"That won't happen," he said firmly, his unwavering gaze meeting hers. "I'll always keep you safe, no matter what."
Nami let out a light, relieved laugh. "You're right, I'm sorry. I always feel safe when I'm with you."
Hearing her words made his heart swell with affection, and his smile widened. They sat in a comfortable silence for a moment, just gazing up at the sky, the soft murmurs from the group below nearly drowned out by Brook's violin and the crashing of the waves against the ship.
Nami exclaimed giddily, "Oh! Look!" as she pointed at a cluster of stars that shone brighter than the others. She then clapped her hands and held them close to her chest, whispering, "How beautiful." Leaning her head against Luffy, she added, "Thank you. I can't believe I forgot about the meteor shower tonight. I would've been so disappointed to miss it."
"I know," Luffy said simply. "You love stuff like this."
"The winter skies always have the prettiest stars.” She sighed. “No matter how cold, I always liked to go outside during this season to just sit and take it all in." She reminisced, "Bellemere would take Nojiko and I to the cliffside, and we'd eat tangerines and try to find certain constellations."
Luffy shrugged, trying to distract himself from the lump forming in his throat as he spoke softly, "Me, Ace and Sabo would lay out in the fields and watch the stars. We didn't know any of their names, but I've always thought they were super pretty. Ace told me once that people became stars after they died. I believed him for a while until Makino told me they were basically just big lit up gas balls." He chuckled.
“I think Ace was right.” Nami’s whispered was nearly drowned out by the gentle breeze.
Luffy peered down at Nami, their gazes meeting. Their noses nearly touched before Nami looked away, her reddening ears betraying her flustered state. She pulled back and began fidgeting with her hair, obscuring much of her face from Luffy's view. Frowning, he pulled her back in, wishing to see her face.
"I find it comforting to think of our loved ones up there among the stars," Nami murmured. "They have long been a means of navigation, before all the modern instruments. So the idea that a loved one is guiding you from above is just...sweet." She trailed off.
Luffy nodded slowly. "Yeah. He named one 'Rouge'. I'd hear him talk to it, calling it that, whenever he thought Sabo and I were asleep. Gramps told me later it was his mom's name." Luffy's expression grew somber. "Thinking about it now, it makes me sad. He hated his dad—I never understood that, I mean, how cool would it be to have the King of Pirates as your dad? But he never talked about his mom, and whenever someone mentioned her, he'd get quiet." Luffy pulled Nami closer, gripping the fabric of her shirt. "I should have asked him about her or something.”
“But…”Nami spoke softly, her voice urging Luffy to glance down at her. "That's not like you. The past has never mattered to you before. You never judge people based on where they came from, only on who they are now and where they want to go. Dwelling on the past has never been your style, and I think that's refreshing. It's what makes you so genuine." She rested her hand on top of his, and Luffy felt his grip instantly relax under her warmth. "I bet having a little brother like you, who's always dreaming about the future, had helped him more than talking about a past he was probably too young to fully understand. And you were so young too. You can’t beat yourself up for being a kid. You loved him and that’s all he needed.”
Luffy's heart raced as he stared down at Nami's face, his eyes darting between her eyes and her lips. He'd never been particularly interested in kissing before, but lately, he found himself thinking about it a lot, especially when he looked at Nami and in that moment, there was nothing he wanted more.
Suddenly, Chopper's excited shout from below broke the spell. "It's starting! Look at them!" Nami's eyes widened, and she looked back up at the sky, pulling Luffy's gaze away from her lips. He frowned briefly, but then smiled as he saw the stars begin to rain down in the sky.
As they watched the stars fall, her soft gasps and whispers sent a jolt of electricity through him and he fought an overwhelming urge to capture those delicate sounds with his own lips. He could practically feel the warmth of her breath, the gentle brush of her skin against his, and it took every ounce of his self-control not to give in to the temptation. When she trembled, he wasted no time in unwinding his arm from her side, quickly shrugging off his cloak to drape it over her quivering shoulders. The gesture drew her eyes to his, and Luffy couldn't help but grin at the sight of her flushed cheeks and shimmering gaze. "Cute," he murmured, a lopsided grin spreading across his face as he tugged her back against him, relishing in the way she seemed to melt into his embrace.
Luffy found himself wondering if his cloak would smell like her when he would put it back on, a thought that filled him with a strange sense of excitement. As the group below bid their goodnights, their footsteps crunching softly in the grass, Luffy glanced down to see Nami's eyes closed, her features relaxed in sleep, small snores slipping past her parted lips, her nose reddened from the chill in the air. Unwilling to disturb her peaceful slumber, Luffy simply held her close, tenderly placing his straw hat atop her head to shield her from the gentle breeze.
Nami was right, which came as no surprise. Dwelling on the past felt wrong—there was too much to look forward to. Luffy had accomplished his dream, and now things felt more complete, but that didn't mean he had to stop. Nami still had maps to draw, and that would take time and more adventures. Luffy wanted to be by her side forever, to share in all of it.
He yearned to watch more stars and cuddle close to her, to make her smile every day. Luffy placed a soft kiss on Nami's head, her hair tickling his nose as he breathed her in. For now, this would have to do. But he couldn’t wait for the day when he could finally kiss her on the lips.
Nami muttered a curse under her breath as she rubbed her face against Luffy's lap. Luffy halted his gentle ministrations to her scalp and slowly threaded his fingers through her long hair, resting his hand on her shoulder.
"Oh, crap," She exclaimed as she sat up suddenly. Luffy jumped at her movements. Nami's face was flushed bright red, her eyes wide, and a tiny bit of drool clung to the corner of her mouth. Luffy bit the inside of his cheek, struggling to suppress a laugh, knowing Nami would likely strike him if he dared to laugh at her appearance. "I fell asleep!" Nami blurted out.
"Yeah," Luffy nodded, smiling. "You fell asleep on my shoulder, but I thought that wouldn't be very comfortable, so I moved your head to my lap. I always enjoy when you scratch my head, so I wanted to do the same for you." He beamed proudly.
"I'm so sorry," Nami turned away and letting her hair fall in front of her face.
"Why?" He frowned, tilting his head. "I didn't mind at all. And you looked pretty cute sleeping."
Nami stood up abruptly, nearly stumbling as she did so. Luffy reached up and steadied her, pulling her close. "I, uh, need to get back to work on my maps!" Nami said hastily.
”What? This late?” He asked, confused, figuring she’d rather go to bed at this time.
"It's never too late!" she insisted, her hands pressing against Luffy's chest, creating a gap between them. "I just remembered I have to work on the mountain range sketch from the last island. I need to do it quickly before I forget."
Luffy furrowed his brow. "Didn't Robin help with your notes? And didn't Franky make that thing that could take pictures?"
"Please, I have to go do this right now!" Nami's lip quivered, her eyes watering as she stared up at him. Luffy felt his throat tighten at her distress.
"Okay. Okay." Luffy quickly swept them up to the deck, letting Nami go as their feet landed on the fake grass. Nami tugged at the cloak around her shoulders, but Luffy stopped her, securing it back in place. "It's cold tonight. Keep it if you're staying up," he told her gently.
"Okay..." she agreed softly. Luffy smiled wide, eyes closing in delight. The longer she wore the cloak, the better the odds were of it smelling like her. He was brilliant. But then his eyes snapped open when he felt something soft against his cheek. Before he could fully process what had happened, Nami had already darted away, her radiant smile flashing over her shoulder as she raced up the stairs. “Thank you, Luffy! Watching the stars with you made me really happy!" She called down to him. Luffy was left standing there, his mind reeling, a swirl of emotions playing across his face as he watched her disappear from view.
Luffy plopped to the ground, arms and legs sprawled out, the grass soft against his back. The warmth of his flushed face stood in stark contrast to the chilly night air that blew around him, causing a shiver to run down his spine. Yet despite the goosebumps prickling his skin, Luffy found his gaze irresistibly drawn upwards, drinking in the breathtaking sight of the countless stars twinkling overhead in the inky blackness of the sky. For a moment, he simply laid there in awed silence. After a bit, Luffy pouted, his stomach fluttering and heart thudding hard against his rib cage.
”That’s unfair Nami. I wasn’t prepared.” He muttered, feeling himself smile anyways, her kiss still tingling his cheek. “I’ll get you tomorrow. That’s a promise.” Luffy sighed, his eyes transfixing on the sky above as he thought over the night wistfully. “Hey Bellemere, I already promised that Pinwheel Guy, but I’ll tell you too. I’m gonna make her happy forever. So, you don’t have to worry. You can ask Ace. I keep my word.”
And maybe it was just a trick of the eyes, but Luffy swore two of the stars dazzled brighter for a second.
The next morning, Luffy noticed Sanji sniffling near the stove as he ate his breakfast. Zoro chuckled with his mouth full, and Usopp shook his head with a sigh.
"What's up with him?" Luffy asked through a mouthful of ham, his gaze fixed on the distressed cook. Zoro's laughter only grew louder in response, the swordsman clearly relishing in Sanji's misery.
Usopp turned to Luffy, chin in his hand, "Nami rejected him last night when he asked her to stargaze," he revealed, his tone tinged with a hint of pity.
Luffy grinned and stabbed a forkful of eggs and ham. "Oh yeah, that reminds me—I've gotta to kiss Nami back today!"
