Chapter 1: Just like that.

Chapter Text

ding!

you look over at the door and chuckle. “usual, mr redfield?” he leans against the bar and answers, “you know i prefer chris.” he looks at you and smiles a little, and you put in the order he always gets.

“i guess i just like your smile when i say it.” you didn’t look back at him as you were working on the drink, but you could hear his giggle.

his adorable smile. his beard fit him like a glove and you adored it. his thin, chapped lips. but you liked it. you grown to love every feature that touched his face.

you shake the drink, top it off with whipped cream and chocolate fudge, and hand the drink to him.

he gives you a nod and smile, handing you his card. you swipe it in the reader and hand it back.

and then there’s silence.

that’s how it goes every time.

you appreciate his company so much though, that you still feel safe, even when you can just sense his presence.

it never crossed your mind that he felt as strongly as you did, so you never thought to ever cary on a conversation.

the soft lofi beats playing from the speaker at the front of the store played, and he looked down at his book.

and just… reads.

that’s what he does every time.

you decide to break the awkward silence. “always stuffing your nose in that book, hm chris?” he looked up, almost a little surprised; at least that’s what it looked like.

he shoved the receipt you handed him along with his card on the page he was on, and slid the book away.
His grip on his drink tightened as he took a sip, right before saying “do you read?”

“yea!” but that was a complete lie. you’ve never read a book and enjoyed it a single day in your life, but it was his interest, and you… wanted to seem more ‘appealing’ to his eyes.

he chuckled. “it’s a classic romance novel, very poetic.” he said, lifting up the front cover of the book. “you, chris redfield? romance novel?” you inched a little closer to him, resting your elbows on the counter. “it’s a beautiful genre!” his face went a little red, and you laughed.

you went silent for a minute, staring into his brown, chocolatey eyes.

he broke eye contact, though, and fixed his glance back down at his book. honestly, you were a little disappointed. You lifted up your elbows and took out your phone, assuming the conversation was over already, but he spoke- “you, uh…”

you quickly looked up, but he looked red again and wasn’t maintaining eye contact like he was before.

you smirked, gesturing for him to carry on.

“are you uh, free this weekend?” your heart pounded at the question, and you found it hard to answer his question, because of how flustered and caught off guard you were by it. “i- yeah, i think so- why?”
he rubbed the back of his neck and looked back up at you,

“would you maybe, wanna get some food together? i uh, heard about this pretty killer noodle place a few blocks down from here-…”
you put your phone back in the pocket of your apron and rested back up against the counter. “a date?” you asked.

fuck.
why’d i say that.
you wanted to slap yourself for the stupid question, but surprisingly, he answered.

“if… that’s okay with you.”
“that’d be just perfect.”
“how bout you, uh, text me later?”
he holds out his phone, with the contacts app pulled up. you take it and dial in your name and number, and hand it back to him.

he looks back down at his phone before putting it in the pocket of his pants, and starts reading his book again.

holy SHITTT!
is this actually happening?
HE wants ME?

you go to the back of the shop to take a breath, and by the time you walk back out, he was gone.

just like that.
