Work Text:

Dear Steve,

Remember when we met? When we were fighting the Demodogs? I thought you were fake shit because Dustin kept going on and on about how great you were but I didn’t see it. I thought you were a little funny and had a lot of hair. But then you tried to use yourself as bait so we would make it out of the bus alive. That’s when I thought you were crazy, but I also started to see what Dustin was saying.
And when Billy showed up at Will’s and you tried so hard to defend us because you felt like he should fight someone his own size. I’m sorry he hurt you. You passed out and I didn’t know what else to do. I used that shot and he fell over. He still thought he was going to win. Your bat was against the wall. I felt so powerful swinging that at him. That nail bat is badass.
I think Robin could be really good for you. You know, if you ever get over Nancy.
Lucas told me about what you did at Starcourt, running that car into Billy so he wouldn’t hit them. You’re a really good guy… You’ve noticed me. Thank you for noticing me. I think you’re more of an older brother to me than Billy ever was. You learned to braid hair for me and gave me ice cream when it mattered. I love you. You’re the best big brother.
I want you to take care of yourself when I’m gone. I’d do it myself but… I’ve been relying on you all year. I know you don’t like to talk about things you’ve been through. I don’t either. I want you to be better so you don’t end up like me and let it consume you. Don’t let another monster take you just because you won’t tell people you’re not ok.
Anyways, take care of everyone while I’m gone, but find someone to take care of you too.

Love,
Max
