Late-Night Confessions

Summary:

Mark and Haechan have always been close, but a late-night conversation makes them realize that their feelings for each other run deeper than friendship.

Work Text:

The dorm was unusually quiet. It was one of those rare nights when all the members of NCT 127 were either out or asleep early. Mark had been lounging in the living room, scrolling through his phone, when Haechan plopped down beside him on the couch with his signature grin.

“Hyung,” Haechan said, poking Mark’s side, “You look like you’re deep in thought. What’s on your mind?”

Mark chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Just the usual, I guess. Thinking about lyrics, our schedules, life…”

Haechan nudged him with his elbow. “You’re always thinking too much. Relax for once, will you?”

Mark shot him a playful glare, but there was warmth in his eyes. “I could say the same to you. Always full of energy, always teasing everyone. Don’t you ever get tired?”

Haechan leaned back, resting his head on the back of the couch. “Only when I’m around you,” he said with a smirk. “You’re like the calm to my storm, hyung.”

Mark laughed, but it faded quickly as he noticed the sincerity in Haechan’s eyes. “You know, you’re really important to me,” Mark said quietly, almost as if he wasn’t sure if he should say it aloud.

Haechan turned his head to look at him. “Of course, we’re best friends, aren’t we?”

Mark hesitated. “Yeah… but sometimes it feels like it’s more than that, you know? Like, I can’t imagine going through all this without you by my side. You keep me grounded, even when you’re driving me crazy.”

Haechan’s playful demeanor softened, and he looked at Mark with a seriousness that was rare for him. “Hyung, you’re always saying things like that, making me feel all warm and fuzzy,” he teased, but his voice was gentler than usual.

Mark’s heart raced. He didn’t know why this felt different, why the words he was about to say felt so heavy, so important. “Haechan, I don’t think I’ve ever said this, but… you mean a lot to me. More than just as a friend.”

Haechan’s eyes widened slightly, and for a moment, the room was filled with nothing but the sound of their breathing. “Mark… what are you saying?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Mark took a deep breath, gathering his courage. “I’m saying that maybe… maybe what I feel for you isn’t just friendship. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately, and I’m scared, but I had to tell you.”

Haechan was silent, his mind racing. He had always been close to Mark, always felt an unspoken connection, but hearing these words made his heart skip a beat. “Hyung, I… I’ve thought about it too,” he admitted, his cheeks tinged with a hint of pink. “I didn’t want to ruin what we have, but I can’t help how I feel.”

Mark’s eyes met Haechan’s, and for the first time, they both saw the truth they had been avoiding for so long. Slowly, Mark reached out and took Haechan’s hand in his own. “So… where does this leave us?” Mark asked, his voice laced with nervous anticipation.

Haechan smiled, his usual mischievous grin returning, but this time it was softer, more tender. “I guess we’re still best friends,” he said, “but maybe… we can be something more, too.”

Mark’s heart swelled with relief and happiness. “Yeah,” he agreed, squeezing Haechan’s hand. “I’d like that.”

As they sat there, hands intertwined and hearts pounding in sync, they both knew that whatever came next, they would face it together. Their friendship had always been the foundation of their relationship, and now it was blossoming into something even deeper, something neither of them had fully expected but both of them wanted.

For now, that was enough. They had time to figure out the rest.
