The first snow of winter had fallen in the night. Snow was very exciting for little witches, you see. Naturally, the little witch that lived in the little cottage all alone in the very big woods sprung out of her bed that morning, smelling the change of seasons in the air. She donned her patterned headscarf and winter clothing and ran outside.
On a small stump rested a small kitten, almost as white as the snow that had fallen around her.
“Hello,” said the witch.
“Hello,” replied the kitten, “Do you have any food?”
“I suppose that depends on what kittens eat,” the little witch said, her nose twitching as she was thinking.
“I am rather fond of fish,” the kitten suggested. And at that, the little witch ran back into her little cottage and fetched a plate of fish from her stores.
“Will this do?” asked the little witch. The small kitten purred in response, gobbling up the dish faster than the little witch would have expected.
After the kitten's belly was full, she asked the witch, “It is very cold out. Do you have any blankets I could use?”
The little witch thought for a moment, pondering the small kitten’s question. “I don’t believe I do. But I can make a fire if that strikes your fancy.”
And so, the little witch closed her eyes and summoned fire to her fingertips, lighting the fire pit ablaze and warming them both. The small cat stretched her four legs out as she laid on the dirt directly in front of the warmth, and slept.
The little witch smiled, knowing she was helpful to the small kitten.
Days later, when the snow had piled up high, two new kitten’s appeared in the little witch’s yard. One was gray and had dark stripes on his back and a white belly. The other was black except for the very tip of his tail, and had mismatched eyes. They too asked for food and warmth, and the little witch was happy to provide. Soon enough, the little witch couldn’t look out her window without seeing a kitten eating the food she’d begun to put out or climbing on the toys she’d gotten.
And the little witch no longer lived alone in her little cottage in they very big woods. She lives with her new friends, some even sleeping on her bed. It was a good life for the little witch. She was happy, and so were her new friends.
