01. Moonstone

Work Text:

Moonstone was a very special shade of blue for Jeongguk; it reminded him of when they had first met. Though it had been too long to remember all the little details, Jeongguk remembers hot coffee, too-dry hair, and chapped lips. They had met in a coffee shop, Jimin accidentally tripping as he passed by and managing to get some of his freshly-ordered latte on both Jeongguk and his brother- it had all been a mess. He still remembers the headache afterward.

That wasn’t had made them Moonstone, though. No, instead it had been the days after when they slowly started hanging around each other when Jimin had noticed him on the college campus (“I didn’t think you’d be in college, you look so young, Jeonggukie.”). He had been reluctant to agree, however that day he found himself in the company of Jimin once again; he had sat down to him at lunch. Unfortunately, Jeongguk had gotten a scare out of it when Jimin was going for friendly, but Jimin wasn’t a quitter. The older kept having one-sided conversations while Jeongguk just sat quietly, pretending he couldn’t hear Jimin in hopes he would just go away. He never did.

They had just started connecting, of sorts. Either Jeongguk’s brother would drop him over at Jimin’s or Jimin would come over to study. Then, after that, they had started going to lunch. Hanging out in the park. Dinner. Dinner at each other’s houses. It had only been a couple of months before Jeongguk had caught himself leaning on the other far too much, how he was slowly getting attached.

It was happening during one of their visits to the park, where they both were laying on a blanket Jimin and sat out. He couldn’t remember what they had been talking about exactly, something about how one of them was a broke ass college student, but his thoughts kept drifting elsewhere. One minute, they were on how it was such a shitty, windy day and then: how it would feel if he banged his head back against the rock he could feel under the blanket (perhaps if he hit it hard enough, he could finally see something other than nothing). Then, it was how soft is his hand? and what is he even saying?

Maybe it was just the smell of his cologne that drew him closer.

Since the day at the park, Jeongguk has been making up excuses left in right just so he could answer his own curiosities. Were Jimin’s hands soft?Yes. He had found that one out after pouting over how Jimin was walking off without him in the parking lot. Jeongguk hadn’t expected for it to work, really, but before his brain could catch up he felt small fingers of his friends slip between his, palms bumping together gently as he was tugged along. His hair was soft, too, Jeongguk concluded the night Jimin stayed over, falling asleep on their sofa. Everything about him was so soft.

He hated soft.

What really drove the stake through Jeongguk’s chest one day was when Jimin was clinging to his arm (no matter how much the blind boy complained about it, he loved it when he paid attention to him like this). Suddenly, his laughter died and he stood still, Jimin taking notice immediately.

“Hey, can you promise me something?” Jeongguk asked quietly, his head hanging down to hide an obvious blush he felt on his cheeks. Jimin hummed, that damn hum the boy has learned to listen for and obsess over. “Let’s not fall in love, not yet.”

It really hadn’t been a secret to either of them; both of them had dropped obvious hints about their feelings that stretched further than close friendship. However, the younger wasn’t sure if he was ready for that.

“I mean, I just- “ He fumbled over his own words and started to panic when Jimin pulled away. “I’m scared. I’m afraid you’ll start pitying me, or that you’ll get sad when I can’t look at you the way you probably look at me.”

“Okay.”

“Please don’t take this as I don’t want you, because god, I do, I really like you but-“

“I said okay, Jeongguk.” Jimin’s grin widened as he laughed, ruffling Jeongguk’s hair out and watching him relax again. “We’ll wait until you’re ready.”

They took it slow after that, Jeongguk shyly holding Jimin’s hand once in a while. Neither of them brought up the idea of a relationship for a while, and he was scared that maybe Jimin had lost his feelings for him by the time he was brave enough to give it a try. Though, one drunken night later and Jeongguk quickly pushed aside those worries as soon as Jimin freaked about there being a bruise on his neck (the younger could barely hold back his smile, but he was shaking in laughter).

It was their three year anniversary when Jeongguk had brought it up, four years after they had met, one year after Jeongguk started learning about color. Jimin grinned, ran his fingers lazily through the others hair, and leaned his head back against the sofa.

“By the way, I failed at keeping that promise. I was already in love.”

“I hate you.”

More laughter. Jimin sipped at the wine they had opened up, passed it over to Jeongguk next to him. They sat in silence for a while, just enjoying the other’s company and the way they fit into each other’s sides perfectly. When they were running low on wine, Jimin yawned and stretched a little before settling down again and securing an arm around his lover.

“Are there any more shades that remind you of me?”
