"Is this about the green haired boy whose picture you keep in your wallet?"
"Wait, you snooped in my wallet?" Her eyes widen.
"Stop deflecting: the boy with the green hair."
She sighs and her mind instantly bring her back to him.
Of course it's about him, it has always been about him.
///
It was about him when she was barely 6 years old.
Some bullies had thrown away her toy cars. Luckly Rin was right there to teach them a lesson.
"So is you name really Rin?" She asked with sparkles in her eyes as the bullies run away crying. She looked at the scene with a big smile.
"Yes it is." He said sternly not even looking at her.
"You're so cool Rin!" The little kid exclaimed following behind Rin as he was walking away.
"I know."
"Wanna be friends?"
"I don't care."
She giggled and picked up her toy cars. She didn't care they were broken, because it wasn't about the toys anymore. It was about the little kid that came there to save her from those mean bullies.
No one ever did that for her. He was definitely the coolest kid ever.
///
It was about him when they both were 9 years old playing video games in his house.
Her parents at home were always screaming, she didn't know why. She knew that she got to spend time with Rin and that was all that mattered.
"You suck at this game." He said as another 'Game over' appeared on the television's screen.
She pouted, she got red in the face and she was most definitely about to cry.
"Are you really gonna cry about this?"
"It's not fair!" A small sob escaped her lips and tears started forming in her eyes.
"How is it not fair?" He asked and she mumbled something that didn't really make sense.
He huffed. He couldn't stand her. How was she such a crybaby?
But he didn't like to see her cry.
"Maybe it's the controller, let's switch." He said handing her his own.
She wiped her tears and started playing again.
"YAY! I won! You suck Rin!" She said with a grin on her face. The tears long gone.
He sighed, regretting to let her win.
She giggled as another match started.
She was so happy that she won! It was really the controller's fault then, Rin was right. He was definitely the collest kid ever.
///
It was about him when at 12 years old he missed one day of football practice to come to her birthday party. He didn't even like parties. But he was there with a present in his arms.
"Happy Birthday." He said handing her the box.
She was surprised to see him there, and even more to see him with a box. She quickly took it observing it with curious eyes. It was wrapped in red, her favourite color.
"You came Rin!" She said happily.
"Yes, training got canceled." He said. A complete lie.
She opened the wrapped package, revealing the LEGO set she had wanted for months. She jumped in excitment. Her eyes shining.
"THANK YOU RIN!" She said with a grin on her face.
He observed amused by her reaction.
"It's nothing." A complete lie. He forced his mother to visit five different stores to find it.
Then the two of them went back with the other kids, she dragged Rin around introducing him to all her friends like she was bragging about him.
He sighed, he was pissed, but he wasn't really.
She giggled, she couldn't have wished for a better birthday.
Well, the cake wasn't that great, but she was happy because the coolest kid ever was right next to her while she was eating it.
///
It was about him when she was 14 watching his football match from the first row.
She didn't even like football that much, but she liked Rin enough to compensate.
She was sitting in the stands, a small poster in her hands with the words: 'GO EMO BOY!' and the number of his jersey that she also had painted on her cheek.
After he scored a goal the crowd cheered and she started waving her poster waiting for his reaction.
He looked up at the stands, he read the poster. He sighed loudly shaking his head in her direction.
"What the hell is she doing with that?" He muttered under his breath pretending to be angry. One of his teammates patted his back.
"Oh Rin did you get a girl?"
"No. She's just an idiot." He said in an annoyed tone, but inside he thought the poster was pretty funny.
After scoring another goal he looked right in her direction, pointing at her with his serious expression. She waved the poster more.
"Did he just dedicated a goal to me?" She asked to herself chuckling.
She giggled deciding to make a even more embarrassing poster next time. She didn't think she would've had so much fun watching a boring football game. But Rin was just so perfect while playing, and his team couldn't lose with the coolest kid ever on their side.
///
It was very much about him when she was 15 years old playing video games in his room. Again.
It wasn't a day like the others, she was nervous and distracted pressing the buttons without paying attention. 'Game over' pops up on the screen.
"You suck at this game." He shook his head, she doesn't answer so he looks at her.
"Are you gonna cry like you used to when we were little?" No answer.
"Tch you here?" He waved a hand in front of her face.
"Rin?"
"What?" He kept looking at her observing her anxious expression.
"Do you want to come to the school dance with me?" She asked quietly.
Silence.
"Sure." He said nonchalantely, like it was just regular conversation. She wasn't expecting any of this, especially since she never saw Rin at these kind of events.
She was stunned, her eyes wide open in surprise, but he was acting so casually that she couldn't show that much of a reaction. She simply leaned her head against his shoulder.
He made a 'tch' sound, but did nothing to shake her off.
"I think it's the controller's fault I'm losing." She said with a huff, and Rin smirked handing her his own controller.
She giggled as she won the next match. She knew he made her win because in the end it was impossible for the coolest kid ever to lose like that.
///
It was about him when she was 15 years old, just a couple weeks after asking Rin the big question.
They were at the school dance, they were awkward.
She never went to a school dance with a boy, and he never came to a school dance at all.
But it wasn't that.
She never felt her heart beat that fast, and he was too mesmerized to even do one of his snarky comments.
"Do you want to dance Rin?" She asked quietly, not even daring to look at him.
Rin? dancing? He has never danced before and of course he wasn't going to do that for her...
"Yes. But don't complain if I step on your toes."
Or maybe he was.
Rin has always had the magical power of looking confident, even when he did things he had never done before: while she was shyly wrapping her arms around his neck, he firmly put his hands on her waist, like it was something normal.
She started talking about something, but his mind was elsewhere.
"Hey? Rin? Are you listening?"
He shook his head.
"No, I'm not."
She chuckled at the bluntness.
"Tch, if you didn't look this beautiful it would be easier to listen to you."
He said in a serious tone, but a small smirk was on his face.
She giggled, her cheeks flushed, he leaned closer...
And just like that their first kiss happened.
The moment froze and it was all about them: her and the coolest kid ever.
///
It was about him when she was 16 laying on the grass and looking at the stars.
Rin was right next to her, but he wasn't looking at the stars, he was looking at his star.
Her eyes, her lips, her cheeks, her nose... everything looked perfect to him.
"Oh Look Rin! That's Orion!" She said pointing at a group of stars. For him it was hard to see the constellations but he was happy to see his girlfriend excited about them.
Then she turned to look at him, everyhting about him was perfect, she took out her phone and snapped a picture of him. He narrowed his eyes at her.
"What are you doing dumbass?" He asked pretending to be annoyed, she chuckled.
"I took a picture of you because you look very pretty tonight." He smiled at her, amused by the compliment.
She leaned closer kissing him gently and after that she laid her head on his chest.
His fingers started playing with her hair, his other arm wrapping around her.
"Give me the phone." He said and she did so. Nothing to hide.
He took it and pointed the camera towards the two of them. She smiled. He snapped a photo.
"See? I'm sure this one is way better." He handed the phone back to her, and she laughed.
"I love you."
"I love you too." He answered planting a kiss on the top of her head.
"You know what? We should just stay together forever."
She said with a smile and he chuckled.
"Yes of course."
He said pulling her in another kiss, that started tender, but quickly turned more heated and passionate.
She giggled, her hands cupping his cheeks. His hands on her lower back keeping her close.
She couldn't get enough of him but there was no rush since they would be together forever.
The coolest kid ever, all hers, for eternity.
///
It was about him when she was 17.
They were in her house, she was standing in front of him, shocked.
"I need to focus on football, I don't want distractions." He said coldly, the words cutting her deeper than a knife. She felt like she was bleeding.
How could he call her a distraction after all the time they spent together?
She tried to not cry but her feelings quickly got the best of her, tears streaming down her cheeks.
He was cold, the coldest he has ever been with her. He wanted it to hurt, he wanted her to leave him and not even think about looking back. She deserved way better than a self-centered football player like him.
"W-what I-"
"This new football project invited me and I'm leaving."
A sob escaped her lips, she looked down feeling a surge of anguish. She tried to wipe her tears but they just didn't stop.
"W-we can s-still be together. Right?" She cried, her voice weak and vulnerable clinging to the last thread of hope.
"No. Stop it, you're being pathetic." He said with irritation in his voice.
Her heart just tearing apart even more. He couldn't stand seeing her like this, but he didn't have any other choice.
"B-but"
"NO! We're done!"
She fell on her knees, covering her face with her hands, her sobs now uncontrollable. She felt broken and alone like never before. Her world suddenly shattering, falling in pieces with no glue to keep it together.
She wanted to scream, to get mad at him, but she just couldn't.
He looked at her state, the sound of her crying was unsustainable. He felt cold and alone like never before. His world shutting down, the light gone and only darkness around him.
He wanted to hug her, wipe her tears, but he just couldn't.
She cried, he left. Was he really the coolest kid ever?
///
It was about him yesterday.
She was leaving her house and after three years she saw him walking down the road.
He saw her, he stopped in his track.
"Hi." He went closer to her.
"How are you doing?" She asked looking at him up and down, she saw his games in televion but he made a different impression in front of her.
He didn't answer. She sighed.
"You there?"
"Do you want to take a coffee with me?" He asked quietly.
Silence.
"Sure." She said acting nonchalantely, like it was just regular conversation. He wasn't expecting her to agree after how he treated her that day.
He was stunned, his eyes wide open in surprise, but she was acting so casually that he couldn't show that much of a reaction. He simply nodded.
"Things have been okay but..." He said as the two started walking together. "I'm sorry for how I ended things. I didn't mean anything I said that day."
She nodded, her younger self healing a bit with those words, a small smile appearing on her lips.
"You hurt me a lot, but we were just kids..." She muttered, her eyes falling on the guy she once considered the coolest kid ever.
He sighed, his younger self feeling a bit better with those words, but still not forgiving himself for hurting the coolest kid he had ever met. The only one who stayed by his side without questions.
///
It's about him now.
"So? What's the deal with you two?"
She takes out her wallet looking at the picture.
"He's my highschool boyfriend, the coolest kid I've ever met."
And maybe it will be about him tomorrow.
