At a corner table, Sonic the Hedgehog and Tangle the Lemur sat side by side, each with a plate of donuts in front of them. Sonic had gone for his usual—plain glazed with a side of chili dog-flavored donuts (a special he’d convinced the shop owner to create). Tangle, on the other hand, had opted for a variety pack, her plate piled high with different flavors, from strawberry-frosted to chocolate-covered.
“This place is awesome,” Tangle said, taking a big bite of a powdered donut. “I can’t believe I’ve never been here before!”
Sonic grinned, leaning back in his chair. “Told you, Tangle. Donut Delights is the best spot in town. I’ve been coming here for years.”
As they chatted and enjoyed their breakfast, the bell above the door jingled, signaling the arrival of new customers. Sonic glanced up and raised an eyebrow as Knuckles the Echidna and Amy Rose walked in together, deep in conversation.
“Well, look who it is,” Sonic said, nudging Tangle. “Didn’t expect to see those two here.”
Tangle followed Sonic’s gaze and waved excitedly at the newcomers. “Hey, Knuckles! Amy! Over here!”
Knuckles, who looked slightly uncomfortable in the bustling environment, gave a nod in their direction, while Amy smiled brightly and led the way to the table.
“Hey, guys!” Amy greeted as she and Knuckles joined them. “We didn’t expect to see you here either. What a nice surprise!”
Knuckles took a seat beside Amy, his usual stoic expression in place. “Amy wanted to stop by before we headed out to Angel Island. Something about trying the seasonal donuts.”
Amy playfully elbowed him. “You’re the one who said you were curious about the maple bacon flavor!”
Tangle laughed, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “You’ve got good taste, Knuckles. That one’s a classic.”
As they settled in, a waitress came by to take their orders. Amy ordered a couple of the seasonal donuts—a pumpkin spice and the aforementioned maple bacon—along with a cup of hot chocolate. Knuckles, after a moment of hesitation, asked for a plain donut and a coffee, black.
“So, what brings you two out here?” Sonic asked, taking a sip of his coffee. “Angel Island business?”
Knuckles nodded, though his gaze flicked to Amy briefly. “Yeah, just some routine stuff. Amy offered to help out.”
Amy grinned, her eyes lighting up. “And I thought we could make a day of it! You know, get some donuts, take care of the island, maybe have a little picnic. It’s been a while since we spent some time together.”
Tangle leaned forward, her curiosity piqued. “That sounds like a blast! Knuckles, are you sure you’re ready to handle all that excitement?”
Knuckles shrugged, his expression softening slightly. “I don’t mind. It’s good to have some company every now and then.”
Sonic exchanged a knowing look with Tangle, both of them catching the subtle shift in Knuckles’ demeanor. It was clear that he appreciated Amy’s company more than he let on.
As they continued to chat, the conversation turned to recent adventures and old stories, with each of them sharing their latest exploits. Sonic recounted his latest high-speed chase through Eggman’s latest fortress, while Tangle talked about a recent treasure hunt that had led her to a hidden temple deep in the jungle.
When it was Knuckles’ turn, he spoke about the ongoing duty of guarding the Master Emerald and the various threats that had come after it. Amy listened intently, occasionally chiming in with her own observations or asking questions that made Knuckles elaborate on details he otherwise might have skipped.
The donuts arrived, and as they dug in, the conversation took a lighter turn. Amy offered Knuckles a bite of her pumpkin spice donut, which he reluctantly accepted, only to be surprised by how much he enjoyed it. Tangle, ever the adventurer, challenged Sonic to a donut-eating contest, which he eagerly accepted, much to the amusement of Amy and Knuckles.
As the morning wore on, the four of them found themselves more relaxed and at ease, the warmth of the shop and the comfort of good food creating a cozy, laid-back atmosphere. Sonic and Tangle bantered playfully, their easygoing dynamic a stark contrast to the more subdued, yet equally affectionate, interaction between Knuckles and Amy.
At one point, while Sonic was distracted by trying to win the donut-eating contest, Tangle leaned over to Amy, her voice low but teasing. “You two seem to be getting along really well lately. Anything going on that we should know about?”
Amy blushed slightly, her gaze flicking to Knuckles, who was focused on his coffee. “We’re just spending more time together, that’s all. It’s nice… to have someone who understands, you know?”
Tangle smiled warmly, her tail curling around her as she nodded. “I get it. You guys make a good team.”
Before Amy could respond, Knuckles looked up, his eyes meeting Amy’s. There was a quiet understanding between them, a connection that didn’t need words.
Sonic, having finally finished the last donut, wiped his mouth with a satisfied grin. “Alright, I’m officially stuffed. But I’ll admit, Tangle, you almost had me there.”
Tangle laughed, raising her hands in mock surrender. “I’ll get you next time, Sonic. You just wait.”
Amy chuckled, finishing off her hot chocolate. “This was fun. We should do it more often.”
Knuckles nodded in agreement, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Yeah. I wouldn’t mind that.”
