Day 4: Thief and Enamoured

Summary:

The faint smell of smoke drifted into his nostrils. Maul’s eyes snapped open, as he jumped up to scan the skyline. No smoke over the city, but it had to be close. He turned to look out over the lake. A trail of black smoke rose from the grounds of Goldenglow Estate, the Guild had finally done it. Maven would be pleased, he owed someone a drink. He walked down the dock to get a better view, the sound of frantic shouting echoed in the distance. The plume of smoke grew darker.

Notes:

This is Day 4 of my entries for TES Summerfest 2024 on Tumblr! My other entries can be found in my personal collection.

Notes from Tumblr: Two for one baby! I had to get the couple I've published the most of my writing for in here somewhere. This prompt is so them. More Ren and Maul can be found on my ao3 and I will gladly gush about them. They're just so cute.

Work Text:

Rain, miserable rain. What else did he expect from the beautiful city of Riften? Maul pulled his hood farther down over his eyes. Maybe he should call it a day. Maven didn’t really need him out at the docks all day. He leaned back against the warehouse, and shut his eyes. Give it another hour. At least the rain on the Lake was relaxing.

Soaking wet Guild leathers stumbled out of the water around the corner of the warehouse in front of him. The small figure leaned against a nearby railing, taking in their distant handiwork. A delighted laugh danced through the air.

“Well look at you, Ren.” Maul leaned against the warehouse wall, as sparkling amber eyes turned to meet him. The pretty little Imperial gave him that same mischievous smirk she had when they met at the gate. “I was wondering if Bryn would ever find someone to get the job done.”

“I’m sure your boss will be happy.” As she tilted her head a dripping strand of chestnut hair dangled from beneath her hood.

“I’m not sure Maven even knows what that word means.”

Her hood covered her eyes as she laughed. Maul stood up a little straighter. A small crowd was gathering near the Fishery as more people noticed the smoke.

“Just make sure you tell her I did the job right,” she smiled up at him. “Three burnt hives, and an elf that will probably be paying her a visit soon.” She started walking towards him, “once he wakes up from his little nap .”

“Now you’re giving me more work to do?” He turned to follow her as she passed him, “I knew you were looking for trouble.”

“I thought that was part of the job?” She spun to look back at him as she walked, her amber eyes glittering under her hood. “Maybe I’ll buy you a drink sometime.”

“Yeah, see you around little thief.”

She spun back around, raced up the dock and into the city. Maul leaned back against the warehouse.
