Work Text:

Rain poured down from the sky, and occasionally thunder would crash in the distance. Wels watched the rain pour down in his room. He wasn't quite tall enough to look out the window, so he tried flapping his little wings as hard as he could to lift himself up to the window.

"C-c'mon- almost there-" Despite his best efforts, the little knight landed back on his feet. He huffed, crossing his arms. "I wish my wings were like Grian's..." He mumbled to himself. "Maybe they'd be a little bit easier to use then."

Wels turned around to face the rest of the room. Jevin and Hypno, whom he shared his room with, were asleep right now. He was going to ask if one of them could help lift him up onto the window ceil, but the two of them would probably start arguing if he woke them up.

He sighed, quietly opening his door and walking into the hallway. To his surprise, someone was standing at the window in the hallway. They were staring out of it, frowning.

"H-Hels..?" Wels questioned, approaching the demon. He turned around, looking down at Wels.

"Oh- hey there lil' guy. Did you need something?" He asked softly.

"N-no... but why do you look s-sad? Did something h-happen?" Hels shook his head, then pointed outside.

"I don't like the rain. I've always been afraid of it. A big storm like this is... ugh." Hels explained, bending down to Wels' level. "You don't seem so upset, though."

"N-no.. I really like the rain!" He said. "I think it's calming. "But why are you afraid of t-the rain?"

"Well... I'm a fire demon. If I touch the rain, or any water, it'll burn me. I have this flame inside of me.. it keeps me alive." He explained. "If the flame goes out, so do I."

Wels tilted his head. "Really..? Doesn't it hurt to have a flame inside of you?"

Hels chuckled. "No, little guy. Water might burn me, but fire doesn't. I could take a bath in lava, and come out just fine." He tapped his chest a few times. "Plus, the flame is like right there, over my heart. I think I'd be dead if it did hurt me.."

Wels stared for a few moments. "Oh, c'mon! You can't be scared! You aren't supposed to be afraid of anything! You're a knight!"

Hels shrugged. "Even the bravest knights of them all are scared of something." He said. "And that's ok." Wels raised an eyebrow at him. "Hm, you're telling me you're not afraid of anything?"

"Of course!" He nodded. "Nothing scares m-" The little knight got interrupted by the crashing of thunder. It made him jump a little, and he let out a small whimper.

"Wow, I thought you said you weren't afraid of anything?" Hels tilted his head and smiled. Wels huffed, turning away.

"T-the thunder doesn't scare me-" He insisted. "It's just... really loud... and it reminds of... scary things..." He frowned. Hels sighed.

“No one’s gonna be upset with you for being afraid of the thunder.” The demon said. “I bet even Xisuma jumps a little at it.”

“Oh… ya think so?” Wels asked hesitantly. Hels nodded, and pat his head.

“Of course Wels,” He said. “I think you’re just as brave as me.” Wels’ eyes widened a bit, and he smiled.

Hels chuckled. “You better get back to your room now. You know you’re supposed to be asleep with Jevin and Hypno right now.”

“I.. I couldn’t fall asleep. The thunder was too scary for me.” Wels admitted.

“Oh, that’s alright. But at least to back to your room.” Wels nodded and him.

“Okay Hels!” He said, running back to his room. He jumped a little again as thunder crashed in the distance, but it didn’t bother him as much anymore.
