Meet me on the Playground (Same Time Tomorrow?)

Summary:

“Hey, have you ever thought about... I don’t know, what’s after high school?” Jisung asked, trying to keep his voice steady. He was stalling, grappling with how to navigate this new, complicated emotion.

Seungmin propped himself up on one elbow, his eyes reflecting the deepening hues of the evening. “Sometimes,” he said softly. “But mostly, I’m just happy right now.”

Work Text:

The sun was sinking low over the horizon, casting long shadows on the playground as Jisung and Seungmin raced towards the giant slide, their laughter mingling with the chirps of crickets starting their evening song. The slide was a behemoth, a twisting metal serpent that had seen better days, but it was their fortress, their place of refuge from the mundane humdrum of high school life.

Jisung, with his wild hair and an ever-present grin, climbed up first, practically bouncing up the metal rungs. Seungmin followed, slower but more deliberate, always keeping a close eye on Jisung's antics. They were inseparable after school, their time together a cherished ritual that neither wanted to disrupt.

“Last one to the top is buying ice cream!” Jisung shouted, pausing to peek over his shoulder. The sunlight glinted off his eyes, and for a moment, Seungmin caught his gaze and felt a flutter in his chest. It was a familiar feeling but one he wasn’t quite ready to unpack yet.

When they reached the top, both sat side by side, their legs dangling over the edge of the slide. Seungmin’s heart was a steady drumbeat, each thud resonating with the thrill of shared secrets and the comfort of knowing someone so well. Jisung was already wriggling into position, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Ready?” Jisung asked, his voice brimming with playful challenge. Seungmin nodded, a soft smile forming on his lips. They both took a deep breath, and with a shared whoop, they launched themselves down the slide.

The descent was a blur of wind and laughter, the world spinning into a whirl of colors and sensations. As they landed at the bottom in a heap of tangled limbs and breathless giggles, Jisung looked at Seungmin with a newfound intensity. It was in that moment, lying on the grass with the twilight sky above them, that Jisung felt something shift—a recognition of feelings that had been bubbling beneath the surface.

The realization was both thrilling and terrifying. Every glance, every shared joke, every comfortable silence with Seungmin had become more than just friendship. It was something deeper, something that made Jisung’s heart race in a different way. He turned his head slightly, pretending to gaze at the sky, trying to keep his composure.

There was something in the way Seungmin spoke, a hint of understanding and shared sentiment, that made Jisung’s heart skip. He didn’t have the courage to voice his feelings yet, to lay bare what his heart had been hiding. But the way Seungmin looked at him, with that gentle, knowing smile, told him he wasn’t alone in this uncertainty.

The playground was growing dim, and the stars began to peek out, one by one. They lay there, side by side, each lost in their own thoughts but connected by an unspoken bond. The evening had been perfect, filled with laughter and the comfort of familiarity, but for Jisung, it was now also a promise of something more.

As they slowly stood up and brushed off the grass, their hands accidentally brushed against each other, lingering for just a heartbeat longer than necessary. Neither of them said a word, but the air between them seemed charged with a quiet understanding.

“Same time tomorrow?” Seungmin asked, his voice carrying a hint of hope.

“Definitely,” Jisung replied, his heart lighter with the knowledge that while they hadn’t yet said the words, they were on the brink of something beautiful.
