The Baby is a… 🕊️

Summary:

Teruteru goes to get an ultrasound appointment, where he will learn the gender of his beautiful unborn baby…

Set two weeks before Bun in the Oven 🍞

Notes:

After dealing with psychology studies and stress-induced canker sores, I present to you another fanfic for the Bumpamura series!

Yes, I’m aware that this fanfic takes place before the first fanfic (Bun in the Oven), but not only do I love non-linear storytelling, but this one popped into my head one night and I had to write it out 🥺

Anyway, I don’t have much else to say, so hopefully you all enjoy! 💕

“Mornin’, Mikan! Ah’m ready for today!”

Teruteru entered Jabberwock Island’s hospital, smiling as his eyes fell upon Mikan, who was sitting in the reception area and waiting patiently for him.

“And you’re j-just in time, too…!” Mikan smiled back. “I already g-got everything s-set up for your appointment…!” She then stood up. “F-Follow me…!”

Mikan began walking down the hallway, with the chef following closely behind her. While walking, Teruteru put his hand on his belly, which had swollen up over the past few months.

That swollen belly of his was housing a little miracle: his unborn baby, who he was not only going to see today, but also find out whether he was having a boy or a girl.

He was incredibly excited yet nervous for today; would his baby be a boy or a girl? Personally, he was hoping for a daughter.

Since the hospital was quite small, it only took a minute for the two to head to one of the examination rooms, which had been tidied up for today’s appointments.

“H-Here we are…!” Mikan said softly as she entered the room first, heading over to an ultrasound machine. “You c-can make yourself comfortable h-here while I get th-this started up…”

The chef saw Mikan gesturing to the examination bed next to the machine, which he took as his cue to get himself ready. He headed over to the bed, climbed onto it and laid back, waiting for the nurse to finish preparing everything.

“Okay, the m-machine is on,” Mikan said after a few seconds, turning to the chef. “But b-before I give you the u-ultrasound, I’m just going to ch-check you over first. D-Don’t mind me…!”

“Ah don’ mind,” Teruteru replied with a reassuring smile. “Do what ya gotta do!”

Mikan smiled a little, then gently lifted up the chef’s shirt and lowered his pants, getting a good look at his small baby bump.

“Oh…! How cute…!” the nurse giggled as she put her hands on Teruteru’s bump. “Your b-bump is at an ideal size for e-eighteen weeks…!” She glanced over at the chef. “And y-you said you started f-feeling the baby move yesterday, r-right…?”

“Mhm,” Teruteru nodded. “Started feelin’ da l’il bun move while makin’ dose brownies e’erywun liked,” He chuckled. “Ah think da l’il one wanted dose brownies just as much as y’all did…!”

“Hehe, not surprised…!” the nurse giggled. “Well, m-maybe you’ll feel and e-even see the baby move on th-the ultrasound…!” She picked up a bottle of blue gel from the table next to her. “Speaking of, I sh-should get you ready…!”

Mikan carefully squirted a tiny amount of gel onto the chef’s lower belly, causing the latter to slightly flinch.

“Ghhh~! C-cold…~!” Teruteru gasped a little, shuddering from the feeling of the gel on his belly.

“S-sorry, Teruteru,” Mikan said with a nervous smile. “But don’t worry, i-it won’t be bad o-once you get used to it…” She then put the bottle of gel down and picked up the ultrasound wand. “There we go, n-now let’s take a look…!”

The nurse then gently placed the wand on Teruteru’s belly and spread the gel around, her gaze fixed on the screen as she looked for the baby. The chef’s gaze was also fixed on the screen, excited to see his little baby.

“Ah! Here they are!” Mikan said as she briefly stopped moving the wand. “And they look so adorable! Look…!”

The moment the nurse said that, Teruteru caught sight of his unborn baby appearing on the screen, gasping at how much they had changed.

“O-Oh mah…” the chef spoke in barely a whisper. “The l’il bun is so precious…!” He could feel tears well up in his eyes. “They’ve gotten so big…!”

“That’s right!” Mikan replied, her nervous stutter having vanished upon seeing Teruteru’s unborn baby. “And they look perfect as well…! I’ll just take a look at everything and see how your baby is doing…”

The nurse continued to check on Teruteru’s baby, making comments on how the baby had been doing in his belly.

Mikan told the chef that the baby had been developing nicely; they had two tiny arms, two tiny legs and perfectly functioning systems. The baby even moved on the screen, which filled Teruteru’s heart with love.

Teruteru even asked to hear his baby’s heartbeat, which Mikan gladly allowed. The soft yet fast whooshing sounds of the baby’s tiny heartbeat brought a sense of relief and even more love towards the chef.

“Ah… dat sound never gets old…” Teruteru said softly as he shed more happy tears. “Da l’il bun’s heart beatin’…”

“That’s a strong and healthy heartbeat right there…!” Mikan said with a small smile, then glanced over at the chef. “And since the baby is in the right position for it, would you like to know whether they are a boy or a girl?”

Teruteru’s eyes lit up with anticipation after hearing the nurse’s question. “Yes!” he immediately replied. “Yes, ah’d love to!!”

The nurse nodded as she gently moved the wand again, while Teruteru watched the screen changing, showing different views of his baby.

“Oh, and I’ve been meaning to ask…” Mikan said, catching the chef’s attention. “Just out of curiosity, but are you hoping to have a boy or a girl?”

Although he was a little nervous, Teruteru still smiled. “…a girl,” he replied. “Definitely a girl!”

Mikan then gave the chef a warm smile. “Well, do I have some good news for you,” she said while gesturing to the screen. “I can tell that you are, in fact, having a baby girl!”

Teruteru gasped upon hearing Mikan’s words. Was it true? Was he really having the baby girl he dreamed of, the one he hoped and wished for?

“Wh-wha…? Y-Yer kiddin’, right…?” the chef breathed out, his eyes widening. “Ah… Ah’m really havin’ a baby girl…?”

“Of course you are!” Mikan giggled. “It was easy for me to find out, after all…!”

And Teruteru knew he could not deny his friend’s discovery; she WAS the Ultimate Nurse, after all.

If she was able to detect that the chef was having a baby girl, then there was no denying that he was, indeed, having a baby girl!

“O-Oh mah…” Teruteru breathed out, his eyes filling with even more tears of joy. “Ah’m havin’ a girl! A baby girl!!” He moved his hands to the top of his baby bump. “Ah’m so happy! Ah always wanted a girl… an’ now ah’m gettin’ one!!”

“You certainly are…!” Mikan said with a smile as she picked up some wipes and cleaned the gel off the ultrasound wand. “Oh, and I was able to capture some photos of your baby girl. Do you want me to print them out for you?”

The nurse had already started cleaning the gel off Teruteru’s belly when she asked that question - she sure was fast when it came to tidying everything up.

However, the chef was more focused on getting pictures of the baby growing inside his belly, his precious little daughter.

“Please do!” Teruteru told Mikan with much enthusiasm and fondness. “Ah want somethin’ ta’ remember dis moment forever!”

~💕~

The day had gone by quicker than anticipated, yet in a good way… especially for Teruteru.

After his appointment with Mikan, Teruteru had been quite busy.

He spent the rest of the day planning his gender reveal party, buying a few ingredients and foods from Rocketpunch Market, and cooking dinner for the other islanders.

Of course, he did not eat the food he cooked for the others; the sight, smell and even the mere thought of homemade ramen noodles made him feel nauseous. Instead, he decided to indulge in a lovely bowl of Italian spaghetti noodles and strawberry marshmallow fluff (much to the disgust of some of the other islanders).

It was now the end of the day, and Teruteru was in his cottage, looking at the photographs taken from his ultrasound appointment.

The chef cooed as he went through each photograph; he could hardly believe how much his baby had developed since his 13 week scan!

The baby had tiny little hands, tiny little feet, a tiny little face… and she was a girl!

Teruteru looked down at his little baby bump, placing a gentle hand on it. “Ah still can’t believe it…” he whispered. “Yer a girl… a baby girl…” He smiled. “Mah dreams are all comin’ true…!”

He was already picturing his future with a baby girl; princesses and dolls and frills and bows and dresses and the colour pink… all the little things associated with baby girls.

He could not wait to give birth to and raise his baby girl now, and even if she grew up to hate the colour pink and dresses, he would still love her unconditionally.

Teruteru looked back at the ultrasound pictures, knowing exactly what to do with them.

His gaze turned to a scrapbook on his bed, one that he bought the moment he found out he was pregnant. The scrapbook was titled “L’il Bun”, and it was coloured pink and blue and decorated with ribbons and baby stickers.

The chef smiled as he opened up the scrapbook until it fell onto a blank page, one that was ready to be decorated just like the page next to it.

Soon enough, Teruteru got to work; he stuck the ultrasound pictures onto the blank page and decorated them with some cute ribbon and flower stickers he had left over. After a few minutes of decoration, he picked up a pink glitter pen and wrote in the empty space: “18 weeks, you’re a girl!! 💕 ”.

Once he was done decorating, the chef took a moment to admire his work, as well as the page he decorated the week before. So much had changed in so little time, Teruteru could hardly believe it!

“Dere we go… mah l’il bun, mah l’il princess…” Teruteru whispered to himself as he carefully closed the scrapbook and looked down at his belly. “Yet anotha’ milestone reached…”

At that moment, the chef felt a fluttering sensation in his belly, which he knew was his baby girl moving around. He smiled as he moved his hands to his baby bump, cradling it.

“Hey, mah l’il bun… mah precious l’il girlie…!” Teruteru spoke softly as he rubbed his bump. “How are ya doin’ in dere? Ah’m so excited ta’ meet ya…!”

He felt the baby girl‘s flutters in his belly again, causing him to chuckle from the tickling feeling.

“Mhmhm~ Dat tickles!” the chef chuckled as he continued to rub his belly. “Ah have a feelin’ yer just as excited ta’ meet me!” He closed his eyes, his mind drifting to his hopes for the future. “Ah haven’t seen ya or even held ya yet… but ah love ya, and ah neva’ eva’ want ya ta’ forget dat…!”

Though he knew the baby girl could not yet understand words, he took the continuous flutters in his belly as an affirmation from her, a way of saying that she would never forget the love her “mother” has for her.

Teruteru spent the rest of the night sitting in bed, cradling his belly and talking to his baby girl, showering the unborn with all the love he could give.

He even sang to his baby girl, the soft lullabies lulling her into a peaceful sleep. Those lullabies Teruteru sang were calming and peaceful, and were nothing compared to Ibuki’s awfully loud and vulgar “I Squeezed Out the Baby” song, something that she could not stop singing since the chef and some of the others fell pregnant.

Overall, it was a wonderful day - and a peaceful night - for Teruteru, and he could not wait to see what was in store for him in the future. ❤️
