Chapter Text
“To little sis Diamond Mint:
I can’t believe you’ve already graduated! It really doesn’t feel like it’s been that long since you were starting school, asking me all sorts of questions about what class was like. It’s weird!”
Diamond Mint eagerly read through the letter from her sister. Despite their distance, Amethyst Star wrote to her sister quite a lot and Diamond replied whenever she could between her studies.
“Mom told me that you were planning on moving to Ponyville, or at least thinking about it. I don’t blame you! You’ll find better work here than in Canterlot, plus everyone here is so nice! Spring Melody and the others took me in so quickly when I first got here, it was almost unbelievable, if I’m honest.”
Vaguely, a few names came back to Diamond when thinking of ‘the others.’ Lyra Heartstrings, Twinkleshine, Carrot Top, and of course Spring Melody sounded familiar. She kept on.
“Now would be the best time to move. The Summer Sun Celebration is coming up here soon and almost everypony will be there! If you hurry, I’m sure you could whip up some candy to give out. I wouldn’t mind getting some!” Diamond Mint rolled her eyes.
“I know you’d enjoy it here. Write back and let me know when you plan to move!
-From your big sister, Amethyst Star.”
Packing was tedious. Between all the lost shirts now found, all the categories made for her items, and the seemingly endless number of boxes, Diamond Mint was exhausted.
She sat on the floor, her once full and organized room now a largely empty mess littered with half-full containers and separated piles of items to further sort through. Her bookshelves were emptied, her furniture had been hauled out, and her closet freed of its contents. There was still so much more to do.
A knock at the door drew her attention. “Diamond, dear?”
She opened the door from where she sat in the middle of the room, only barely able to open it with the boxes clogging up the area. A minty green unicorn stepped into the room. “Hey, Mom. Did you need anything?”
Her mother looked around the room, blinking in surprise. “I just wanted to see what all got done in here while I was out. How are you not exhausted?”
Diamond huffed. “Oh, I am.”
“Well, I guess old Minty Meadows is going to have to help you out here.” Diamond’s mother started, dragging a box close and filing books neatly in, stacked on top of one another with bookmarks just barely poking out of the top.
Diamond Mint smiled, rising to her hooves. “I could use the help for sure.”
Minty and Diamond worked throughout the afternoon, eventually getting everything sorted and boxes moved into the living room. As Diamond waited, she wrote.
“To my big sister Amethyst Star,
Mom’s been helping me pack for the afternoon. I’m going to be moving tomorrow and dad’s taking us out to eat tonight. I have everything prepared, I just need you to help me navigate the place for a little while.
I’ve always wanted to go back to the Summer Sun Celebration after mom and dad took us that first time! I can’t believe I’m moving just in time to attend! You’ll go with me, right?
Anyways, just let me know about everything!
-Your little sister, Diamond Mint.”
The evening had been spent going down restaurant row, eventually stopping at one that had caught the family’s eye before they made their way home.
“I can’t believe my daughter’s already out of school!” Her father kept on all night, crying about how “Both of my girls are leaving me!” and getting affectionate pushback from Minty. “Oh, Falling Star! You’re just as proud of our children as I am, and you know it.”
Star chuckled, dropping the dramatics. “Of course I am! You’re going to do big things, Diamond Mint!” He wrapped an arm around his daughter, starting up all over again. “I just can’t bear to see my little girl growing up on me!”
Diamond laughed hesitantly, a mix of emotions flurrying within her. She was excited to go live her life and meet new people, but she was leaving behind everything she knew. At least Amethyst will be with me…
“Oh, quit it! You’re making her feel bad!” Minty shooed Star off of her, the colt fake-sniffling in response with an amused hint in his eyes.
“Come on, you two.” Diamond ushered them along. “Let’s get inside before it gets too dark out.”
As Diamond trotted up the stairs to her room for what seemed like it would be the last time, at least for a while, she couldn’t brush off her nerves about it all. She was utterly excited, of course, but also had no idea what was in store for her.
Amethyst’s letter repeated itself in her head. Everyone here is so nice! It’s almost unbelievable…
She settled into the guest room’s bed, closing her eyes. Only time would tell how things would work out.
