Fair

Summary:

Why would one person be so deeply connected with the other?

Notes:

"Fair" by The Amazing Devil heavily inspired this, the song is simply perfect.
This was written with my tiefling bard Tav in mind, but I hove you'll like it anyway:)
English is not my first language and I've written this after 5 hours of air alarm so feel free to correct mistakes in the comments

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It's not fair. Just not fair how much Tav loves him.

Not fair that they regularly stop what they're doing just to look at him. Even when something goes wrong in the kitchen and he swears at the world oh-so-adorably.

Not fair that when they overhear a couple of his colleagues at some fancy event talking shit about him, Tav's really angry that their lyre's at home and they can't cast some spell on these assholes to ruin their day.

Not fair that they laugh at the corniest jokes ever if he's the one telling them. But Tav can't help but laugh, and the worst is that he knows how much they love these.

Not fair that when Tav wakes up and sees him deep in sleep, hair muffled, expression peaceful, their first thought of the day is "I'm home".

Not fair that after a quarrel their first instinct is to talk it out like normal people. Before him their defence mechanism in these was to shout, then be quiet for a long time. Because nobody ever listened to anything besides Tav's songs and tales. Actual opinions and emotions on something? "Oh, you're overreacting" was the common response. But now they know that somebody will listen. Somebody will try to understand.

It is not fair that Tav is so overwhelmingly in love with Gale.

It's not fair, why would one person be so deeply connected with the other?

---------

It's not fair. Just not fair how much Gale loves them.

Not fair that he can't help but be mesmerized by their music. Not only by the music itself, but the way they play. Like the lyre is a continuation of their body, like they were born to do it.

Not fair that he memorized all the ways in which their tail moves and what emotions it indicates.

Not fair that he stopped feeling guilty when talking too long, because there's always this look of genuine interest on their face when Gale does so.

Not fair that when he sees them asleep on the couch with a book beside them and Tara sleeping on their lap his first thought is "I'm home".

Not fair that now he feels he doesn't need to pretend. No need to pretend and to prove the worth. For them he's Gale, without all the titles and power.

It is not fair that Gale is so unashamedly in love with Tav.

It's not fair, why would one person be so deeply connected with the other?

---------

Maybe, just maybe...

It's because when Tav sees a flame, even after all these years they visibly flinch(they come back to their village, burned down to a crisp, for just a moment). Not visible for everyone, but he always sees. And in moments like this one he hugs them, whispering "I got you" and reminds that home is not gone anymore. It's here.

It's because when Gale wakes up from a nightmare(the one when he climbs the elder brain, when there's an explosion inside and around him, and where's he? Where's everyone? Where's Tav? He can't see them, he won't be able to ever again—) Tav looks him in the eyes, sometimes with tears in their own, smiles and reminds him that everything is alright, he's home. In the life that they've created.

It is because when they're together, they're not afraid anymore. Not ashamed. And they both feel like they waited for this their entire lives.
