Chapter Text
John was in seventh period, the last class of the day. He was surprised that the first day of sophomore year went by so fast, and he didn’t exactly like it…He didn’t want to go home yet. His home wasn’t *home*.
He let out a sigh through his nose as his body slumped into the seat, waiting on the teacher to start class always sucked, but it gave him time to look around. Even though it already said what classes he had on his schedule, he liked to look around and see how each teacher decorated their room according to the subject they taught. His seventh period just had to be science class…How was anybody supposed to focus on that shit when they’re already exhausted from the day? Oh well, at least the teacher was probably tired too, so they didn’t have to put in as much effort…Hopefully, God, he hoped the teacher would glance over it…John tended to just scribble stuff down and it looked like a mess.
Unfortunately, John’s daydreaming was interrupted when a faint scent of rose perfume wafted by him, almost surrounding him in a comforting warmth. He immediately sat up straight in response, obviously someone just sat in the desk next to him, and he didn’t want to look like a weirdo, slouched in his chair. He hesitantly looked over, blinking a few times at the blonde girl that sat to his right.
She was *very pretty* in John’s personal opinion, with how her frizzy curls rested on her shoulders, and he could’ve sworn his eyes lit up when they almost made eye contact. Her eyes were extremely bright green, almost like the brightest peridot he’d ever seen in his life; he almost looked away, but he couldn’t stop himself from staring.
He noticed that she was anxiously fidgeting with her fingers, rubbing her index finger over her thumbnail. She also tried to avoid his eyes by staring directly down at the desk. Oh. He was scaring her, right? He should stop…God, this is weird…He probably looked like a creep just staring at her like this.
John attempted to clear his throat and return his attention to the front of the class. He didn’t ignore the snickering behind him that happened after, although it didn’t sound like it was directed at that interaction, just at the girl. It made her shrink into her seat and John could see her eyebrows furrow ever-so-slightly in anxiety.
…
The brunette didn’t think that the class would ever end, but it eventually did. As most of his classmates were hurriedly scurrying to the exit, John took a moment to notice the girl taking a little longer than the others to pack up. Maybe she didn’t like home, too?
He slung his bag over his shoulder and carefully approached her, trying not to scare her again, even if it wasn’t him that made her all nervous.
“Hey, uh…Are you alright? You look a little…” John trailed off as he saw a frightened look in her eyes.
The girl frantically packed her bag and tried to move past John, but he blocked her. “I need to…To be out at the car line as s-soon as the bell rings- co-could you move?” Her voice seemed to tremble a bit, John didn’t like that. If her house was anything like his, she shouldn’t have to be that afraid to be late. It wasn’t right.
John put his left hand delicately on her shoulder, looking down at her with a small smile. “Hey, I was just asking if you were alright…There’s no need to be in a rush. My…My name’s John, by the way—“ He was interrupted by her shoving past him and leaving the classroom.
His hand was still in mid-air before he retracted it and subtly smelled it. It smelled like her. He sighed heavily in bliss momentarily before he went out of the building and went out to his car, driving off when the traffic stopped being as hectic.
Maybe he could try introducing himself at a different time, but he couldn’t stop thinking about that girl. Was she new? He’d never seen her before. Maybe he was just that oblivious to the people around him. Why were a few of his classmates giggling at her? He could’ve sworn that they were calling her “batty” in their whispered conversations. John didn’t think she was batty. She was beautiful, gorgeous even.
…Why was he even thinking that? He didn’t deserve those kinds of thoughts. He wasn’t even supposed to be here in the first place, according to his parents on *multiple* occasions. He didn’t deserve to fall in love with anybody, especially not people like her…She was too good for him, he knew it.
He couldn’t stop himself from muttering it. It just slipped out.
“…I don’t deserve to love. Not her. She probably wouldn’t like me anyway.”
