Under the Lamp Post

Summary:

Walking down the street at night is something he is used to. But will he able to leave it behind?

Work Text:

They both silently walk side by side in the cold night enjoying each other company. The sound of their shoes against the pavement. The sound of the cricket accompanied them in the night. Oliver can watch their breath become visible with how cold it is. Both his hands tucked inside the pocket of his jacket giving him a little warmth.

Jon who is beside him who wears nothing but a shirt and shorts. Always makes him marvel at how the other guys rarely catch a cold when going out with that outfit. Though he could see the other boy was slightly shivering.

God, how many years since they have been together now? They have been friends for so long.

He can still able to remember that day vividly. The first day of the kindergarten. Of how terrified he was being in such an unfamiliar environment with many unfamiliar faces. He was scared to approach someone. Not knowing how they will react to him when suddenly a boy appears in front of him grinning wildly at Oliver proudly announcing ‘Let’s be friends’. And since then they have been together. They are an item. People often joke about that. About how one can’t simply exist without the others.

But alas they are just ‘friend’. One he simply can live with. He was fine with that. As long as he has him by his side. But he knows that won’t happen simply because…

He will be leaving tomorrow.

To the other side of the world, pursuing his education at a prestigious university. Oliver was proud of that, happy and excited as well. Jon too had been happy for him. They both celebrated together at the announcement, jumping and shouting happily in Jon’s room. Jon too, got into a top university. But it was in the country just hours of drive away from here. Not the same with Oliver who needs to travel by plane.

They didn’t talk about it. Never once mentioned that they will leave each other after so many years together side by side.

They spent the days and months of the time they had with each other. Enjoying and remembering every single thing about one another. Taking in everything they can to not forget about the others. Oliver always tried to shove the thought away every time they were together. The thought about how they won't see each other again.

Oliver sighed deeply and started to take off his jacket. Luckily wearing another pair of layers of clothes beneath it. Jon glanced at Oliver wondering what he was doing before a jacket shoved against him. “Wear it” he mutters.

Jon just blinked at him “You know that I’m fine-“

“Wear it” he said leaving no room to argue.

Jon just slowly nodded at him and took the jacket from his hand.

“Alright” he said while wearing the jacket Oliver had just given to him. And they went back to silence once more as they continued to walk.

He hated it. Hated the thought of having to part away from Jon. Hate that he only be able to see him during holidays.

Hate that… that one day they can just stop talking to each other.

He immediately shakes the thought away hoping to bury it deep inside him and to not surface back. Beside him, Jon noticed his expression and snorted “What’s up with you?” He said lightheartedly acting like everything is fine.

Acting like Oliver won’t leave tomorrow and doesn’t know if they will see each other again. Oliver knows deep down that Jon is just putting a brave face in front of him to not sadden him more. He always loved that part of him. He was the sun to his moon. The one who can brighten his days more than the morning sun. Oliver stopped his walking, right below the lamp street shining above him. His eyes were on the pavement below him. Jon stopped when he noticed Oliver had stopped walking.

“Hey…” he announces softly. Slowly stands in front of him and takes both of Oliver’s hands into his own. The warmth of his hands calmed him and gave him assurance that Jon was still there. Still by his side. And yet...

He sighs shakily and closes his eyes as he grips Jon’s hands tighter. “I don’t want to leave…” he whispered in the night. Not want to open his eyes, afraid of the reaction from the other boy.

But instead, Jon only stepped closer. He could feel his hot breath against him, and Jon’s hands moved up to cupped his cheek.

“I also don’t want you to leave,” Jon said softly against him. His thumb rubbed against his cheek. Wiping away the tears that is trailing down from his face. Oliver leans towards his hand and Jon starts to chuckle at the sight. He always loved the sound of the other boy's laugh. He loves everything about him and it makes his head dizzy.

He felt his eyes start well up, his throat tightened, and his lips wobbled. Jon took notice of this immediately and quickly hugged Oliver. Both Jon’s hands wrapped around him holding him close. Oliver buried his face against Jon’s shoulder as tears started flowing from his eyes. He hears Jon continue to soothe him, calming him down, whispering to him all sorts of comforting words in his ears. Oliver grips the back of his jacket that now Jon wears. Gripping him tight like something he doesn’t want to let go.

“Everything is going to be alright Ollie” Jon whispered, his hand rubbing Oliver’s back. His own voice starts to waver.

“I hate that you have to leave, but I want the best for you Ollie” he continued to whisper “I want you to catch your dream, to reach the top, even if that means you have to be away on the other side of the world” Jon can hear his voice start to crack up as tears start falling.

“Just remember that. No matter where you go, no matter where I am-” He sucked in a breath “-That I’m always by your side”.

They both hug, seemingly like an eternity. Not wanting to let go of the others. It took some time before they both calmed down. Jon reluctantly pulled away and kept Oliver by arm's length. Smiling gently towards Oliver and Oliver watches him. Took in closer to Jon’s face. Remembering every single detail about him.

Before he closed his distance and kissed him on the cheeks. He can feel the other boy tense up before quickly letting out a laugh at the gesture.

Oliver pulled back. “I love you” he starts with those three words. Something they are used to say to each other. But this one, it feels different.

“I love you, Jon. Every day I wake up, I’m always afraid that I will live the same boring life again and again.

But you-“ he grips Jon’s hand tighter “-you are what makes my life interesting” he sighs shakily “Every day I wake up with the knowledge that you will be waiting for me as we venture out for the day.” He smiled at Jon “You make my life much more brighter Jon”.

He watches Jon’s face. Seeing Jon’s grinning face plastered on his face. Like he just won the lottery. And Oliver grinned alongside him.

“It’s getting late” Jon mentioned “It’s getting late” Oliver repeats more softer. He doesn’t want this to end yet but he knows they have to go.

Tomorrow is a big day for him and he can’t be late. He gave Jon another hug holding closer than ever and Jon returned the hug.

After a while he reluctantly pulled back “Keep the jacket” he said to him “You look good in it”. “I always look good in anything,” he said teasingly and Oliver playfully shoved him and rolled his eyes at him.

Even in this moment Jon still manages to find a way to lighten the mood. “…Goodbye” he whispered but Jon still heard him. “I’ll see you” was his response and Jon turned but Oliver quickly grabbed his hand to stop him.

“Wait for me,” he said like he was desperate. “I will” Jon gives him an assuring smile and Oliver releases the grip as he watches Jon walk away.

His eyes stayed on Jon as he walked. Before he turns around and walks away
