Work Text:

In the grand ballroom of Malfoy Manor, the air was thick with fear, punctuated by the echoing screams of a girl whom Lucius Malfoy loathed with every fiber of his being. Hermione Granger lay bound before him, her hair splayed out in a tangle of knots across the polished mahogany of his floor, —a stark, fraying thread woven into the illicit tapestry of his family’s legacy. The crystal chandeliers sparkled above like the glint of daggers, illuminating the scene of turmoil that unfolded below.

Lucius retreated into the shadows, cloaking himself in darkness. There he stood, a mere whisper of a man utterly powerless against the forces with whom he'd chosen to surround himself. His heartbeat matched the relentless cadence of the girl’s agony, each shriek driving a dagger deeper into his chest. He wanted to close his ears to her pitiful cries, but he was chained by the fear that gripped his heart. He had made too many mistakes. Draco's life was on the line yet he refused to identify the prisoners.

He watched the boy, his mirror image, standing transfixed in horror as Bellatrix cackled with wicked delight, wielding the Cruciatus Curse like an artist with a brush—each stroke adding layers to Hermione’s surging pain.

Fury twisted in Lucius’s chest as he watched Draco’s eyes dart between the horror unfolding in front of him and the dark madness that was his aunt. How could his son be feeling sympathy toward this muggle-born scum? The thought stirred an unholy rage within him—a desire to extinguish the young witch’s existence altogether, to erase her from the world, not only for her bloodline but as a threat to his family’s legacy.

As his mind raced with indignation, Lucius set forth the creeping tendrils of legilimency, reaching into Draco's thoughts, like snakes slithering through the grass, hunting for secrets to be dredged up and exposed. He could feel Draco’s emotions—a tumultuous mix of fear, helplessness, and something darker, deeper lurking at its core: love. Lucius shuddered, disgust curling his lip as he interrogated his own son’s heart.

Draco, you fool, how can you possibly love her? Lucious seethed, gripping the marble balustrade as if it were a lifeline. How can you not see? She is filth—a dangerous creature with stolen magic meant for nothing but to be crushed under the weight of our bloodline.

But Draco’s thoughts remained stubbornly unshakeable, echoing with an intense urgency that seemed to override all reason. Digging deeper, Lucius discovered the secret plan brewing in his son’s mind; it set every nerve in him on high alert.

“I must save her,” Draco had come to conclude, and in that moment, a burning fury subsumed Lucius. Here they were, entangled in this brutal dance dictated by the Dark Lord, yet Draco dared to imagine himself a hero, reckless enough to believe he could save Potter's favourite mudblood of all things.

“No!” Lucius hissed inwardly, recoiling from the significance of his son’s intentions. They were trapped in a web already spun and any deviation from the path would be met with dire consequences. He must protect his family by obliterating that infatuation once and for all.

With swift precision, Lucius tapped into his own magical prowess, pooling his willpower into the dark arts as he slowly and deliberately conjured the memory erasure spell. Even then, his heart wavered—a last flicker of trepidation, the echo of his familial bond. But the fear of failure, the terror that Voldemort might unearth their deepest secrets, charred through him like fire.

Just as Draco forged forward, emotions blaring like alarms to save her, Lucius swept into his mind, ready to blot out the very memory of Hermione Granger. He could almost grasp the repetition of her name in Draco’s mental chant, encapsulated in longing and foolishness. In that instant, Lucius became the architect of his son's oblivion—a blacksmith forging shackles to bind his heart.

Hermione twisted on the flagstone floor, beads of sweat mingling with tears—her panic struck harder than any physical torment Bellatrix could inflict. “Draco! Please!” she cried out, her voice breaking as her energy ebbed away.

Lucius tightened his grip, invoking the spell with shaky resolve. “Obliviate!” he whispered under his breath, and as the incantation filled the air, he felt the severing of the bond, a violent intrusion in Draco’s thoughts that would erase every thread connecting him to the girl.

Draco faltered, a bewildered expression crossing his face, his desire mingling into confusion, loss, and despair. Lucius watched as the light flickered in his son’s eyes—the foolish hope of rebellion quashed, leaving a hollow shell of a boy who yearned for connection. He could not allow this trivial affection to muddle the purity of the Malfoy name.

“Suffering breeds strength, Draco,” Lucius murmured, stepping back into the shadows, allowing Bellatrix’s cruel laughter to wash over the ballroom like a tide, drowning out his own shame.

Moments passed, long and dragging, each heartbeat an eternity as he felt the boy’s spirit dim against the weight of his new reality. The sounds of pain encased the room, and Lucius felt his hands tremble—the price paid for the preservation of an empire.

Could Draco recover? He would have to lead the life laid out for him. Yes, Lucius’s mind soured, but one thought remained tangibly painful—would this darkness swallow Draco whole? As he retreated further from the agony unfolding, Lucius Malfoy forced himself to believe that safety lay in denying love, even if within that denial lingered the ghosts of youth and hope, forever lost in the tormented halls of a decaying manor.
