Heck yeah, Haibara’s favorite day of the year!!
Well, after Valentine's Day, White Day, Halloween, Christmas, and of course his anniversary…
Ok, it was one of his favorite days of the year
And why, you might ask?? Cause it was his birthday of course!! He was turning 28 today, the last of their friends to turn that age, making him the youngest. But he didn’t care. He just liked an excuse to celebrate and eat good food with the people he cared about. Like what they were planning on doing that night: going to his favorite restaurant. He just had to finish the school day, and then they’d be on their way
Haibara’s excitement began as soon as he woke up, though he was a bit miffed to find that he was alone in the bed he shared with his partner and old classmate- Nanami Kento
It didn’t bother him too much- he knew the blonde often had early days. But still… of all the days…
Oh well, at least he knew the others would be there since they were all going to the same place at the same time
Yu got ready for the day with his usual bright smile and entered the kitchen with an extra pep in his step. But again… someone was missing- this time Gojo Satoru
No big deal, he was the strongest after all. He was always getting pulled in different directions. At least Getou Suguru was there
“Good morning~” Haibara called in a sing-song voice to the man standing at the coffee maker. He could hear Getou’s warm chuckle as he turned to look over his shoulder, giving the brunette a soft smile
“Good morning” he greeted “Satoru had to go in early for something, so we don’t have to wait for him”
“Ah ok, I was wondering where he was. Where’s Nanamin??” Yu responded. Getou answered with a hum as he poured coffee into two thermoses “There was an issue with some of the paperwork from yesterday’s mission apparently”
“Damn, that sucks” Haibara replied, knowing how stressed Nanami could get over incorrectly filed paperwork. It was just a side effect of his salaryman days. “Anything else of note??” Yu asked as Getou grabbed the two thermoses “I’ve got a mission in the afternoon that hopefully won’t go too far into the evening” he replied, giving the brunette one of the two thermoses with a kiss on the cheek
“I’m sure you’ll get it done with no issues” Haibara said, giving the older sorcerer a bright smile and thank you. “Oh, and speaking of Nanami, he left some pastries in the microwave for you to heat up” Getou added “Should be a couple of those ham and cheese croissants”
“Ah, hell yeah!!” Yu cheered. Of course Kento would make sure to leave behind one of his favorite breakfast items despite having to go in early. He was so excited by the food that he didn’t notice Getou pulling out his phone and shooting a text
Leaving the apartment soon. Be on campus in about 20 minutes
Haibara, Getou, and Gojo all worked at Tokyo Jujutsu Tech as teachers. Gojo was the first-year teacher, Getou the fourth, and Haibara was the general combat teacher who worked with all grades. Haibara loved getting to work with all of the students, and especially getting to work with them for the entire duration of their time at the school
The school day went on like normal, except for the fact that Yu ended up alone during each break. In between classes and lunch, every time he tried finding either Getou or Gojo, they were both gone. Not even Nanami was able to make it to the campus that day
At least each time he went into his office, there’d be a nice treat waiting for him, but he ended up just boxing them up. It felt wrong to enjoy it without anyone else. To make matters worse, one by one, each sorcerer sent their own text message that made his stomach drop
Mission running long, don’t think I can make it to dinner on time
Last minute mission, stupid higher-ups. See you later tonight :)
Apologies Yu, the paperwork fiasco this morning has messed everything up. I doubt I will get out of here in a timely manner. You and the others don’t need to wait for me.
Haibara knew that living a life of sorcery meant spontaneity, but of all the days, why today?? And why all three of them??
Was Yu really going to spend his birthday alone??
“Please tell me I’m crazy Shoko, but I can’t help but feel really disappointed… I know I have to be overreacting, but still…”
“It’s totally alright to feel that way Yu. It’s your birthday after all. I get it”
Now that he didn’t have anyone to meet that evening, Haibara decided to stop by the infirmary to speak with Shoko. It’s not like he’d be missing anything
“I know” he sighed “I just hate being an inconvenience… I don’t want everyone to feel bad when they have important things to do”
“Maybe you can find a day that works for all of you to celebrate instead??” the healer suggested “It’s not ideal, but better than nothing, I suppose”
“Yeah, you’re right” Haibara sighed again “I’ll mention it once they all get back later tonight. At least there’s no school tomorrow. Thanks Shoko” he said, doing his best to give a soft smile to hide his disappointment
“No worries. If you want, Ijichi and I can drive you back to your apartment. Give you at least a little company” Shoko offered and Yu’s smile turned a bit more genuine “I’d really appreciate it. If it’s not interrupting anything, of course”
“It’s not an issue” she replied, waving her hand dismissively “Let me just shoot him a text, he should be bringing a group of students back from a mission right about now” The healer got out her phone while Haibara mentioned he was going to grab his things from his office. Once the brunette was gone, Shoko opened her phone and sent out a text
We’re to leave campus with Haibara once Ijichi gets back with the car. Probably about 20-25 mins
“You guys really don’t have to come in. I’m sure you have better things you could be doing”
“It’s all good, no need to worry”
“Yes, at least allow us to walk you to your apartment”
Ijichi had parked the car and Haibara was about to head up, though he paused when he noticed the other two getting out of the car as well. “Well I guess if you insist” Haibara shrugged as he led the way to the front door of the apartment he shared with the other 3 men
When he got to the door, he thought he heard movement coming from inside, but he pushed that aside as he fished his keys from his pocket. Yu pushed the door open with a soft sigh, stepping in to flick on the lights while toeing off his shoes. Just as he was looking up, several voices called out to startle him
“Happy Birthday!!”
Haibara’s eyes widened in shock as his head snapped up. Standing in the living room of his apartment, were all of his closest friends and partners. Nanami, Getou, Gojo, Mei, Utahime… they were all there, and Shoko and Ijichi came up behind him to be there as well
“What… everyone?? What are you all doing here?!”
“Celebrating your birthday, of course” Gojo smiled “What else would we be doing??”
“But… I thought you all were busy tonight” Haibara said, stunned to stillness and allowing Shoko to usher him further into his apartment
“Apologies for the lies” Getou chuckled “You have no clue how hard it was not to crack”
“You guys…” Haibara said, eyes tearing up slightly from joy “I’m so happy right now”
“Then I call this a success” Gojo laughed “Now come on, there’s plenty of food, and it’s time to celebrate!!”
“Wow… I had such an amazing evening. I can’t thank you guys enough, though I do think I ate too much. I’m surprised there’s still leftovers”
Haibara was standing on the balcony of the room he shared with Nanami, with said blonde standing behind him with his arms around the brunette’s waist. The night had been full of good food and drinks in the company of friends and people Yu cared about, and was ending in the arms of the person he cared about the most
“I’m very glad you enjoyed it” Nanami replied “I was a bit worried when Satoru first posited the idea. I didn’t like the idea of making you upset”
“I would’ve understood anyway” Haibara said “People get busy. It’s natural. I’m just glad things worked out in the end”
“Still, I want to make up for not spending the day with you. And I know the others do too” Nanami added, pressing a soft kiss to the brunette’s temple “I missed you”
“Aw~ you’re too sweet” Yu giggled, nuzzling back against the man behind him “I wouldn’t mind that at all, by the way” He turned around in the blonde’s embrace, wrapping his arms loosely around his neck to smile at him. Nanami resettled his hands on Yu’s waist, thumbs rubbing circles into his sides and causing the brunette to hum with contentment “I do suppose the night is still young~”
