Clear surface, murky depth

Summary:

Gai believes, after more than a decade of knowing Kakashi, that he knew his rival inside and out.

An accident shows him that no, he doesn't know his rival very well.

Notes:

English is not my native language, I used Google Translate and my decent knowledge of English to make my shit understandable.

Look, if you want to see a somewhat aro Gai trying to understand why Kakashi seems to like him for several chapters 'cause you like that bastard to suffer a little, this is your fic. Share with me the experience of a really slow realization.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: First fact about Kakashi: He gets weird when he gets drunk.

Chapter Text

His body hit the wood of the door, the handle hurt his hip where it was pressed, and Gai had nothing to do.

Kakashi rests one hand on top of his shoulder, on the door, and his other arm grabs Gai's suit. The room was dark, so he couldn't see his rival's expression, but he knew that the other man was watching him carefully.

He is confused. Pushing or grabbing him will not help.

In a conciliatory gesture, he raised both hands in the small space between his chest and his friend's. "Kakashi, it's me! Your eternal rival, Gai. Calm down!"

His grip on the green spandex softened somewhat, but he didn't let go. Kakashi's face moved closer, to the point where his drunken breath collided squarely with Gai's lips.

"I feel dizzy. C-Can't see you clearly."

Gai laughed, relaxing a little. "You drank too much, rival. That's what happened."

"What did I drink?"

"Sake. Don't worry, after a rejuvenating nap, you'll be back to your senses." Gai looked patiently at Kakashi, waiting for him to process his words and let go, but instead, the hand that was against the door slammed into the side of Gai's jaw, making him jump.

"What-?" Gai tried to move, but his rival's hand grabbed his chin harshly, tilting it down a little.

"How ridiculous you look." Kakashi said, amused, moving Gai's chin, and therefore his head, from side to side, before stopping, and finally releasing the grip he had on Gai's suit to pull down his mask. "How do you see me?"

Admittedly, this was the strangest situation he'd ever found himself in with Kakashi, considering they once ended up naked on top of each other (a dare that went very wrong and certainly wouldn't happen ever again), but it was excusable; his poor rival had too many drinks. It was normal for hot-blooded young men like the two of them of surpass limits.

"I couldn't tell you now, my dear rival!" He wondered if Kakashi was suffering from a sudden physical insecurity, which really seems inconsistent with his usual modern and cool attitude, but Gai thought that even the best of them happen to it from time to time, like it did to Gai in his childhood. "But overall, I think you're handsome, a total ladykiller! You even have a long list of beautiful admirers all over Fire Country. It even makes me a little jealous!"

Kakashi snorted in amusement in his face. "You have nothing to be jealous of." Gai can't help but get nervous at the alarming proximity between their faces. The hand holding Gai's chin moved to the juncture between his neck and shoulder, thumb caressing Gai's leaping pulse. His other hand, which had earlier held down his mask, came to rest just below Gai's last rib. "I'll show you why you don't have to be."

Gai hasn't been able to be with Kakashi much in the last six years, although he will always try to get as close to him as possible. ANBU slowly and deeply absorbed his friend in different ways, but as of late, his friend had been more… stable, you could say. Wouldn't say he softened, but he seemed generally kinder, although his tormented look was intact.

When he invited Kakashi to drink as a reward for winning their usual fighting challenge (with the addition of using kunai and the reason why he almost lost an eye if it weren't for his rival's phenomenal reflexes), he didn't think it would end like this, him against Kakashi's door.

With Kakashi kissing him.

Kissing him with tongue.

Said man let out a noise, like a deep snort, pulling away for a moment to look into the eyes of a suddenly dumbfounded Gai before giggling and diving back into Gai's mouth.

Kakashi's mouth was hot, his lips pressed hard, and the flavor carried by his slippery tongue registered in Gai's mouth, the alcohol predominating but with a salty and bitter touch on the tip that ran over Gai's molars. It gave him something like tickles.

But Gai woke up from the mental paralysis he had suffered when the hand that was under his ribs circled his hip and pressed him against Kakashi's, where his not-really-little friend greeted him with harsh enthusiasm. With pure haste, his hands shot out to Kakashi's chest, moving him away, but not enough to free Gai completely.

"K-K-Kakashi! I'm Gai! I'm Gai!" He shouted urgently, waiting for Kakashi to realize that it wasn't who he thought he was kissing.

(Why would Kakashi kiss a man in the first place??)

Of all the reactions he expected from his friend, from sudden realization and subsequent disgust to kneeling to apologize, he didn't expect him to giggle and say, "I know." Before attaching himself to Gai again, but this time directing his mouth to his neck, giving him a deep bite. Gai tried not to feel guilty when the force he used to completely push him away sent his friend crashing against the wall. After all, he sure didn't know what he was doing. The alcohol messed with his head, clearly.

"I know."

Gai pressed a hand against his lips, his jaw clenched like a vise. He saw Kakashi's body slide to the floor, clearly fainted, and moved to pick him up and leave him on the blanket of his bed, not daring to take off his shoes before turning around, carrying a glass of water and leaving him behind. full sight along with a hangover pill, and leave Kakashi's apartment. He gently closed Kakashi's door, and locked it with the copy that Kakashi had given him a few years ago so that he would stop sneaking through his windows.

"You're going to break my window frames if you keep this up." He had said angrily, after throwing the key in Gai's face when he was taking a break. "I hope that deters you from breaking into my house for a while."

Gai went up to his apartment, several floors higher, feeling bruises forming on his lips.
