I'm Just Trying To Keep Up With You

Summary:

Kay’s pregnant.

Kay’s pregnant.

Rain doesn’t quite know what to think. On one hand, she can’t believe that Tyler would have let Kay come up here if he knew about the baby in her stomach. On the other hand, Rain can’t imagine giving birth in a place like Jackson’s Star. Or raising a child there.

They all turned out relatively okay, but that doesn't mean that it’s a best case scenario.

(Kay and Rain have an extended conversation aboard the Corbellan while they wait for Andy, Tyler and Bjorn)

Work Text:

Kay’s pregnant.

Kay’s pregnant.

Rain doesn’t quite know what to think. On one hand, she can’t believe that Tyler would have let Kay come up here if he knew about the baby in her stomach. On the other hand, Rain can’t imagine giving birth in a place like Jackson’s Star. Or raising a child there.

They all turned out relatively okay, but that doesn't mean that it’s a best case scenario.

Still, this is….it could get dangerous. Hopefully it isn’t - for their sake, as well as Tyler and Andy aboard the Renaissance - but they still don’t really know what’s waiting for them on the station.

She supposes that’s why Kay’s still here, on the Corbellan , but that doesn’t mean she isn’t uneasy.

“I’ll be fine,” Kay cuts in, clearly able to tell what Rain’s thinking. She’s staring at her from her spot laying down on the bed, Rain kneeling beside her. “And if anything goes wrong, you’re here.”

Rain just chuckles, letting out a small “ha” as she shakes her head. “I wouldn’t put your life in my hands.”

“I don’t know,” Kay rolls her eyes, a shiver running down Rain’s spine…..a shiver that she chooses not to analyze. Not in the slightest. “You can take care of yourself. You’ve been taking care of Andy for years.”

“Andy and I take care of each other,” Rain counters, cheeks flushing at Kay’s stare. “We take care of each other.”

Kay just sighs, knowing that this is going nowhere. “If you say so. But speaking of….have anyone else taking care of you? Besides Andy.”

Rain’s not even sure where to begin with that, providing Kay a blank stare in response.

A blank stare that only makes Kay groan as she sinks into the bed just a little bit more. “A guy, Rain. No way you’ve been single since Tyler.”

Again, Rain doesn’t answer, figuring a blank stare is answer enough.

“R…Rain!” Kay lets her indignation show, and this time, Rain can’t help but laugh. “Not even a girl?”

“I…how did you know that I….”

She’s never told anyone about that.  About liking girls.

It’s not a secret, not really. Humanity is far past the point of caring about someone’s sexuality, and has been since the creation of synthetics. Still, Rain keeps to herself and doesn’t share those parts of her being that she doesn't want to. Not that she’s purposefully hiding anything from Kay, she’s just…she’s just never advertised it.

“I have eyes, Rain,” Kay rolls her eyes, like it’s obvious . “You always looked at me as long as you would look at Tyler. Or at Navarro.”

“Right,” Rain sighs, letting her head lull forward just a little. It earns her a hand ruffling her short locks, and a smile blooms on her face. “No girls. There’s never been a girl, actually.”

“Huh…”

“What?”

Kay just waves it off though, like there’s absolutely nothing behind that comment. “Just surprised. You were always a real catch.”

“Oh. Huh,” Rain rolls her eyes. This isn’t really what they need to be talking about right now, her lack of a love life, but she supposes there’s nothing else to really do at the moment, not until they hear from Andy, Bjorn or Tyler. Besides, she’s missed talking to Kay, so might as well take the opportunity that she’s been granted. “I’ve been busy. Working so that Andy and I can get off of Jackson’s Star.”

“Still,” Kay sighs, like it’s the biggest injustice in the world. “Everyone was into you. Almost as many guys - and girls - that were into me.”

Rain chooses not to make a comment about where that’s left Kay (namely with a baby in her belly from an unknown father). She also chooses not to comment on where that’s left her (namely being denied legal passage off of Jackson’s Star and still under the grip of Weyland-Yutani).

“Different priorities, I guess,” is what Rain decides to go with. Judging by the way that Kay shrugs, she thinks it was the right call. “We ended up in the same place.”

“The road not taken and all that bullshit,” Kay sighs, but it’s quickly followed by a tilt of her head. “Tyler really missed you, you know. After you guys broke it off.”

“Kay….”

“I’m not saying that you made the wrong decision. Like you said, we’re all here. I’m just saying that if this works out, I think you’d have a good chance with Tyler. On Yvaga.”

For someone who says she sees a lot, Kay clearly doesn’t see enough.

“Tyler’s not…..he’s great,” Rain sighs, really wanting this to come across the right away. “And anyone would be lucky to be with him. But it’s not what I’m looking for. Not right now.”

It must work, judging by the sound of acknowledgement from the pregnant woman beside her. “Ah. Well, don’t tell him that. Guy still has a candle out for you. For your heart. And face. And ass.”

The last one is clearly just to fuck with her, and based on the bright flush that comes to Rain’s face, it works.

“You clearly haven’t changed.”

“It’s a fucking nice ass, Rain,” Kay smirks, Rain rolling her eyes as she gets to her feet. It’s just to get circulation going again after kneeling for so long, not to let Kay stare at the ass in question.

It’s not.

“I don’t remember you being so obsessed.”

“Admired from afar,” Kay grins, eyes trailing down to the object of her affection. “You’re fucking tiny, and you’ve got all of that . Can’t blame me for being jealous. Or for wanting to get my hands on it.”

God, Kay’s always been so confusing.

She’s not incredibly flirty but she still says things like this, and Rain’s never been good at volleying it back at her.

“I think that’s your pregnancy hormones talking,” is what Rain decides to go with, because isn’t that just incredible flirting.

“Maybe,” Kay pouts - Rain can’t tell if it’s because of her flirting or not - as she closes her eyes for just a second. “It’s not, but maybe.”

“I should um…” Rain stammers, because she’s just not in the right mind to deal with this right now. She needs to take care of Andy, and they need to get to Vyaga, and Tyler’s here and Kay is pregnant and….it’s a lot.

It’s a lot, but maybe, they could….she thinks that they could.

“It’s okay, Rain,” Kay smiles, and Rain can’t help but think that it, truly, is. “We have time.”

Notes:

Just another short little Rain Carradine thing because I continue to be in deep for her, and Cailee Spaeny, all while still thinking about this movie. Hope you guys like it!
