Hogwarts 1978 (before the first wizarding war)
Severus felt his cheeks flush and he looked at Lily who pointed her wand at James. “I don't need help from a filthy mudblood!” He sneered. He grabbed his dropped books and he pushed past the marauders and Lily.
Lily watched as he left and she put her wand in her pocket. She felt tears fall and she looked at James. “Don't do anything. Any of you.” She looked at the group. She wiped her eyes and she walked away. Lily went to an empty classroom on the 5th floor. She sat down and she leaned her back against one of the walls. She chewed on her lip trying not to cry. She tugged the sleeves of her sweater over her hands and she let out a breath.
He had promised to never call her by that name. Ever. He was supposed to be her best friend. The person she could trust the most. Why would he say that about her? He promised her that he was different. He promised her that he would never hurt her like that.
Lily sniffled and she grabbed her photobook out of her bag. She grabbed out the photos with Severus and she crumpled them. She grabbed her wand and she pointed at the photos. “Incendio.” She whispered. She watched as the photos turned to ash. She grabbed her bag and she got up. She wiped her eyes and she held her head high and she walked to the Gryffindor common room.
She wouldn't let this bother her. She was Lily Evan's for Merlin's sake. Her sister has called her worse things.
“Lily, are you okay?” Sirius asked, looking at her.
“I'm fine Sirius.” She sat down on the couch. She handed Remus his book back. “Thank you for letting me borrow it.” She cleared her throat. “I'm going to my dormitory. I'll see you guys later.”
She went to her dormitory and she went through her things. She looked at the letters from Severus and she scoffed. She crumpled those up as well and she grabbed out her wand. “Incendia.” She watched as the letters turned into ash. She flopped on her bed and she stared at the ceiling and she stayed like that until the sunrise. She managed to fall asleep but she didn't sleep very well.
Lily walked to potions and she felt herself bump into someone. She looked up and she saw long black hair. She saw the green and silver serpent on the robes and she inhaled.
“Lily…” Severus started to say. He looked at her. “Can we talk?”
“Why would you want to talk to me? I'm just a mudblood.” She pushed past him and she walked into potions. She sat next to James who was digging in his bag. “What are you looking for?” Lily asked, looking at him.
He jumped slightly. “Lily. Hi. I didn't see you there.”
“I figured you wouldn't mind if I sat here.” Lily set out her potions textbook and she put her hair up in a ponytail.
“I don't mind…and I was looking for a quill.” James grabbed a quill from his bag. The quill was bent and the tip was broken. He sighed.
Lily grabbed a quill out of her bag and she handed it to him. “Here. I have plenty. You can keep it.” She gave him a small smile.
“Thank you Lily Flower.” He said with a grin. “I'll give you one back when class is over.”
“Don't worry about it.” She opened her potions book and she started reading it. “I wonder what Professor Slughorn is going to make us brew today.” She hummed quietly to herself.
Severus looked over at Lily who was next to James. He felt his heart break. He looked back down at his potions book.
“It's for the best Snape.” Lucius Malfoy said, looking at Severus. “She's filth. It's about time you recognized that.”
“Right.” Severus looked down and he picked at invisible lint on his robes.
“You're friends with Narcissa right?”
“Cissa is one of my closest friends. Yes.” Well besides Lily…if Lily was even his friend anymore he thought to himself.
“Can you do me a favor?”
Severus nodded. “Sure.”
“Put in a good word for me…she's a pureblood from a good family and I fancy her.”
“Okay.” Severus said, going back to his notes. He wouldn't tell Narcissa right away. In his opinion Lucius Malfoy was a pompous git who was spoiled rotten by his annoying parents.
The friendship between Lily and Severus never mended after he called her a mudblood, and Severus never stopped loving her. He would be damned if he let his godson suffer the same fate.
Hogwarts 1999 (after the second wizarding war)
Severus was brewing a healing potion with Draco as his thoughts ran. It was times like this, times of quiet and solitude that made him think about all of the choices he's made in his life.
“Uncle Severus.” Draco said, snapping Severus out of his trance.
Severus looked at him. “Yes Draco?”
“There's this girl…” Draco set down the ingredients he was holding.
“Can't you talk to your mother about this?” Severus looked up from his cauldron.
“She's a few months older than me. She's smart. She's one of the best students here.”
“It's Hermione Granger isn't it?” Severus asked, looking at him.
Draco felt his face flush. “Yes.”
“Apologize Draco. Don't stop apologizing. Prove that you're sorry. When she forgives you. Never hurt her again.”
He nodded. “She won't accept my apology.”
“You have the chance to apologize. Take it.” Severus set down his wand. “take it and don't ruin it.”
“I won't ruin it Uncle Severus.” Draco nodded and he added the ingredients to the cauldron.
“Prove to her that you've changed.”
“I will.” Draco said, looking at him. “How do I prove it to her?” He asked cautiously.
“I never got to prove it to her. I can't give you that answer…don't make the same mistake I did.”
“I won't.” Draco assured him.
