I'm with you

Summary:

Yesterday I saw the teaser and one short scene popped into my head.

Work Text:

Kate entered her bedroom and sighed loudly, closing her eyes. She was exhausted. The last few days have been crazy, full of fear and uncertainty. Additionally, tonight had assured her that the enemies were in her own country, in the highest echelons of the White House.
Just today, she and Hal attended a diplomatic reception that Vice President Grace Penn also attended. Her and Hal's suspicions about the threats became even more real. The vice president was certainly not her ally.

Kate fell heavily onto the bed. Her elegant silver dress was uncomfortable, she just wanted to take it off and be free from it, from all her problems. After a moment, Hal entered the bedroom. He glanced at her briefly and crossed the room, took off his jacket without a word, threw it aside, and went to the window. He didn't say anything. He watched the mansion's illuminated driveway.

Kate stared at his back and wondered if she could trust him. She wanted so badly to be able to trust him. She wanted so much to find support in him, to feel his self-confidence, to know that he was always on her side, that he would always catch her when she faltered. She needed him. She needed her husband, her friend and her one true ally. She had to believe someone. She felt like she was on the verge of breakdown, tears were dangerously welling up in her eyes. Unable to stop herself, she let out a shaky breath.

He heard her nervous sigh. He already knew where he belonged, where his loyalty lay. He and Kate have always been a good team and it's time to remind others of that. He ran a hand through his hair and slowly turned to Kate. He saw his wife, she was so small against the background of the huge bed, she seemed defenseless and lost. She looked ahead, but he knew her thoughts were wandering, he saw that she was trying to find herself and sort everything out.

He approached her quietly but decisively. He knelt in front of her and grabbed her hands - they were so small in his large ones. She didn't react.
- Kate... I'm here. I'm with you. You're not alone in this... - he whispered.

She felt numb, but Hal's touch slowly made her regain consciousness and come back to herself. She raised her eyes to look at him. He knelt in front of her and stared intently at her face. She carefully raised her hand and touched his cheek, which still had a faint trace of the cut. She gently brushed it with her thumb. At this gesture, he grabbed her hand and kissed it in the middle.

- Do you promise? - she asked.
- I promise.
