“beomgyu! it’s not safe,” you whispered, trailing close behind the boy.
he giggled, ignoring your pleas as he flew closer to the open window. “can’t you smell that, though?” he sighed. “it’s been ages since i’ve been able to have human food.”
“that’s because it’s stealing,” you frowned. “and you know-”
“i know, i know. humans already hate us; let’s not give them another reason to,” beomgyu rolled his eyes. “they’ve never caught me before, have they?”
“no,” you started, your voice quieter as you arrived at the window. “but you’re being careless!”
“am not. i’ll be in and out. promise.” he gently tapped your nose with his thumb, his way of reassuring you.
you frowned but slowly nodded your head. “in and out. i’m not leaving without you,” you paused. “and bring me back something too?”
he grinned. “of course, i will.”
beomgyu let a gust of wind carry him inside, leaving you alone on the window frame.
the smell was even more intoxicating as he entered the house; the human here was baking. and from the looks of it, they had company. there were trays of cookies as high as mountains, cupcakes the size of a small house ― beomgyu didn’t know what to go for.
lost in his decision-making, beomgyu didn’t notice the human enter the room. they brushed past him, sending him flying out of the air and into the array of food. he, thankfully, had a soft landing in the frosting of a cupcake.
crawling out of the sticky mess, beomgyu laughed at the imprint of himself on the cupcake. he could already imagine your panic, and prepared himself for your scolding upon his return.
the human had returned to the heatbox, opening it to place in another batch of cookies. beomgyu took the lack of attention to yank a few chunks out of the beomgyu-decorated cupcake beside him, shoving his pockets full.
it was only when he tried to fly that he realized his predicament.
the decadent icing had fully coated the back of his wings, preventing him from getting off the kitchen table. the trek back to the window would be lengthy and likely impossible. how could he scale a perfectly smooth wall?
he ducked behind a stack of cookies as the human approached the table, hoping he wouldn’t be seen. he was tempting fate, stuck in a human world with his only means of escape being his two feet. and to be honest, beomgyu barely touched ground on a typical day ― he wouldn’t be fast.
beomgyu glanced at the window, furrowing his eyebrows. first, he’d have to get off the table, and the only way he could see to do that was by latching onto the human’s clothing and scaling down. but then he had to worry about being stepped on, flattened into the tile floor.
if he even got that far.
he didn’t have to think for long, though. you landed gracefully in front of him, eyes flickering attentively. “i told you this was stupid. i knew you were going to get in trouble.” you paused to catch your breath, shaking as the human walked past the table again, exiting the kitchen. “now. we need to go now.”
“but-”
you grabbed his hands. “do not let go.”
struggling, you jumped into the air, pulling him along with you. beomgyu judged the distance between you and the window. could you actually carry the both of you the whole way? failure would surely mean death, the floor now the biggest threat in the room.
he tried to cooperate with your movements. beomgyu knew just how much courage it took you to come into the building, and now, seeing the strain on your face, he knew you were scared.
you made it halfway to the window when the human came back in. beomgyu glanced back at them, waiting for the moment they noticed.
adrenaline kicked in the same moment they caught sight of the two of you. before beomgyu could say a word, you flew faster, squeezed his hands tighter. he closed his eyes, hoping you’d make it to safety, but expecting this to be the end.
all for a stupid cupcake.
when he opened them again, he was falling. he landed in the open bud of a tulip, you tumbling to the ground beside him.
you groaned, pushing yourself to your feet, wiping the dirt off your freshly scraped knees.
beomgyu rolled out of the tulip, landing on the ground with an oof.
you looked at him expectantly.
“look, you can have everything i have. you saved my life. i don’t-”
“beomgyu, it’s-” you stopped. the boy had already emptied his pockets, placing the food into your hands.
“all for you. i promise i’ll never do anything like that again.”
you smiled, taking a bite of one of the frosting-covered pieces. “i must say, it was worth it.”
beomgyu grinned, his gaze landing on a bit of frosting that lingered on the corner of your lips. “i’m glad you enjoy it,” he said softly, wiping the glaze off with his thumb before pressing it to your nose, in the same reassuring manner he always did.
you scrunched your nose, offering him a piece of the cupcake. “we should get you cleaned up.”
beomgyu nodded, accepting the food. “don’t tell anyone.”
“i’ll never say a word.”
