Tulips Always Hurt

Work Text:

Pyx didn't quite know how she felt about her soulmate. Well, she knew she didn't hate them, not anymore, and not like she did in the beginning. Now she just felt hurt whenever she looked at them.

She knew, logically, that being jealous of a tower was ridiculous but she couldn't help it. Knowing she was basically on the same level, if not a level lower, then that stupid thing. She glared at it if it even entered her field of vision, all the disdain she had for it bubbling to the surface quite often.

It was because of that jealousy that Pyx knew she clearly had some sort of positive feelings towards Everest, she just couldn't figure out how to deal with them. If she didn't like Everest even a tiny bit she would probably just ignore the comments they made about the tower. So clearly, she didn't dislike Everest which was good but she was incredibly jealous of the stupid tower.

Maybe the jealousy is what compelled her to accept Kier's deal of secret soulmates.

In full honesty, when she and Kier met up, she was on guard, it might've been a grace period but it could've been a setup. When she was handed Kier's book/letter, she was confused but continued to read until-

I'm just saying I wouldn't leave you for a tower.

Pyx felt strange towards that sentence, part of her leaping at the concept. Someone who wouldn't compare her with a tower, that sounded amazing. Deep down though, she knew it wasn't about just being compared to the tower, if that were the case then she'd be fine because Generic, Katherine, and Milo never once said anything that could remotely mean she was being compared to a tower. She knew deep down that realistically she only cared that Everest compared her to the tower. However, there was a little bit of a boost in dopamine which she had desperately needed for a while now.

On the other hand, the whole thing with Kier, the idea of it made her feel off. She didn't dislike Everest but it certainly felt like Everest disliked her. If they did she couldn't blame them, she died twice and caused chaos wherever she went, like when she burned down the roof of Kier and Scott's tower even after Everest explicitly told her not to, that they didn't need enemies.

Pyx held the book as she listened to Kier talk, not quite sure if she was going to accept this. She didn't want to betray Everest like that, she really, really didn't want to, no matter how much she hated the tower, she didn't hate Everest. It was then Kier brought up something Pyx hadn't ever known. Apparently, Everest wanted to be paired with Kier initially.

Pyx knew she was a very jealous person, of course she was, she hated a tower. Now, despite the red, ugly part that screamed and howled to kill Kier where they stood for the fact of that alone, Pyx couldn't help but feel like maybe she was really just always below another person in Everest's eyes. Maybe, if Kier was being genuine, she needed someone who wouldn't put anything else above her. She was selfish, after all.

Pyx was going to accept this 'secret soulmates' thing with Kier. At this point, she didn't know whether it was to spite Everest or because she really had nothing left. Her hive was dead

The only flower she had on her that wasn't a gift from someone else was the pink tulip. She handed it off to Kier, feeling like it's meaning was partly a lie. When Kier gave her a white tulip in return, she couldn't help but remember a situation from a while back, one where she gave Everest a white tulip. It made her sick, but Pyx just figured maybe that was normal in this kind of situation, just trying to defend herself from herself at this point.

Trust was something Pyx had weird feelings about, she could trust even after something went horribly wrong but it was rare. She could trust Everest after they killed her in a life past. She could trust Milo after they let their team abandon her. She couldn't trust Scott, she knew she would never be able to again. Maybe, she could trust Kier, even though everyone left was on death's doorstep, maybe she could trust Kier for whatever little bit of life she had left.
