In the vast flower field, the warm sunlight danced over rows of wildflowers, their vibrant colors swaying in the gentle breeze. It had taken a full day of begging for Yuji to convince Megumi to come here. And now, standing in the middle of a sprawling meadow, Megumi was beginning to question why he had even agreed.
"You really dragged me all the way out here to pick flowers?" Megumi muttered, eyes narrowed at Yuji as he plucked a few stems absentmindedly.
"Yeah! Relax, it’ll be fun!" Yuji chirped, crouched a few feet away, already pulling flowers into a makeshift bouquet. His tone was teasing, and there was that playful glint in his eyes Megumi had come to expect. "Besides, you need to get outside more, Mr. Broody."
Megumi shot him a look, then reached out and lightly smacked the back of Yuji's head. "Shut up. I’m not broody."
Yuji laughed, rubbing the back of his head with a grin. "You’re broody, Megumi. It’s part of your charm."
Megumi huffed, his fingers twitching slightly as he looked around. If anyone else had called him broody, he would’ve been annoyed. But with Yuji, it was... different. Maybe it was the warmth in his voice when he said it, or the way he always found a way to make Megumi laugh at himself, even if it was just a tiny smirk. Still, Megumi wasn’t about to admit that out loud.
Yuji continued to gather flowers with an enthusiasm that bordered on childishness, and Megumi watched quietly. The black-haired sorcerer had a reputation for being serious, stoic, and distant, but there was something about being here, with Yuji, that made it hard to keep that up. Something about Yuji always softened his edges.
Yuji held up a cluster of bright yellow daisies. "Think I should put these in your hair? Might add to your whole mysterious, cool-guy thing."
Megumi smacked him again, though his lips twitched into the slightest hint of a smile. "Try it, and I’ll knock you out."
"See?" Yuji teased, leaning into Megumi's space. "There’s that broody charm I was talking about."
"Would you stop saying that?" Megumi grumbled, walking a few paces away to focus on picking his own flowers, but he could feel the flush creeping into his cheeks.
For a while, they moved in relative silence, the only sound being the rustling of flowers and Yuji’s occasional humming. Megumi’s movements were more deliberate—he would select a flower, carefully examine it, and then place it into his growing collection. Yuji, on the other hand, was messier, picking whatever caught his eye, grinning like an idiot every time he found something colorful.
“Hey, Megumi, come here for a sec!” Yuji called, standing a little way off with a bouquet of flowers in his hand.
“What is it now?” Megumi sighed but walked over anyway, his usual annoyance more of a front than anything.
Yuji held out the bouquet with a grin. “For you.”
Megumi blinked at it, surprised. It wasn’t just a random assortment—Yuji had somehow gathered forget-me-nots and lavender, Megumi’s favorite flowers, into a surprisingly well-arranged bouquet. He took it without saying anything, the weight of the gesture sinking in. He glanced at Yuji, who was watching him expectantly, his eyes softer than usual.
“How did you…?”
“You mentioned it once,” Yuji said casually as if it was no big deal. “Thought it’d make you smile.”
Megumi’s heart did a weird flip, the kind he didn’t know how to deal with, so he shoved the feeling down. But the flush on his cheeks deepened, and he turned his face slightly away. “Thanks. It’s… nice.”
Yuji chuckled. “I knew you’d like it. You’re not as hard to read as you think, Megumi.”
"Shut up," Megumi muttered, though the insult had no bite.
After a brief pause, Yuji plopped down in the grass and started weaving flowers together. “Alright, now we’re making flower crowns.”
“Flower crowns?” Megumi raised an eyebrow, unsure whether Yuji was being serious or just trying to mess with him.
“Yep!” Yuji beamed. “You make one for me, and I’ll make one for you. It’ll be fun.”
Megumi sighed. "This is dumb."
Yuji laughed, patting the ground beside him. "Just humor me, Megumi. You might actually enjoy it."
Reluctantly, Megumi sat down beside him. He watched as Yuji expertly began twisting the stems of the flowers together, his movements quick and practiced. “You’re too good at this.”
“What can I say?” Yuji grinned. “I’m full of surprises.”
Megumi’s attempt was less confident, fumbling with the delicate stems and trying not to break them. Yuji noticed his struggle and scooted closer, his hand brushing lightly against Megumi’s as he guided him through the motions. "Here, like this," Yuji said, his voice softer now.
The closeness made Megumi’s heart race, though he tried to focus on the flowers, not on the warmth of Yuji’s hand against his. After a few minutes, he got the hang of it, and they worked in relative silence again, their knees almost touching. There was something oddly peaceful about it, and Megumi found himself relaxing more than he expected.
When they finished, Yuji leaned over and placed his flower crown on Megumi’s head. “There. Now you’re officially the coolest guy in the field.”
Megumi rolled his eyes. “You’re an idiot.”
“An idiot who’s having fun,” Yuji shot back with a grin. “Your turn.”
Megumi picked up the crown he had made—a little lopsided, but not bad for his first try—and gently placed it on Yuji’s head. He couldn’t help but notice how natural it looked on him, how the soft colors of the flowers contrasted with Yuji’s warm, golden skin and the sun-kissed pink of his hair. Yuji looked... cute. Megumi hated how his chest tightened at the sight.
Yuji beamed at him. “How do I look?”
Megumi hesitated for a second before answering quietly. “You look good.”
There was a flicker of something in Yuji’s eyes, something more than the usual teasing light, but he quickly covered it up with a grin. “Thanks, Megumi. That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.”
Megumi’s response was another smack on the back of Yuji’s head, though this time it was lighter, almost playful. “Don’t get used to it.”
Yuji laughed and leaned back on his hands, gazing up at the sky as the sun began to dip lower, casting the field in a soft, golden glow. “This was a good idea, right?”
Megumi looked at him, at the way the sunlight framed Yuji’s face, the way his smile lit up his whole expression. He couldn’t deny that being here, with Yuji, felt… nice. More than nice, actually. But those were feelings Megumi wasn’t ready to acknowledge, so he gave a simple nod.
“Yeah,” Megumi said quietly. “It was.”
For a moment, the world around them seemed to slow, the air warm and gentle, the only sound the soft rustling of flowers in the breeze. Neither of them spoke, but something unspoken passed between them, a connection that had been building, subtle and quiet, but undeniable.
Yuji broke the silence first, turning to Megumi with a small, knowing smile. "I’m glad you came with me, you know."
Megumi glanced away, feeling that familiar heat rise in his chest. "Yeah, me too."
And though nothing more was said, the way they sat together in the fading light—their matching flower crowns, the soft smiles on their faces—said everything.
