It was a typically quiet evening at Hogwarts, with the sun setting behind the grand castle’s towers, casting long shadows over the grounds. In a small cupboard that Draco Malfoy had ingeniously transfigured with an undetectable extension charm, the atmosphere was decidedly cosier. A plush, overstuffed sofa occupied the limited space, allowing Draco and Hermione to sit quite comfortably across from one another. The air was infused with the scent of old books and a hint of lavender, thanks to a small sprig that Draco had stashed discreetly in a corner.
Tentative friends for a few weeks, the pair had navigated the complexities of their past, sidestepping the tension that once defined their interactions.
Hermione, intrigued by Draco’s mention of legilimency over dinner this evening, had insisted she learned it too. “Teach me how to do it,” she had demanded as soon as they had retreated to their little sanctuary, an air of challenge in her voice.
Draco, though initially hesitant, had finally acquiesced and now, they found themselves sitting cross-legged on the small sofa, tension stitched into the very fibres of their conversation. “Okay, concentrate,” he instructed softly, his usual bravado muted by the warmth in his eyes. “It’s not just about reading thoughts. You have to connect with the person’s mind. I'll open the connection first and you step through.”
Hermione nodded, the seriousness of the moment settling down around them. “Let’s try it,” she said, her voice even and confident. The truth was, despite her excitement, nerves danced in her stomach. She couldn’t quite shake the feeling that this was incredibly intimate.
As their eyes locked, Draco leaned in closer, his expression focused. “Are you ready?” he asked, a vulnerable note slipping past his usual cool demeanour. Hermione took a deep breath, nodding again, a flurry of butterflies tickling her gut as their faces drew closer. She could smell the sweet minty scent of his breath as it tickled her lips.
“Legilimens,” he whispered, closing his eyes as he reached out with his mind. Hermione felt a gentle warmth envelop her thoughts. It was as though he was brushing against her consciousness, careful yet assertive. She felt her own thoughts become temporarily quiet as his presence settled in.
Hermione pressed back, using the bridge to slip deeper into the connection, stepping cautiously into his mind. Hermione was careful to avoid painful memories or bombshell secrets, instead concentrating on a gentle entrance into his mind, respecting the vulnerabilities buried there. Memories of laughter, late-night escapades with his friends, and shards of regret floated past. Yet, they were overshadowed by something elusive that she couldn’t quite grasp—affection, perhaps?
A feeling of warmth enveloped her as she noticed fragments of thoughts — and suddenly something shifted. She found herself looking at a scene that was startlingly intimate: she was standing before him, her hair tousled in the Autumn breeze, a hint of laughter alighting her features. Draco’s point of view captured her with a tenderness that momentarily stole her breath.
One memory shifted into another- her eating beaide him, laughing with friends, pouring over books- each one filled with admiration. In the short moments that followed, Hermione realised, knew too well that she'd caught a glimpse of something deep and personal—something Draco had never expressed in words. Affection. Longing. Were those shades of worry that accompanied it? Draco’s gaze bore into her, alive with emotion that was unmistakably directed towards her. No tricks in this moment, no misdirection; it was all there, pure and unscripted.
Hermione blinked as their connection faltered for a split second, and the world around her surged back with a reality that felt too stark. “Draco,” she breathed, eyes wide with surprise. The revelations had momentarily rendered her speechless. The feelings she had sensed before—a camaraderie mixed with an undeniable chemistry—had crystallised before her very eyes.
“You weren't meant to see that,” he stammered, his usually composed demeanour cracking at the edges. The blush creeping across his cheeks was unusual for a boy who had always embodied a certain poise. “I— I didn't mean for that to happen.”
“Wait, you didn’t mean for me to see how you feel?” Hermione asked, her heart racing. The reality of their intermingling feelings hung thick in the air, and she couldn't help the laughter that bubbled up from within.
Draco looked flustered, averting his eyes to anywhere but her, his thoughts blinking in and out like a stuttering flame. “Look, Granger, it’s complicated. I never thought—”
“Complicated is my middle name,” she interjected with a grin, attempting to ease the weight of the moment. But as she caught sight of him, looking so uncharacteristically vulnerable, her heart softened. “But… I’m glad I saw that.”
“Really?” he asked incredulously, the surprise in his voice laced with the faintest glimmer of hope. “You’re not horrified?”
“Why would I be?” It was a straightforward question, one that stemmed from honesty. “Draco, I mean… You’re not the boy you were, and I like the man you're becoming.”
Before Draco could respond, Hermione reached out and took his hand, emboldened by the knowledge they’d just shared, both unnerving and exhilarating. The touch of her skin against his was electric, and he could feel that spark kindle hope in the cocoon of their makeshift sanctuary.
“I didn’t expect this,” he admitted, running a hand through his tousled hair, the gesture highlighting the unease that still lingered.
Hermione nodded, her heart fluttering at the anticipation of what came next. “I think we’re already in much deeper than we imagined, Draco,” she said softly, her grip firm as she kept his hand cradled in hers.
The air around them shifted, filling the small cupboard with a budding promise; something both fragile and fierce at once.
As they shared a lingering gaze, unspoken words filled the spaces between them, weaving together threads of a newfound connection that felt both terrifying and wonderful.
