Work Text:
"Sorscha?" Carly entered the staff lounge and sat next to her coworker.
Sorscha looked up from her phone at the apprentice. "Yes, Carly?" You could hear her rolling the 'r' in Carly's name.
"How'd you know?"
"What do you mean?"
"That you wanted to marry her. How'd you know?"
Sorscha pursed her lips as she thought on the question, "I think it's because she lets me be confrontational."
Carly stifled a laugh. "I didn’t think letting you pick fights was a big standard."
The pigtailed daycare worker rolled her eyes. "It's not just that. I've had partners that didn't like conflict, so whenever I would confront someone, they would scold me about it. Clodagh doesn't do that; she'll explain how I could say things in a nicer way, but she doesn't treat me like I'm looking to start things. She understands that I do it because I protect the people that I love."
"Awww..." Carly choked back a sob. "Here come the waterworks." She began to fan her face.
"Ah, hold on, hold on." Sorscha did not want to feel the same level of awkwardness from earlier, especially not on her break. "Wanna hear a story from when Clodagh and I were in university that really made me sure I wanted to pop the question?"
Carly looked back at her, quivering lips and all. "That would be nice."
Sorscha sighed in relief. "Okay, it doesn’t necessarily involve a fight, but I think you'll like it."
“Babe, I already told you it’s fine.” Clodagh grabbed her girlfriend’s hand to stop her pacing “I’ve been saving up, so it’s not that big of a hit.”
Sorscha took a deep breath to calm herself ”But you wanted to use it for something else. And now some eejit is out there, not feeling an ounce of remorse.” she began to pace again
“Okay, okay. What if I make a report?” Clodagh pulled Sorscha back
Sorscha nodded her head to agree “You could but what if they don’t find who did it?”
”Then I’m out whatever it takes to fix my car, but it’s not too bad given that I still get to commute with you.” Clodagh was smiling but there was a bit of sadness in her eyes.
Sorscha smiled back as she cupped Clodagh’s face “Alright, let’s go get some ice cream while they fix it up.”
”What kind of ice cream did you guys get?”
Sorscha narrowed hey eyes at Carly “Carly, it’s been years, do you really think I would know that?”
Carly stared back at Sorscha with a big grin “Feel like you do and just don’t wanna share.”
”Ugh fine, we got mint chocolate chip.”
“Mint chocolate chip?!” Carly scrunched her nose up in disgust “That’s basically toothpaste.”
”That both Clodagh and I enjoy. Can I get back to the story?”
“Fine.”
”I wasn’t there for this next part, but Clodagh did tell me about it.”
“Hiya Clodagh.”
Clodagh’s eyes widened when Mitch, a guy she’s rejected about a million times, put his arm around her shoulders as he fell into step
”D’ya mind?” she stopped and waited for him to pull his arm away. She didn’t like to be mean but she was not against establishing her boundaries.
Mitch looked annoyed but it’s not like he hasn’t been told this before so he just gave her a tight lipped smile as his arm returned to his side “Not at all, I just wanted to ask if you were still sure about that Sorscha is all?”
“What do you mean?”
“Didn’t you have to take your car to the shop?”
“Yeah, someone went and slashed one of my tires. It costs me a bit of money to get it replaced. What’s that have to do with Sorscha?”
”I could’ve fixed it.”
Carly let out a shocked gasp “He did not!”
”Oh, he did.” Sorscha was rubbing her temples, the memory alone was stressful
”What happened next?” Carly leant in
Sorscha looked at the apprentice with an exasperated face “What do you mean what happened next?! She called the authorities on him.”
”Oh. That’s it?”
”No Carly, I went and beat the eejit to death with my purple belt in karate.”
”Really?”
”No!”
”Oh. How is that what made you sure about popping the question?”
”Oh right, that’s what we were talking about. Um… Clodagh told him that he should be grateful she called the authorities and not me.” Sorscha couldn’t contain her smile “She told him to perceive me as a threat.”
”Awww… you’re like her guard dog.”
“More than that. I’m her Autumn!”
