5 times they protected each other, and the one time it truly mattered

“Yamada!” Shouta found himself trying to run back toward the scene, but another pro held him steady.

“The building’s unstable!” He heard the other pro explain, yet his ears rung- he could only focus on Hizashi, his only love, now trapped and alone.

Work Text:

1)

Shouta felt his mind wander as he stared out the window of UA, his teacher had been going on about something that simply didn’t bother him- his thoughts wandered to sleep, as he found his eyes momentarily closing.

That was until he was woken by a yell, a yell he could recognise anywhere.

“Ahhhhh!!” The yell of someone with a voice quirk- Shouta’s best friend, Yamada, was stood on top of his desk, his usually controlled voice quirk filling the classroom.

”Someone get it away from me!” He continued, his eyes stuck on his chair. Shouta saw most of his classmates covering their ears, he knew Yamada’s quirk could get out of control when he was truly scared- so he looked for the source of the breach.

Shouta’s eyes soon rested on the problem: a singular spider was crawling on Yamada’s seat, it’s body relatively large- but not large enough to scare a regular person, though he knew his best friend’s phobia. Shouta looked to the front of the classroom to see his teacher with her ears covered, trying to drown out the yells, so he got up from his own seat and made his way over to Hizashi’s desk.

Once he arrived at the desk, he bent down and picked up the spider- walking to the classroom door, before depositing it outside. A now-relieved Hizashi had gotten down from his desk, apologising to his classmates.

“Shouta you saved me!” He grinned sheepishly, “so sorry my quirk activated… you know how I get around bugs!” He looked slightly embarrassed as the teacher glared at him.

“You have to get better control over your fear, you’re going to deafen yourself,” Shouta chuckled, a rare occasion,  “or somebody else.”

“I will man, I swear! So sorry guys!” He apologised to his classmates once more before sitting back down- his cheeks flushed with embarrassment. But he felt safe enough to sit back down at his desk- all thanks to Shouta.

2)

Hizashi knew Shouta had been affected more by the attack than he was letting on- despite being married, he couldn’t let his walls down fully- especially when it came to getting injured. Hizashi concluded that this was the reason he found Shouta curled up on himself in their shared room during a nasty thunderstorm, his eyes staring off into nothingness as he clung to his curled up legs.

“Shou…?” Hizashi made his way to his husband, his arms up by his head- in case Shouta deemed him to be threatening, “just me… you ok?”

“Yeah… ‘m fine…” Shouta managed to grumble, as Hizashi sat down carefully next to him. Despite saying he was fine, Shouta couldn’t resist leaning his head into Hazashi’s shoulder.

“I know you’re not,” He found himself slightly smiling in response, his hands finding his husband’s hair and cradling his head, “Shou, let me help. I can make us some hot coffee and cocoa… and we can cuddle up on the couch.”

“‘m scared,” Shouta mumbled into Hizashi’s shoulder, as he felt himself being cradled in his arms, “it’s so loud, like the USJ was,” he admitted, “I thought they were gonna die, Yamada.”

“Well, all the little listeners are safe and sound thanks to you, songbird! You saved them, and you were the worst injured, they came out with scratches,” He explained to Shouta, “wait here, I’ve got something for this…” Hizashi got up gently and raced into another room to fetch something- he came back with some headphones, “noise cancelling,” he simply stated, before gently putting them onto his husband.

“Any better?” Hizashi signed- he knew the effect the noise cancelling headphones had, he often used them before he went deaf himself- and he knew Shouta couldn’t hear a thing he’d say, so he decided sign could work too.

“I love you” Shouta simply signed back, before crawling into his husband’s arms and collapsing in them- his breathing less panicked and his body more open. He’d clearly relaxed with the headphones- and was soon fast asleep in Hizashi’s arms, protected and safe.

3)

Shouta lay his head down on the desk of the staff room, his unmarked papers lying beneath his face. He’d been marking the entirety of 1A’s exams that afternoon- boredom slowly creeping in without the noise from his classroom- he hated to admit it, but he missed his problem children sometimes.

He let his mind wander to how Hizashi’s class must’ve been going- he was such a passionate teacher, he must be enjoying having 1A for English that day.

“Thinking of your boy toy?” A voice cooed from across the staff room, as Nemuri smiled at her friend, “poor Shou has been split from his love!”

“I’m just kind of bored, Nem,” Shouta stated plainly.

“Then you’ve really changed, I once knew a Shouta who would do anything to get away from his students, now he doesn’t want to part from them!” Nemuri approached him, pulling her turned close, “you’ve really become attached!”

“I have not, they just require more attention than normal students… they’re way more annoying,” Shouta tried to deflect. Yet, as if on cue, his phone rang- a display name popping up, ‘Hitoshi’ it read.

Shouta had given his number to Shinsou for training purposes; to schedule private training with him, since his arrival in 1A. It was rare that Shinsou called him, even rarer when he was in school- let alone in lesson. Shouta groaned as he picked up the phone, gesturing the issue to Nemuri.

“Hitoshi? What-“ He was cut off by a very familiar voice- not one belonging to Shinsou, but to…

“Mr. Aizawa sir! It’s Midoriya,” an almost frantic sounding voice echoed from the phone speaker.

“Midoriya? What’s wrong?” Shouta detected the urgency in his tone, “where’s Hitoshi?” He moved to put turn the phone speaker up, so Nemuri could listen- her ears picking up with curiousity.

“He’s with Mic-Sensei, you see, he’s passed out in the middle of class! He got all dizzy, quiet… which isn’t like him, and then just fell. We were quick enough to catch him, but he looks so pale-“ Ikuzu rambled, his nerves clearly breaking through- and Shouta understood the urgency of the situation.

“I’m on my way. Don’t hang up,” He jumped up from the staff room and sprinted into the hallways, chased closely by Nemuri, “we’re coming. Stay with him.”

Mere minutes later, Shouta had arrived in Hizashi’s familiar classroom, his eyes immediately darting to where his husband was lay on the floor- surrounded by his students. He pushed his way through the formed crowd, and made his way closer to Hizashi, he knelt down on the floor; joined only by Nemuri and Hitoshi.

“He works way too hard, Shou…” Nemuri stated, upon seeing Hazashi sprawled across the classroom floor, “I told you he shouldn’t have done that patrol before class…”

“I know,” Shouta mumbled, while leaning over Hizashi, “I knew he didn’t get any sleep… it’s been two nights, he’ll work himself into the ground.” He checked his husband over for injuries as he gently pulled Hizashi into his arms, “I’ll take him to Recovery Girl, Nem, do you mind covering this class?”

“Of course I don’t, Shou, get him rested,” she smiled reassuringly as Shouta stood up- husband tucked comfortably in his arms, his face peaceful.

“Thankyou, kids, I’ll make sure he’s ok- and thanks for ringing me,” Shouta acknowledged his class, “for once you helped, rather than create more problems for me.” His eyes focused on Shinsou, who looked particularly worried, “do… do you want to come with me, Shinsou?”

Shouta knew Hitoshi didn’t have many connections outside of school- but knew he and Hazashi were the closest thing he had to family. He especially looked to Hizashi for advice and support about his quirk, as voice quirks were often piled together- deemed as ‘dangerous’ and ‘beyond control’; Hitoshi saw Hizashi as his father, and he wasn’t about to separate them.

Hitoshi nodded in response and followed Shouta to Recovery Girl- watching as she assessed Hizashi carefully.

“There’s nothing much I can do, I’m afraid,” she began, “you know he works himself to the bone, Aizawa, all I can suggest is letting him get some rest- and he needs to rest, from ALL 3 of his jobs.”

Shouta nodded, “I’ll make sure he rests,” and he watched Shinsou visibly take a sigh of relief, “Hitoshi, go back to class, I’ll make sure he gets some sleep. I’ll tell you when he’s awake, so he can come and apologise for scaring you and the class,” he chuckled.

“Yes Sensei,” Hitoshi bore a small grin and left the office- leaving Hizashi safe with Aizawa- nestled protectively in his arms.

4)

Hizashi had noticed something was troubling his husband since the day before, so he woke up earlier- to make Shouta breakfast in bed. As he delivered the breakfast to their room, he opened the door to find Shouta sat up in bed- head in hands.

“Shou? Dear?” He carried the plate over to the bed and set it down, “I made breakfast.”

“Thanks, ‘Zashi,” Shouta mumbled, eyes not fully meeting his concerned glaze.

”Are you ok?” Hizashi dared to ask, as he sat back next to his husband. He knew that Shouta was a private person when it came to what was troubling him, but he always coughed it up eventually, with time and gentle pushing.

“‘M fine,” was the answer he was met with, a simple answer- something was bothering his husband, and Hizashi was determined to figure out the issue.

“Ok, you eat up! You know a good breakfast is the start to a good day, and since you’re always forgetting to eat- I thought I’d make you something to eat before I head to the radio station, then I’ll make Eri and Shinsou something to eat too, the little listeners need their food for the day!” Hizashi rambled, filling the silence of the room- he looked back at Shouta to see him match his glance with awe in his eyes, he knew his husband enjoyed his rambles, but something else was entrancing him today too.

“Eri nee-“ Shouta began, but was interrupted.

“A babysitter, I know! But, I was going to ask, can I take the little listener down to the radio station today? You always bring her to class, but she never sees what I do besides teaching and hero work! Please Shou!” Hizashi begged, and Shouta managed an easy grin at his husband’s antics- any worries momentarily forgotten.

“Sure, as long as you keep an eye on her,” Shouta warned.

“I’m great with kids Shou, and Eri loves being with her sweet Pops!” He grinned, but noticed a glint of sadness in Shouta’s eyes too, “ring me if you need me, okay dear?” Hizashi gently pressed, getting up from the bed and going to wake Shinsou and Eri up, giving his husband a parting kiss on the forehead.

Eri had been staying in the couple’s shared teacher dorm, with Shinsou staying in the dorm room across the hall- with the other student dorms. Despite the separation, Hizashi always woke Shinsou up and made him breakfast- a tradition of sorts, since he had no other family.

He felt as if Shouta was effected by something to do with the kids- he felt very strongly for all the kids in his class, but especially Eri and Hitoshi- he’d lay his life on the line for them, as would Hizashi. Hizashi especially loved the two little listeners due to their quirk training; they reminded him of when he was little. Hitoshi had a ‘dangerous’ voice-related quirk, just as he does, which he now flaunts with pride in the hero course. Eri had an out of control quirk that could harm those around her, just as Hizashi did when he was younger, but now she has aspirations of becoming a hero just like them- just like Hizashi. He loved having his pair of listeners around.

His pride only grew as Eri shone at the radio station, even making a special appearance on air- she caused quite the stir as radio executives and apprentices alike cooed at her cute antics.

When the show was over, and ‘Put your hands up’ radio was on hold for the night, Eri gushed to Aizawa about her day in their dorm- telling him about her appearance on air, and how Hizashi had taken her on a tour of the studio, letting her speak to music artists and directors alike.

“And then Dad, we- we…” she yawned, rubbing her eyes slightly, “we…” she trailed off and stared sleepily at Shouta- before being scooped up by Hizashi from behind.

“I guess I wore her out, Sho, time for sleep little listener,” he cooed at Eri fondly, feeling her slump in his arms already, “I’ll be back in a minute love.” Hizashi left the room for a while, coming back to Shouta with his arms empty and a fond smile on his face, “so, how’d training with Shinsou go?”

“It went good, he’s becoming more confident fighting and not using his ability,” Shouta wasn’t making direct eye contact with his husband as he sat beside him, “it’s… it’s good.”

“That’s great, Sho,” Hizashi smiled, “but something’s been bugging you, I know your signs, ya dig? What’s wrong?”

The floodgates opened as soon as the question was asked; Shouta had teared up, let them loose, and now small sobs racked his body, “Oh… songbird…” Hizashi pulled him close and let Shouta sob into his shoulder, rubbing small circles on his back for reassurance. Once Shouta began to calm down, Hizashi cupped his husband’s face fondly, “what’s wrong?”

“It’s a question, I’ve been meaning to ask…” Shouta mumbled, cheeks running dry again and tears drying up, “I’ve been so worried about your reply.”

“As long as it’s not ‘can we divorce?’ you shouldn’t be worried! It’s not, is it?” He fretfully added, awaiting the response.

“I’d never,” Hizashi breathed a sigh of relief at his response, “it’s about Shinsou and Eri.”

“What about them?” He enquired, “there’s nothing wrong, right?” Hizashi began to worry- his characteristically blunt husband had suddenly seemed apprehensive to ask a question, which worried him. It was out of character.

“I was going to ask… it’s ok if the answer’s no… whether we could adopt the two permanently? I mean they already practically live with us, they both call me Dad and you Pops- it just seems silly not to-“ Shouta began to awkwardly explain, his eyes not meeting Hizashi’s, until he was interrupted by his husband.

“I’d love to start a family with you, Shou. I’m surprised we haven’t done this sooner, if I’m being honest, it’s like we’re already a family- we may as well make it a permanent one! I would like nothing more, and I love those kids… our kids!” Hizashi grinned, “we just need to ask them, of course.” Shouta nodded in agreement.

And that’s how the night ended- with Hitoshi and Eri being asked their ideas on adoption, Shouta and Hizashi being met with very excited agreements from both of them, and the newfound family falling asleep together- cuddled up on the sofa. They had found safety in their dysfunctional family, and they all loved each other- more than anything.

5)

Shouta cared deeply about class 1A, though he’d never admit that to anyone aloud; though it was easy to deduct- as he was stood in front of a gang of common street villains, with Hizashi by his side, prepared to go to any means necessary to protect them.

“I know you’re all so eager to get involved, but stay back!” Shouta warned his class, his arm outstretched- as if his arm alone was a shield to protect them all, “you’re problem children- yet still I’m not going to let you get yourselves hurt.”

“Yah! Let the pros handle this, ya dig?!” Mic reiterated, “we will totally protect you!” He was stood at Eraser’s side- both dropping into their pro hero personas. He saw Hitoshi try and step forward, and shot him a ‘don’t you dare’ glare; no kids were going to get harmed under their supervision.

They were caught off guard, a class visit to a local zoo; visits normal kids would partake it, was a perfect place for a villain attack, apparently. They’d been enjoying their day, both Shouta and Hizashi exhausted from keeping track of 1A all day- Nemuri and Vlad had accompanied them too, but both had to leave early due to patrol- unfortunately enough.

“Kaminari, stop poking your fingers through the holes in the enclosure!” Shouta scolded, wrapping the offending teenager in his capture scarf, “there are so many signs that tell you that they bite- I’m not filling out paperwork for you.” He released Kaminari with a sigh as he watched the students run around the different enclosures- smiles on each and every face, they were normal teenagers here; no villains to terrorise them at the zoo.

Or so they thought.

Eraserhead and Present Mic stood down four villains; clearly each a common thug, but with powerful quirks. One looked like he had a strength-enhancing quirk, which made his legs look tiny compared to his massive upper body. Another had an extremely large mouth- teeth lining his jaw like a shark, a feral shark that had just smelt blood. The third had extended limbs- clearly easily manipulated and stretched out, which would wreak havoc on long-range attackers. The last was stood sheepishly behind the others, her hair covering most of her body, though from what they could see- she was emitting a toxic-looking, purple slime.

“Aizawa! Come look at the penguins!” Hizashi yelled, as his coworker tiredly walked toward him, “they’re adorable!”

“Yamada, you almost have me convinced Nedzu approved this trip for you and not for the kids,” he smirked.

“No harm enjoying yourself, Sho, you should try it sometime,” he sarcastically responded- a smirk lining his lips too. He watched as the students formed a crowded group around the penguin enclosure, smiles and awe-filled eyes everywhere.

Present Mic took a step back, gesturing for the students to cover their ears discreetly, then- he let out a yell, “Yeahhhhh!” The villain which had the strength-altering quirk was quickly taken aback- his body slamming on the wall behind them; a large indent now in his place.

Eraser also jumped into action, his quirk activating as he stared at the thug with extended limbs- his limbs shrunk back to a normal size as he struggled against the invisible restraints of erasure. After the villain realised his quirk vanished, he was no use, so relented to Eraser’s capture weapon- allowing himself to be knocked out against the wall- quickly getting tied up by the students of 1A.

“Let’s goooo!!” Another yell left Mic’s mouth as he aimed it toward the shark-like villain. The shark had attempted to run at Mic, teeth bloodied and feral eyes greeting him; until the villain flew back toward the wall- also leaving an indent. Last to be taken down was the girl emitting some type of gas.

The gas began to fill the cramped street in which they were fighting, and Erasure noticed this quickly, “kids, cover your mouths and noses! Quick!” He covered his own mouth and nose with his capture weapon, as he let the other end of the weapon find its way through the thick gas toward the girl. Present Mic was rendered useless by the quirk- unable to use his voice, the main weapon he had.

Erasure’s scarf wrapped around something in the thick mist and dragged it down- a thud and a groan being heard, before the gas began to clear up, loud splutters now being released from himself and his students. The woman had been knocked unconscious by his shot in the dark, complete luck taking down the full group of villains.

“Is everyone ok?” He asked his class, being met with nods and splutters- the gas just catching on their breath slightly- nothing to be too worried about. He noticed however no response came from Hizashi. He span round quickly to see his husband looking confused, “are you ok?”

’I think I knocked my own hearing aids out’ Hizashi signed, a laugh emerging him. A chuckle then escaped Shouta- more relief that his husband was ok.

He had the privilege of being able to protect his class, his family, his husband- he had a family at UA, and he was looking at them- protection and safety had never been so close before.

+1)

Mic and Eraser had been out on patrol together when the villain attacked- he was a Grade A villain, with a personal vendetta against the pair- they’d taken down a street drug gang as part of a wider operation, which unfortunately included this villain’s brother. He wanted revenge for his jailed brother, he personally demanded his ‘legacy protected’. Mic sighed as he continued his long speech about ‘legacy and blood’, how did they always get stuck with the weird villains?

Though, they soon learned how overpowered this villain was- he was on multiple quirk-enhancing drugs, obviously provided by the gang- but rumoured to be gone in Japan. His quirk was a powerful one anyway, but to be enhanced by so many drugs was unnerving, as Mic watched the villain easily take down entire buildings, if he continued this path of destruction- half the city would be levelled before he could be stopped. So, he and Eraser stepped in to try and minimise or stop the destruction before backup heroes arrived to help.

The building they were currently stood next to was teetering dangerously on it foundations- as the villain continued to resist Eraser’s and Mic’s attempts at capture. His large, black eyes concentrating on the pair- before large tentacles shot through rubble and buildings to try and land hits on them. The villain had some kind of squid quirk, but the tentacles had been enhanced to a ridiculous size- and they could travel immensely fast and over a far distance.

”Squid?! Yeah! Come get it!” Multiple yells escaped Mic as he pushed back tentacle after tentacle with his voice. Eraser focused on erasing some of the tentacles with his glare- capture weapon emerging around some of them too, cutting off blood supply.

“Scared?!” Yell after yell came and went, Mic not resting until all the tentacles had disappeared. Through his distraction, however, he hadn’t noticed some of the teetering building had began to crumble above them both. A piece of rubble landed dangerously close- which snapped him out of a concentrated trance.

“Shit, Eraser!” He noticed a large piece of rubble fall- almost directly above where Eraser stood, laser-focused on the villain ahead- his gaze unwavering. Mic broke out into a sprint however, dodging pieces of rubble, and managed to push Eraser out of the way of the falling piece just in time. Unfortunately, he was out of time to escape himself.

Once Eraser regained his balance, he came running back to Mic Hizashi- his Hizashi- as he watched his husband get thrown to the floor by the falling building. His vision tunnelled and his ears rang as he dropped to his knees beside Hizashi, only the top half of his husband currently visible.

“You’re safe…” Hizashi breathed out, clearly a strain on his currently crushed body, “I’m… glad, love…” every breath sounded like a struggle. However, Shouta couldn’t hear what Hizashi was trying to say next as he was dragged forcefully away from the scene by another pair of arms. He thrashed against the restraint- trying everything to get back to his beloved husband- yet the restraint was forceful, and he couldn’t resist.

“Yamada!” Shouta found himself trying to run back toward the scene, but another pro held him steady.

“The building’s unstable!” He heard the other pro explain, yet his ears rung- he could only focus on Hizashi, his only love, now trapped and alone.

“My… Present Mic is in there!” Shouta tried to explain, sounding more out of breath than he thought- though he also felt his cheeks become wet, he could probably link the two together.

“The villain’s being restrained as we speak, then we can go back for Present Mic!” The other hero tried to comfort Shouta, but it wasn’t working- ragged breaths wracked his body as ambulances arrived on scene, with police reinforcements not far behind. He watched tentatively as each paramedic and stretcher went back- hoping for a glimpse of Hizashi.

A few minutes later, Shouta saw the unmistakable golden hair of his husband being taken on a stretcher into one of the nearby ambulances. He chased the stretcher and caught the ambulance door before it shut- showing his hero license to ride with his beloved.

Once inside, he really took a good look at the injuries on Hizashi: his legs looked too mangled; his neck was bruised and bloody; his glasses were smashed against his face and cuts littered his body. He had thrown himself into falling rubble for Shouta- he protected him, but at the potential cost of his life…

Hours later

After five agonising hours in the nearby hospital, with visits from Eri, Shinsou, Nemuri and- most importantly- Recovery Girl, Hizashi began to wake up. He stirred as the golden glow of the sunset poured in through his hospital room window. His eyes flicked open and he glanced around hastily- the sight he saw before him a welcome sight.

Shouta was asleep in a hospital chair next to his bedside- but he was joined by another chair, Hitoshi asleep on this one, with his head resting deep into Shouta’s shoulder. Hizashi then glanced toward the hospital room couch- where he saw Eri and Nemuri lying, both sound asleep, cuddled up to each other as well.

“Shou…” he managed to mutter, though it burned his throat. However, it made Shouta shoot up immediately- his eyes darting around before finally landing on Hizashi.

“Zashi…? Zashi, you’re awake…!” He exclaimed, still weary of his volume due to a sleeping Hitoshi, “I thought I was going to lose you…”

“Songbird, I’m tougher than that,” he smiled at his husband and son cuddled up together, “you’re adorable.”

“Why would you ever do that? Risk your life to save me? I couldn’t live in a world without you, lovely,” Shouta began to explain.

“Because I needed to protect you… I couldn’t live in a world without you either.”

”I’m going to say more about this later… but I’m just glad you’re alive,” Shouta’s head nuzzled into Hizashi’s body as they both fell into a now-peaceful sleep.

When it came to protecting their family and each other, they were experts. Love-filled experts, who cared about each other’s safety plenty more than their own.
