Work Text:

Vee stood at the front door of Masha’s place. Her stomach filled with butterflies. Feeling like she could collapse any minute, with their heartbeat racing like she ran a marathon. They look around. Examining the front of the house. With a small ring doorbell to the right of the door, a metal door latch, a small semicircle of a window at the top of the door that's warped and hard to look through. Then she looks at the little flower bed that’s in front of the porch. She plucks a pretty, indigo balloon flower. They grasp the bottom of the stem then knock on the door, holding her left hand with her right with the flower sticking out the middle. The few actual minutes Vee was standing there felt like hours to her, like time stopped and she was still conscious, until the door opens to reveal Masha in black jeans with a purple belt, white button up shirt with a bright yellow tie. Vee stands there with widen eyes, taking in the sight of Masha.

“Is it too much? It’s really all I have that looks date worthy, I could go cha-”

“No no, I think it looks great! Uhm, here’s a flower.”

Vee says this as she pushes the flower as far away as she could from her body with a soft smile on her face.

“Thanks.”

They recognize the type of flower as one of the few flowers that their mom grows. They look over at the flower bed, then back to the flower.

“You plucked this from our flower bed didn’t you?”

The smile quickly vanished from Vee’s face as fear encompass her whole face

“I-I’m sorry I just thoug-”

“No, it’s okay! I don’t really like the flowers my mom grows but…”

They walk up to Vee, their cheeks nearly touching each other, causing Vee to blush. Masha puts the flower in between Vee’s hair just above her ear. They take a step back to admire Vee, her wearing a muddy brown sweater with a small muddy pink skirt with black leggings under it and a small backpack purse slung on one arm, all of this highlighted with the orange sky slowly dropping over the houses, taking the sun with it.

“It looks good on you.”

Vee blushes more than they already were.

“T-thanks.”

“So uh, ready and stuff?”

Masha says this as they reach out their hand as an offer to take Vee's, having a slight smile on their face. Vee happily accepts, taking their hand and responds.

“Yes.”

After they got to the small ma and pa restaurant that they agreed on going too and setting their orders. They both got to asking questions and chatting around a bit.

“so how's your family like”

“They're alright, mom and dad work for this company about stocks or whatever. I don't really pay attention to their conversations about it. The rest is basically just The Union versus The Confederacy.”

“Oh, that must suck.”

“It does yeah, really gotta remember what people will throw bible verses at me when gotten the chance.”

Masha said this with a smirk while leaning back into their seat and taking a sip of their water. They then lean forwards, putting their drink on the table.

“What's your family like?”

“I, I don't really know a whole lot. Besides my mom and my sister, they're really the only family I have.”

“I'm sure there's gotta be a grandparent still kickin around.”

“There is but. I haven't, I...”

Vee looks down at her hands in her lap. They start to fidget with their hands with a sad look on their face.

“You alright?”

“Yeah it's just, I'm… adopted. Besides my mom and sister, I don't really have family…”

“Oh…”

They both sit together in awkward silence for a bit, both wanting to move into a new topic but not really knowing how to. Both Masha and Vee hoping that it wouldn't end up like the family question. The silence is broken by the waiter bringing their food.

“Breakfast meal for the one in the sweater and burger meal for the one in the tie. Hope you enjoy it! Also, do any of you need a refill on water?”

“No thanks and thank you.”

“No, thank you.”

The waiter nodded with a smile on his face then walked away to carry food for some more people.

“Looks delicious.”

“It is, that’s why I love this place. It never fails to amaze me.”

“Even when you're playing it safe with a burger?”

“Says you.”

Vee chuckles as she grabs the bundle of utensils inside a napkin and takes out the fork and starts to dig into her eggs. While Masha grabs the ketchup bottle and dumps a bit of ketchup on their plate for the fries.

“Soooo uh, anything interesting planned for after graduation?”

“Nothing too much, I may be a veterinarian like my mom. You?”

“I'm just, gonna go where the wind takes me y'know?”

Masha says this with a hint of hesitation but Vee doesn't notice.

“Yeah.”

They both eat together in silence, enjoying their meals. Both simple but good. As Masha finishes about half of their fries and a quarter of their burger, they look up at Vee, who has finished her eggs and moved on to the hashbrowns. They just look at her. Taking in the sight of how beautiful she looks and how they actually are on a date with them.

“Don't mess this up Mash. You got this. Just a date with one of the cutest girls you've ever seen. It's nothing. Why does she have the right to be so goddamn cute? I mean I'm not complaining but, just wow. She deserves more. I mean look at me. This tooth gap that that makes me not able to pronounce my s and z's. I'm too overdressed while she's just the right amount of dressed. Just be cool, be someone who she'll like, someone who she'll find cool and stuff. just be cool, just be cool, jus-’

“Hey Masha you alright? You've been staring at me for a bit.”

“Huh oh, I'm just taking in and admiring your beauty.”

Masha leans in and rests their head on her palm as they say this, with a smirk. Making Vee lean back into her seat while her cheeks are turning a bright red.

“R-really?”

“Yeah.”

“T-thanks”

“No problem cutie”

Masha boops Vee's nose as they say this, causing Vee to be flustered and shrinks away shyly with a shy smile on their face. Masha takes their head off their hand and triumphantly eats, knowing that they made Vee flustered, which is not a big deal, and still keeping on the “cool persona” mask, which is a big deal. After a while they both finish their food, paid their bill and were walking to Masha’s place since their place was on Vee’s way home. The sky was almost dark, the sky in a deep muted blue with tiny white specks that were stars starting to appear, the hint of orange in the west horizon, the smell of autumn leaves and the wind. The hottest person Vee has ever seen to the left of her, and the prettiest girl Masha has ever seen to the right of them.

“My house is just a few more down.”

Masha says this as they point ahead. Vee sighs while saying

“It sucks that this had to end. I had a real fun time too!”

“Weelllll. It doesn't have to end just yet.”

“What do you mean?”

“What I mean is that I could sneak you over.”

“What about your parents?! A-and the ring doorbell?!”

“Relax, they're both on a business trip a few states over, they'll be home next week. And we're gonna have to hop a rando's fence to get to the outskirts of the forest to avoid the camera. You down?”

“Y-yeah, I'm down.”

Masha releases a smirk when Vee says this and quickly takes Vee’s hand and quickly guides her to a random lawn. They hop the gate and quickly but carefully guide Vee over it, they make it to the backyard and Masha kneels as they put one hand on their knee to boost Vee over the fence. Right as Vee is about to make it over they hear a voice from a man.

“Hey! What are you two doing!?”

“Shit…”

Masha says this under their breath as they push Vee’s foot up hard and fast, causing them to fall on the other side. Masha quickly sprints towards the gate and hops it with ease and sprints off in the distance towards their house with the man running and yelling behind them something about cops. Right when they make it to their home they slow down and try to control their breathing, trying to make it look and sound like they haven't been sprinting. They walk inside, quickly making their way to the backyard, hopping the fence with some difficulty due to the jeans. They spot Vee and she runs towards them with a scared look. Masha recognizes this and quickly kneels to give Vee a boost. She hops back over the fence with Masha quickly following and when Masha drops down Vee jumps at Masha, embracing herself within them.

“Oh my god that was so scary, I thought I was going to go to jail and I would be locked up and, and-”

“Hey, hey, it's okay. We got caught yes but both of us got away. We're fine.”

Masha pets Vee's head while they say this, Vee feeling relieved but still worried. They both stay there like this for a moment. Just taking in the feeling of holding each other and processing them almost getting arrested. But it's nice. It's really nice. Until the cold sharp bite that is the autumn wind waking Masha and Vee.

“We should probably head inside.”

“Yeah…”

Vee lets go of Masha while they try to grab Vee's hand to try to help relieve any stress from what happened moments prior. They both walk inside and head to Masha’s bedroom with them saying on the way,

“There's this one thing that I want to show you, I love it a lot and I hope you do too.”

“W-well whatever you love I'll love too.”

Vee said this quietly but it was still auditable to Masha. Masha blushes slightly from this, but they keep looking forward to hide it. They both reach Masha’s room. It's filled wall to wall in band posters like Nirvana, Slipknot, Alice In Chains, Rage Against The Machine and SOAD. There's their bed snuggled tight in the corner or their room. Looking like it hasn't moved an inch when it was first put there. With a non-binary flag attached to the slanted roof. They walk up to their window, unlike the roof, it's parallel to the wall. They open the window and motion for Vee to follow them. The sky is completely dark now. What was left of the orange line in the west horizon is now replaced with the darkness of the night sky. Stars start to encompass the sky with a full moon replacing the sun. Masha leans back with their right hand supporting them, their foot flat on the roof and their left arm resting on the top of their knee cap. Vee follows them with hugging their knees to her chest, sitting really close to Masha.

“Beauty ain't it? I come up here to clear my mind or to simply just take it all in.”

“Yeah, what type of things would a cool person like you be clearing their mind of? What cool car to get?”

Vee says this in a teasing, their head tilted as they face Masha with a grin on her face. Masha realizes that they're mask is starting to crack. Already there is a little chunk that has been taken out. Instead of trying to mend it. They decide to put their faith into Vee.

“Heh, well that'd certainly be one of them, but, can I be honest with you?”

“Of course you can.”

Vee puts a hand on the arm that's been resting on Masha's knee cap with a slightly concerned face.

“It's just. I, I… It's hard to keep a mask on that can be so fragile. It's sometimes mentally draining to keep a cool persona on. In reality, I'm just a nerd that's really into history, and honestly. I'm scared of the future. Everyone I know has some life they want or at least a career in mind for them. But I don't. Like I know what I'm supposed to do, get a job, get a place, all that jazz. But for what I want to do. I don't know, and I'm scared because of that.”

Masha goes into the same position as Vee when they say this. Vee looks at them with a sorry look. She puts her arm around Masha, with them looking up at her. She says

“Well, will I make the future less scary?”

“Yeah. A lot less scary.”

Masha says this as they rest their head on Vee's shoulder. A sense of security starts to fill their mind. Maybe the future isn't that scary as they think it'll be.
