rebecca i could really use some help at the checkout

Summary:

Rebecca's favourite shoplifter has come in again, but this time isn't interested in theft - she'd like to know where the t-shirts are, thank you very much.

Work Text:

Kennedy doesn’t steal anything today, which is odd.
Instead, she beelines straight for Rebecca’s till.
“Hey, Rebecca,” she says. “I don’t suppose you could help me find the t-shirts?”
The clothing department is fairly visible, but Rebecca doesn’t point that out.

Instead, she leads Kennedy to the location in question—and if she’s walking slower than normal, that’s no one else’s business.
“So, tell me about your day,” says Kennedy. “How’s it been so far?”
“Oh, the usual,” Rebecca replies.
“Come on,” pleads Kennedy. “I know you have more for me than ‘the usual.’ You’ve got a lot to say and I know it.”
“Well,” says Rebecca before she can think too hard about it, “it’s better now that you’re here.”

This silences Kennedy for a moment. Then she makes a pleased noise. “Any other interesting customers? Though I know they must pale in comparison.”
“Though I haven’t seen him in a bit, I guess there’s this one guy. Every time he comes in, he buys one throw pillow and nothing else.”
Kennedy lets out a laugh. “Wait, really? That’s so weird. I want to meet this guy. How many times has he done it?”
Rebecca thinks back. “At least five. What do you think he’s using them for?”

Their conversation continues until Rebecca earns a glare from her manager, at which point she brings Kennedy to the checkout and rings through the two t-shirts she’s decided on.

“Since you’re here so often,” says Rebecca, “I could text you a friend discount code, if I had your number?”
“You want my number?” asks Kennedy.
“Just to give you the discount,” says Rebecca.
“Just to give me the discount,” echoes Kennedy in a tone Rebecca can’t place.
She obliges, though, and Rebecca tries to ignore the buzz in her chest thereafter.
