Work Text:
Bonnie woke up in Enzo's bedroom in his cabin. She cursed at herself when the first thing she felt was thirst. Perhaps they might go a bit easier on the cozy fires.
It took some convincing, but eventually, she put on her slippers and opened the door as quietly as she could, trying not to wake Enzo up.
Speaking of which.
Her gaze landed on the sleeping vampire almost immediately, sensing something wrong.
Bonnie took a tentative step closer and heard a soft choked whimper followed by a “please-”
Bonnie took another step closer and saw tears running down Enzo's face.
“Enzo?” She tried to wake him, calm him, anything from a safe distance. “Enzo.” She raised her voice but to no avail.
It took another step closer and a hand on his shoulder. Once Enzo’s body trashed and moved away from the touch, Bonnie's hand connected with the hot skin of his neck, plaguing Bonnie’s mind with images he never wished to see.
Bonnie knew about Enzo's history from what little Damon shared. She had the general idea and she would have liked for it to stay that way. Unfortunately with Enzo's guard down from sleep, her mind was filled with vivid visions of scientists, scalpels, needles, knives, and oh, so much pain.
Bonnie's eyes opened, the connection broke, and Enzo's eyes snapped open. With one swift movement, he pushed Bonnie onto the floor, baring his canines at her, his eyes turning black.
“It's me!” Bonnie raised her hands in surrender. “It's Bonnie!”
Enzo's eyes cleared, his mouth shut with an audible ‘clap’, throwing himself against the nearest wall.
Bonnie watched in horror as the vampire’s whole body started shaking. Enzo tried to hide behind his knees, clenching his fists and pulling at his hair.
“Enzo?” Bonnie called as softly as she could, crawling to him on all fours.
“I'm sorry.” She heard a whisper when she pried his hands from his hair, placing them in her lap and giving them a gentle squeeze. “You're safe.” She assured him. “You're okay.”
“I'm so sorry.” Enzo tried to pull his hands from her, but Bonnie didn't allow him to shut her out. “Enzo, look at me.” She gave his hands one more squeeze before placing her fingers under his chin, guiding his gaze to meet hers.
“I’m sorry.”
Bonnie shushed him. Then without a word guided him into a hug. “Sleep now, everything will be alright, okay?”
Enzo, who, to his own surprise, allowed Bonnie to guide him, nodded and closed his eyes, falling asleep on the floor with his head in Bonnie's lap, allowing the witch to watch over him just for that night.
