Work Text:

It was a crisp late afternoon at Jujutsu High, and the fading sunlight filtered through the trees, casting long shadows over the training grounds. Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro were deep into their sparring session, their focus sharp, though each had a different energy about them. Yuji moved with his usual electric excitement, his punches swift and powerful, while Fushiguro, calm and collected, anticipated every move with calculated precision.

The sound of fists meeting the air and the occasional grunt echoed across the otherwise quiet space. Yuji admired how cool Fushiguro always looked when they trained together, never breaking his stoic mask, even when Yuji knew he was giving it everything he had. That quiet strength drew Yuji to him in a way he hadn’t quite been able to explain. He didn’t want to admit it, but the more they trained, the more Yuji found himself watching Fushiguro when they weren’t even sparring—his sharp blue eyes, the way his hair fell just so when he dodged a punch, how his expression barely changed even when Yuji landed a blow.

After an hour of relentless back-and-forth, Gojo, who had been supervising with his usual nonchalance, decided to call it a day, leaving the two boys alone to finish up. As the sparring wound down, Yuji wiped the sweat from his brow, still catching his breath but unable to stop the grin that tugged at the corners of his mouth.

"You’re getting even faster, Fushiguro," Yuji praised, his breath coming in soft pants. "I almost didn’t see that last block."

Fushiguro merely shrugged, as usual not letting praise get to him. He rolled his shoulder, stretching out a sore muscle. "You're still wide open when you come in from the left. You need to work on that."

Yuji chuckled, ruffling his hair with one hand. "Yeah, yeah. I'll keep that in mind."

A comfortable silence settled between them as they gathered their things, but Yuji couldn’t shake the nervous energy building inside him. This wasn’t just any sparring session for him. He had been thinking about something—someone—for weeks, and now he couldn’t keep his feelings bottled up anymore. He had made a decision. He was going to tell Fushiguro how he really felt.

It wasn’t like him to hesitate, but there was something about this that made his heart race, even more than fighting cursed spirits. Yuji wasn’t nervous about getting hurt in battle, but this—confessing his feelings to Fushiguro—felt like a whole different kind of risk. And yet, he knew he had to do it.

Just as Fushiguro was turning to leave, Yuji called out to him. His voice came out a little louder than expected, startling them both. "Hey, Fushiguro!"

Fushiguro stopped and looked over his shoulder, one eyebrow raised. "What is it?"

Yuji swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest. He scratched the back of his neck, a nervous habit that had gotten worse in the last few days as he’d thought about what he was about to do. "Can you… can you meet me tomorrow? At noon. Under the cherry blossom tree near the school?"

Fushiguro’s eyes narrowed slightly, as if trying to figure out what Yuji was up to. It wasn’t like Yuji to be so cryptic. “Why there? Why noon?”

Yuji’s mouth felt dry as he shrugged, trying to play it off casually. "I just… have something I want to talk to you about. It'll make sense tomorrow, I promise."

Fushiguro didn’t respond right away, his expression unreadable, but after a few moments, he gave a small nod. “Alright. Noon under the cherry blossoms.”

Yuji felt a rush of relief flood through him, though his nerves were still dancing around inside. "Cool. Thanks, Fushiguro."

With a brief nod, Fushiguro turned and left, his usual calm stride unhurried. As soon as he was out of sight, Yuji let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. He felt the tension drain from his shoulders, though his heart continued to pound in his chest. Tomorrow… tomorrow was going to change everything. Whether for better or worse, Yuji wasn’t sure, but he was determined to tell Fushiguro how he felt

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That night, Yuji couldn’t stop thinking about the next day. He sat on his bed, staring at the two gifts he had prepared for Fushiguro. One was a box of chocolates—nothing too fancy, but they were the ones Fushiguro liked. Yuji had noticed him picking them out during their last grocery run together, so he’d gone out of his way to find them again. The second gift was a small bouquet of flowers, carefully picked from the school’s garden. Yuji had done his research, making sure they were Fushiguro’s favorites—simple, not too extravagant, just like him.

As he stared at the gifts, doubt began to creep into his mind. Was this too much? Would Fushiguro even like flowers? He wasn’t the type to care about things like that, right? Yuji shook his head, trying to clear the doubts. This wasn’t about the gifts; it was about what they represented. It was about how much Fushiguro meant to him, how much he wanted to be with him, not just as friends, but as something more.

Yuji flopped back onto his bed, staring up at the ceiling. His thoughts were a whirlwind of emotions. What if Fushiguro didn’t feel the same way? What if this ruined their friendship? He could already imagine the awkward silence that would follow if Fushiguro rejected him, the way they’d try to pretend everything was fine even when it wasn’t.

But then Yuji thought about all the moments they’d shared—the quiet conversations, the unspoken understanding between them during battles, the way Fushiguro always seemed to watch out for him even when he didn’t have to. There was something there, Yuji was sure of it. He just had to take the leap and hope Fushiguro was willing to meet him halfway.

Yuji, laying in bed, gripping his pillow as his thoughts whirled. Tomorrow, he was going to ask Fushiguro on a date. Maybe an arcade and dinner? Something casual, fun, but meaningful—something that would allow them to relax and enjoy each other’s company outside of their usual responsibilities. He replayed the moments when they had gone to the arcade together, how Fushiguro had secretly enjoyed the games despite his aloof exterior. Yuji had always loved watching the subtle smile Fushiguro tried to hide when he won a game. Tomorrow would be perfect.

------------------------------------------

The next morning, Yuji woke up earlier than usual, the sun just starting to rise. He spent most of the morning pacing around his room, unable to sit still as the clock ticked closer to noon. He carefully made sure the chocolates and bouquet were still in perfect condition. As he ate breakfast, he noticed Fushiguro wasn’t there, assuming he had gone out for some early training. That was typical of him. By the time 11:30 rolled around, he had finally gathered the courage to leave his room, the chocolates and flowers carefully packed in a small bag slung over his shoulder.

Now with just half an hour left before their meeting time, Yuji gathered the gifts and stepped outside. The weather was perfect for his plan—the sun gently warming the air, and a slight breeze ruffling the leaves. Prior, while he was walking down the hallway, he passed Fushiguro’s room, noticing the door slightly ajar. Peeking in, he saw it was empty, which confirmed his earlier assumption that Fushiguro was probably training.

The walk to the cherry blossom tree felt both too fast and too slow at the same time. His heart raced with every step, his mind replaying all the things he wanted to say. He arrived a little early, finding the tree in full bloom, its delicate pink petals swaying gently in the breeze. The sight of it calmed him, if only for a moment. He had chosen this spot for a reason—it was peaceful, beautiful, and it held a special meaning for both of them. It was where they often trained or took breaks between missions, the quiet sanctuary away from the chaos of their lives as Jujutsu sorcerers.

Yuji stood under the tree, adjusting the flowers nervously as he waited. His thoughts spiraled, each one faster than the last. What if Fushiguro didn’t come? What if—

Before he could sink further into his worries, he heard the sound of approaching footsteps. He turned and saw Fushiguro walking toward him, his usual calm expression in place, though there was a slight furrow in his brow. Yuji’s heart skipped a beat as their eyes met, and for a moment, he felt frozen in place.

Fushiguro stopped a few feet away, his hands casually stuffed in his pockets. “You’re early.”

Yuji laughed, though it came out a little shaky. “Yeah, I guess I was just… excited.”

Fushiguro glanced at the bag in Yuji’s hand, his gaze flicking back to Yuji’s face with a hint of curiosity. “So, what did you want to talk about?”

Yuji felt his stomach twist with nerves, but he forced himself to take a deep breath. This was it. No turning back now.

He reached into the bag and pulled out the box of chocolates, holding it out to Fushiguro with a sheepish smile. “These are for you. I remembered you liked them, so… I got some.”

Fushiguro blinked, clearly surprised, though he accepted the chocolates without a word. His expression remained neutral, but Yuji could see the faintest flicker of something in his eyes—confusion, maybe? Curiosity? He wasn’t sure.

“And…” Yuji pulled out the bouquet of flowers, feeling even more awkward as he handed them to Fushiguro. “These, too. I, uh… picked them myself.”

Fushiguro stared at the flowers for a long moment, his brow furrowing even more as he took them from Yuji’s outstretched hand. For a second, Yuji thought he might have overdone it, but then Fushiguro’s gaze softened ever so slightly. He didn’t say anything right away, though, and the silence between them grew heavy.

Yuji shifted nervously, rubbing the back of his neck again. “I know this is probably weird for you. I mean, you’re not really the flowers-and-chocolates type, but… I just wanted to do something nice.”

Fushiguro’s lips twitched into what might have been the beginning of a smile, though it was gone before Yuji could be sure. “You didn’t have to go through all that trouble.”

“I know,” Yuji said quickly, his heart pounding. “I wanted to. Because… well, there’s something I need to tell you.”

Fushiguro’s expression shifted slightly, his usual guarded look giving way to something more open, though his eyes were still wary. “Go on.”

Yuji took a deep breath, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides as he tried to find the right words. His thoughts were racing, but somehow, they all came together in that moment, as if everything had been leading up to this.

“Fushiguro,” Yuji began, his voice low but steady, “I like you. Not just as a friend, best friend, or a teammate, or whatever we are. I… I like you. More than that.”

For a moment, Fushiguro didn’t move. He didn’t speak, didn’t even blink. The world seemed to stand still around them, the soft rustling of the cherry blossom petals the only sound in the air.

Yuji’s heart pounded in his chest, the silence stretching on for what felt like an eternity. Had he said too much? Did he—

“I know.”

Fushiguro’s voice broke through the tension like a knife, soft but sure. Yuji blinked in surprise, his breath catching in his throat. “You… you do?”

Fushiguro nodded, his gaze dropping to the flowers in his hand before returning to Yuji’s face. His cheeks were faintly pink, though his expression remained calm. “I’m not an idiot, Itadori. I’ve known for a while.”

Yuji’s eyes widened. “Then why didn’t you—”

“Because I wasn’t sure how to respond,” Fushiguro cut in, his tone blunt but not unkind. He shifted slightly, his fingers tightening around the stems of the flowers. “I didn’t know if I felt the same way. But…” He hesitated, his gaze flickering to the ground for a brief moment before he met Yuji’s eyes again. “I do.”

Yuji felt his heart leap into his throat, a wave of relief washing over him. “You do?”

Fushiguro gave a small nod, though his blush deepened as he muttered, “Yeah. But if you tell anyone, I’ll kill you.”

Yuji couldn’t help but laugh, the tension finally breaking as he let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. He grinned, the weight of his confession lifting off his shoulders as he stepped closer to Fushiguro, his hand brushing against the other boy’s.

“I won’t tell anyone,” Yuji promised, his voice soft. “It’ll just be between us.”

“But my question has always been.. why do you… why do you want to go out with me?” Fushiguro asked, his usual calm exterior cracking just slightly. His eyes flickered away from Yuji’s, as if he were trying to hide the vulnerable look in them.

“Because… I admire you. I’ve always admired you. You’re strong, and smart, and… honestly, you’re the most handsome guy I’ve ever met.”

Fushiguro flushed at the compliment. “I really like being around you,” Yuji continued, his voice soft but steady. “And I was hoping… maybe we could be more than just friends.”

Fushiguro took a deep breath. "I... I think I'd like that." He glanced down at their hands, his fingers twitching slightly before he hesitantly took Yuji’s hand in his own. His grip was firm but gentle, and though his face was still a little red, he didn’t pull away.

Yuji’s heart swelled with warmth as he squeezed Fushiguro’s hand, his smile widening. He couldn’t believe it—Fushiguro felt the same way. All the worry, all the fear, it had all been worth it for this moment.

The two of them stood there under the cherry blossom tree, the soft petals falling around them like snow. It was quiet, peaceful, the world outside their little bubble fading away as they held onto each other. Neither of them said anything, but they didn’t need to. The warmth of Fushiguro’s hand in his own was enough.

And for the first time in a long while, Yuji felt like everything was going to be okay.
