Work Text:
He can’t sleep. They’ve been planning this for months. He and Link have been talking about and working on Wonderhole for years. They’ve worked hard and put in a lot of time and money. But this part he may not be able to do.
Link had been the one to talk him into it, of course. He and Link talk each other into everything. Usually, it’s Rhett talking Link into stuff. But not this time. He’s spent days reminding himself that they’re going to be safe, thousands of people do this every year, and nothing bad is going to happen. But fear is fear and he’s always been afraid of heights. It’s been a long time since he’s done something that scared him as much as this.
Because of their early morning, Rhett and Link had elected to sleep at the creative house. They went to bed pretty early, but Rhett hasn’t gotten a second of sleep. When Link gets up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, Rhett rolls over to check the time. Link lays back down and he sets down his phone, turning to his back.
Just as he thinks Link has fallen back asleep, the man mumbles, “You not able to sleep?”
“No,” Rhett sighs.
Link scoots closer and rests a hand on his arm, thumb moving in circles. “The forecast for tomorrow is perfect. It’s gonna be great. I can go first, if you want.”
“They’ll probably decide who goes first.” He feels Link shrug. “I’ve reasoned through it all so many times. I know it’s gonna be fine.”
“Easier said than done?” Link asks.
“Easier said than done,” Rhett echos.
They lay there in silence for a few minutes, a little bit of Rhett’s fear melting with the motion of Link’s thumb on his skin. It starts to lull him to sleep.
“Think about your younger self,” Link says, “He’d be so excited for you to skydive, wouldn’t he?”
Rhett laughs, “He’d probably tell me not to do it. He’d think I’m going to die. Believe it or not, I used to be more afraid of heights.”
Link chuckles, “Think about younger me, then. He’d be pretty amazed that we’re going skydiving together. And impressed that you’re doing it even though you’re afraid.”
Turning to look at him with a small smile on his face, Rhett says, “I think there’s a part of me that has always liked impressing you.”
Link grins, “I know. You still love doing it. And you impress me all the time.”
“You impress me too.” Rhett places a hand on top of Link’s, drawing a thumb over his knuckles. His gaze travels over the shadowed form of his best friend, hair messy from sleep, sharp shoulder, the sheet pulled halfway up his torso.
“I know the episode focuses on drinking the cloud, but I always wanted to sleep on a cloud,” Link says.
“I’d sleep with you on a cloud,” Rhett says, letting go of adult logic and reason in favor of unrealistic childish dreams.
“Would you sleep with me or…” Link raises his eyebrows, “Sleep with me?”
The bigger man laughs, “Probably both. Though we’d have to make sure there’s no way to fall off.”
Link moves closer again, hand moving to Rhett’s bare chest, “Things do tend to get a little wild sometimes, don’t they?”
Rhett chuckles, memories flashing through his mind, “Makin’ love in a cloud.”
“X rated Wonderhole,” Link says, kissing his shoulder.
“It’s what the people want!”
Link grins and kisses his shoulder a few more times, “I actually think less people talk about us being together now.”
“Old news,” Rhett says, “Someone would definitely say something if they looked up and saw us fucking in a cloud, though.”
“But you can’t see through a cloud,” Link points out, placing his leg over one of Rhett’s and pulling them closer together.
“Well, then someone in a plane,” Rhett says, tilting his head back as Link’s kisses to his shoulder start traveling up his neck.
“Come on, you know us, we’d film it. If we figured out how to make love in a cloud, we’d have to film it,” Link says.
“You’re right, you’re right,” Rhett says before submitting to Link’s kiss to his lips.
After a moment, Link pulls back and asks, “You still need to be distracted from what we’re doing tomorrow?”
“You distracted me pretty well,” Rhett says, stealing another kiss.
Link pushes down the sheets and straddles his hips, leaning down to kiss him again. Rhett’s hands automatically find his ass. “You’re supposed to say no so that I can distract you another way,” he whispers.
Running a hand up his back, Rhett laughs softly, “Alright, then. You didn’t distract me at all.”
With a grin, Link gets back to kissing him, hands finding their way around each other’s bodies.
“What would our younger selves think of this?” Link asks, lips against Rhett’s shoulder.
“They’d probably be confused,” Rhett says, distracted by Link’s mouth on his skin, “But I think they’d know deep down that we’d end up like this eventually.”
“I don’t know about alla that for young Link,” he says, “But I think he’d be glad to know he’s still got you.”
Noses almost touching, they look into each other’s eyes the best they can in the dark. Rhett whispers, “You have me one way or another in every universe.”
Link grins, kisses him, and whispers back, “I know, bo.”
Smiles on their lips, they kiss until they have to breathe, movements suddenly tinged in desperation. For a moment, Rhett imagines that all of his worst fears do play out tomorrow and this is the last time he gets to have Link like this. Nails digging into Link’s back just a little, Rhett kisses him like it’s the last time.
After a while, Link breaks free of his lips and moves down his chest, hands following his mouth. “Now,” he says, “Lay back and relax and pretend we’re on a cloud and I’m going to make you cum so hard that you fall asleep in seconds. Gotta have some sleep before tomorrow.”
Rhett laughs, threading his fingers into his lover’s hair, “Sounds like a deal.”
