The Painful Process of Asking Out The Girl You Like (PJ Edition)

Summary:

PJ snapped her head over towards Josie with wide eyes full of stress. “Yeah, that’s right, I have to ask her, I have to ask Hazel Callahan, the girl I’ve been the biggest dick to for years, on a date. Josie I literally treated her like garbage for as long as we’ve known her!”

“And you apologized, besides we’ve already established all of your dick behavior was disguised attraction.” Josie insisted simply.

“But Hazel doesn’t know that!” PJ snapped as she continued to pace. “I already completely blew it with Britanny, I don’t want to blow it with Hazel too.”

Josie rolled her eyes. “This is not the same thing at all. Brittany was straight, of course it didn’t work out. Hazel is…” She paused, eyebrows furrowing. “Hazel’s a lesbian, right?”

“Josie, she has a wolfcut and mommy issues, she’s definitely a lesbian.” PJ said like it was obvious.

OR: It's 3 months after the football game incident and surprise, surprise, PJ still can't flirt.

“I don’t know what you’re freaking out about,” Josie started dryly as she watched PJ frantically pace around her room like a mad woman. “All you have to do is ask her.”

“Now be serious. Is this outfit hot enough?” She posed.

PJ was wearing a blank tank top, far too many necklaces, along with some suspenders and ripped jeans.

“I don’t know, it looks the same as most of your outfits.” Josie huffed. “It’s Hazel, is she really gonna care what you’re wearing?”

“No, but a good shot of my boobs might give me an advantage.” PJ huffed, trying to readjust her breasts in her top to make them look pushed up more.

Josie sighed heavily. Honestly, she just wanted PJ to ask Hazel out already. It had been three months since the insane football incident, and also three months since PJ and Hazel’s intense make-out that left them both acting like bumbling idiots.

Don’t get her wrong. For the first month, Josie really felt for PJ. She did. Genuinely.

But this was Hazel. She followed them around like a duckling or a lost puppy when they were mean to her, now that they were actually nice to her?

There was no chance she was actually going to reject PJ, Josie was certain of it.

“Shit, maybe I need more lip gloss.” PJ fretted as she glanced in the mirror, hurrying to grab the lip gloss from the desk.

Josie rammed her face into a pillow, putting all of her hopes and prayers into Hazel saying yes today.

The duo headed into the gym for fight club just in time to see Hazel pin Sylvie to the ground with relative ease, letting out soft pants from exhaustion.

PJ sucked in a breath. “Fuuuuuck.” She muttered to Josie.

“Keep it in your vagina.” Josie hissed at her quietly.

Hazel noticed them soon enough and beamed, just as she did every time she saw them. “Hey guys!” While the others continued their practice, she ran over to them. “I made some adjustments to our training routine, since everyone’s been improving so much. I was thinking we’d start-“

As Hazel rambled on about her newest plans for the club, PJ couldn’t help staring like an idiot.

It was crazy. Sure, deep down she always noticed these things about Hazel, but she was so deep in denial that she never really got to enjoy it.

Now she noticed everything, happily. Hazel’s smile, the ways her eyes lit up with life when she was excited, the sweat dripping down her body from a harsh workout…

“So what do you think?” Hazel asked, looking at PJ expectantly.

PJ nearly did a double take. “I- yes, I-I love you- IT,” Her eyes widened in slight mortification as she rambled. “I love the idea, totally cool and chill, you uh, you’re really good at that whole, planning shit thing you do, really uh, top quality stuff.”

Josie was looking at her like PJ had personally offended her somehow, not that PJ could really blame her.

Even Hazel seemed a little confused and weirded out by PJ’s words. “…Um…thanks? I think?” She offered awkwardly, walking away to go talk to Stella-Rebecca.

The moment she walked away, Josie looked at PJ with pure judgement. “You have no idea what she just said, do you?”

“Not one word.” PJ confessed in an instant. “I’m not even entirely sure what I said, jesus christ did I really say ‘top quality stuff’?” She asked, cringing.

“Well, thanks to you we’re apparently introducing team spars.” Josie huffed, crossing her arms. “I was trying to explain that I didn’t know if we were ready, but then someone said it was a great idea.”

PJ paused. “…Oh.” She blinked. “Well too late to back out now. It’ll be fine, we’re the dream team, how bad could a double spar be?”

Just then, Hazel called over to them. “PJ, Josie, you’re with me and Isabel!” Isabel was already stretching, getting ready for the fight.

PJ and Josie stared over at them for a moment.

“We’re gonna die.” Josie noted.

“Oh definitely.” PJ nodded in agreement.

One painful double spar later, and the rest of fight club, and PJ found herself trying to hype herself up in the locker room shower.

It was just Hazel. She just needed to be calm, cool, and collected.

PJ wrapped a towel around herself and stepped out of the shower, only to be met with Hazel, who was already dressed and drying her hair with a towel. “Hazel!”

Hazel glanced at her in mild surprise. “Uh, hey PJ-“

“Listen, Hazel, Hazey, Haze, can I call you Haze?” PJ’s brain caught up and she shook her head rapidly. “Uh, actually no, that’s weird, that’s like saying I’m calling you confused, which you’re not, obviously, um…”

Hazel was looking at her with genuine worry. “Are you okay?”

Shit, she was blowing this.

“So I’m gonna like, say something crazy,” PJ started, clearing her throat awkwardly as she crossed her arms over her towel. “Uh, like, you and me, pretty uh, pretty good look, the two of us, together I me, we were a good distraction and stuff, best distraction ever, saved the school with our gayness, pretty dope.” PJ rambled painfully. With every word, Hazel was just looking more and more confused.

Josie, who was at her locker, watched them in genuine pain. Isabel, who stood next to her, leaned over curiously. “What’s wrong with her?” She asked.

“Don’t get me started.” Josie mumbled, unable to look away.

PJ let out a very awkward laugh. “Haha…wow, um, anyways, look at me, stood here in a towel, wow it’s getting cold in here, I should get dressed, but um, maybe after that…we could like…” She trailed off, as if praying Hazel would catch on.

But she didn’t, instead she continued to stare at PJ with wide eyes full of confusion.

“You know, me and you,” She gestured between them weirdly. “Like, maybe we go to a diner, get some food, eat it, and then like-“

“OH MY GOD, HAZEL SHE’S ASKING YOU OUT ON A DATE!” Josie snapped, unable to take it anymore.

PJ froze, eyes wide as she watched the gears turn in Hazel’s mind.

Then she had the audacity to look shocked, as if PJ hadn’t been perfectly clear before. “Oh!” She smiled awkwardly. “Um, yeah sure, I’d love to! I-I’ll wait outside while you get dressed and we can go.”

“Great!” PJ blurted out without much thought, not yet processing what was actually said. When she did, she did a double take. “Wait seriously?”

Hazel was actually blushing, as if PJ wasn’t sounding like the biggest idiot in the world. “I’ll um, I’ll just,” She gestured towards the door before hurrying out, leaving the three alone.

PJ let out a huge breath of relief as she approached her locker.

“You’re welcome.” Josie deadpanned, heading out with Isabel.

PJ flipped them off, but she couldn’t resist grinning wide as she got dressed.

Some would argue that was all thanks to Josie, but PJ liked to think she totally nailed it.

She got the date, didn’t she?
