“Go get ‘em, cowboy!”
Those aren’t the last words Eddie wanted Buck to hear from him. They don’t even come close. Screaming Buck’s name as he clambered up the ladder, trying desperately to be heard over the thunder and the clamor of the scene. Staring at Buck’s lifeless body suspended in midair like a marionette - all of these things will show up in his nightmares for years to come.
The ride to the hospital happened in a blur of movement, a cloud of sound, and a world without color. All Eddie can do is follow Bobby’s order to drive. He broke several traffic laws and nearly caused at least three accidents, but it's not important. All that matters is Buck.
Getting to the hospital is even more chaotic.
“Chim, I’ll take over!” Doing compressions and running alongside the gurney at the same time is no small task, and he nearly stumbled several times, but Eddie doesn’t care. He’ll do it for Buck, he’ll do anything for his best friend, his co-parent, his…oh.
He’s in love with him, isn’t he?
“30-year-old male struck by lightning, full cardiac arrest, he was down three minutes before we started compressions-”
“Lightning went through his hands and out his knee right down the midline there could be some damage to major organs-” Hen warned the medical team, her words tumbled out so fast that Eddie could hardly make sense of them.
“He’s in v-tech!” Chimney suddenly shouted and Eddie prepped the paddles. C’mon Buck, don’t leave me, don’t leave Chris… He thought as he pressed the paddles to Buck’s chest.
“CLEAR!”
Chimney’s gloved fingers pressed against Buck’s carotid and hope lights up his face as he says,
“We got a pulse!”
Now they’re taking Buck to a place Eddie can’t follow and everything around him becomes white noise. Bobby’s voice vibrated through his bones - history of blood clots, not currently on medication, allergy to Naproxen -
“Got it! We’ll do our best!”
“Do more!” Eddie’s voice cracked and he nearly fell to his knees, but someone caught him. Chim, maybe? He’s not sure. Tears burned behind his eyes and it’s all he can do to keep himself together.
Evan Buckley, I swear, I’ll kill you if you die on me, got it?
