Were We Enough?

Summary:

Shall we tell you of the Girls?

A submission to the Spacebattles.com 25th Anniversary Poetry Contest. Proofread by IdeaGenerator.

Notes:

This poem is based on the plot and vibe of the thread that first got me hooked on the site. Specifically, its about the parents of the heroes of the AU, known as the Hexachords, talking about the journey the girls went through. There is in indeed supposed to be a concrete story to all of this, but for here I more focused on metaphors and imagery in order to convey all of the emotions present when compressing the whole tale. I am interested to see how people interpret some of the stuff here, though I can clarify anything if it is very confusing.

Were We Enough?

By AG_AG

Shall we tell you of the Girls?

Beyond the veil of stars six were sent,
Maybe by chance, but surely by fate.
Bursting through the veil of commonplace,
They didn't just discover new worlds, no.

Instead they met friend and foe,
Forging bonds and inventions and discoveries
That unknowingly reverberated near endlessly
From those juvenile days.
They powered through all obstacles in their track
Not only them, but those that they came to love, soon grew
And were brave enough to fight for their light.

They were not the only ones who knew they were gone, though.

Back at home we could only watch from the remains
Of what was before the norm was reshaped, modified, converted,
From beyond the metaphysical blind
That was all the world could be interested in
After realizing that they had to return to the drawing board.

When our girls returned back to calamitous times,
They were not safe -none of us could be-
Not only existential terrors.
That would strike down everything admirable
But from the weakness, fear, and even vice
In all of ourselves.

We were only people in this new frontier
Of uncertainty. Were we enough
For our heroes, these friends, these children?

Some days were joyful, others not so,
But eventually the light began to rebound.
With courage they went back once more
To save those who had given them so much
Linking both old and new worlds together,
Into a community across the stars.
In the end fortune never doubted
That they would prevail.

Looking back on it now,
We did have it in ourselves.
In passing down treasured wisdom,
In not defining ourselves by past wrongs,
But realizing that connections we shared
Were The greatest gift we could give.

Looking back on it now,
It may seem like the journey is over,
But after all they have done for us,
And all we have done for them,
We can never capture how
These girls will continue to impact
The hearts of all of us.
In reality it is just the dawn
Of an eternal constellation.
