Chapter 1: An Unexpected Visitor

Chapter Text

[6 MONTHS AFTER DISBARMENT]

[WRIGHT TALENT AGENCY - OFFICE]

The lamp on my desk flickered, making my eyes sore as I stared into the papers, without getting anything in my head.
I held up my pen, in an attempt to write something with it, but put the pen down with a groan and laid my head against the desk.

(My name is Phoenix Wright. I …..work at the Wright Talent Agency.)

The only sound I could hair was the table fan that whirred on the desk, cooling me whenever it turned its head at me. It was the only thing to not make me feel like I was boiling in the American sun.
Over the sound of the fan, a deafening squeal pierced my years. I barely put my head up to see what it was, when my little red tornado whirred into the room with excitement. In her gloved hands was a bundle of confetti, red blue and yellow, and were gradually littering the floor. She wore a red silk top hat, with a cape of the same color adorned by a diamond brooch, and a black dress.

(This little magician is Trucy Wright, my ..daughter.)

“Daddy, Daddy!” She jumped up and down, littering more confetti, “The scruffy detective downtown said we could add CONFETTI to our shows!” She proudly lifted up the bundle. “He said it would bring FLAIR to it!” She giggled excitedly.
“Trucy,” I sat up “who’ll clean the confetti up then?”
“You, of course!”
I chuckled, “Yeah, Trucy, no.”
The little magician pouted.
“Daddy, EVERYONE has a price to pay for DAZZLING up their shows!”
“Trucy, the price it pays is an earful from the owner and your Daddy’s bad back from clean all that confetti.”
She stuck out her tongue, “No fair!”
She looked at me begrudgingly, “Whatchya doin’ anyway?”
“Trying to sleep.” I sighed.
“Daddy, you can’t sleep during work hours. What if someone sees you?!”
“Trucy, I don’t think anyone’s comin’ today in this heat.”
“Fair.” She peeked at my papers, “What’s that?”
“Oh, uh-” I sighed, “Nothing.”
“Oh Daddy,” She crossed her arms, littering more confetti to my dismay, “Ya didn’t still of anything to do?”
I chuckled, “Nah. Ya daddy’s too old to figure out things. What do I have you for?”
“I know!” She giggled.
I wiped my brow, “Well, ready to close up, then?”
“Yeah,” She sighed as she stuffed the confetti into her backpack, dropping more on the floor, “I just wish we had some more people here, y’know?”
“Yep.” I stood up and stretched.

As I wore my blue coat and left for the door, an alarming scream came through my doorstep.
“Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiickkkkkk!”
A girl entered, panting. She had black hair, tied into a topknot. The rest of the hair was tied into long bangs draped infront of her shoulders, and a long ponytail tied in the back. She wore peculiar purple robes with a large pink bow putting them together, and wore a necklace of large pearls and an emerald-carved jewel.

(This ……is Maya Fey)

“NICK, Nick oh my gosh are you okay, I came as fast as I could when I heard-”
She stopped mid-sentence as she glanced at the lapel of my blue coat. She gently reached out to touch it, with tears forming in her eyes.
“It-It’s really-”
We stood in silence for a moment, with Maya sniffling and putting her hands over her mouth, staring at the lapel, her cheeks flushed and her eyes glistening.
All of a sudden she abruptly pulled me into a hug, crying and muttering, “I-I-I’m sorry Nick, I sh-should’ve been there... I-I-If only I-I-I’ve been th-there I-I-I could’ve-“
I returned the hug, shushing her and calming her down. And before I knew it, I was crying tears of my own. “W-Why was I so stupid? T-The office, everything- I-It’s all my fault- I-I’m sorry.”
Maya patted my head lightly, as a gesture of comfort. We stayed like that for half-an-hour, with our eyes red and puffy, and my coat covered in snot and tears.
Just then, a little girl with a top hat interrupted our little moment.
“Daddy, is this my new mommy?”
Maya gave a violent start as she turned around to face the girl, stammering “Daddy? W-What?!”
With her face glistened with tears and her eyes red from crying, she turned to me with her eyebrows raised.
I put my hand to my neck, smiling sheepishly, “W-Well, I was gonna-”
“What did you do now, Nick?”
“W-Why are you saying this like I do this everyday?!”
“What did you do, Daddy?” Trucy joined in with her, “You’ve upset Mommy!”
I took a step back, raising up my arms defenseless, “L-Look, she’s THE client’s child, and a-as you know he disappeared s I just thought-”
Maya exploded with anger, with her fists clenched by the sides, “So you decided to take in a kid WHILE you’re outta your job? Are you THAT dumb, Nick?!”
Trucy imitated her pose, “Daddy, you’ve upset Mommy!”
“Yeah Nick, you’ve upset me! Are you out of your mind?!”
“Yeah Daddy!”
Maya paused, giving me a hard stare, “D-Don’t tell me this is outta revenge, just like that-”
I grabbed her by the shoulders, interrupting her, “W-What?! No, Maya, get that outta your head, do you think I’m THAT petty?!”
“Then why didn’t you tell me about all this?” She puffed up her cheeks, hurt, “Why do I have to get this info outta a newspaper and NOT YOU?”
“L-Look, you’re the new master now, a-and I didn’t want to trouble you so-”
“OH MY GOSH NICK, I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE SO DUMB! I literally can’t believe you!”

With that, she kneeled down next to the little girl and patted her head, “What’s your name, kid?”
“Trucy Wright, Magician Extraordinaire!” said My little girl with a proud expression on her little face.
“Alright Truce, I’m your Aunt Maya!” She clasped her hands together with a warm smile. “Sorry you LAME dad didn’t introduce you to your COOL aunt sooner.” She smiled, but glanced at me with daggers in her eyes.
“So,” she stood up, holding Trucy’s hand, “Tell you what, I’m gonna treat you to burgers, whaddya say huh?”
“You’re so cool, Maya!”
