Work Text:
It was dawn, with the sun barely awake, when the unknown wind of an envoy arrived.
Robin was already awake by the time, tending to some of her leftover work. She wasn’t easily frustrated, but the current issues near the northern border of their kingdom had left a bitter taste inside her mouth. She had been working day and night trying to find a way through the problems.
Robin tugged on her collar, sighing to herself as she stretched her arms. Standing up from her seat, Robin made a plan to walk and breathe in the morning air. It was better than being hauled in her stifling room. Her wings fluttered at the thought.
Several servants who were awake greeted her alike, their faces neutral with smiles. Robin mirrored the gesture, until she was met with a very familiar face.
“ Father Gopher, may Xipe bless you. ” She greeted him with a soft smile. The priest smiled in return, his expression wrinkled with age and a smooth tiredness. His eyes were closed as usual, a result of losing his eyesight in an incident. Thankfully, the harmonies were enough to help him navigate life.
“ Your Highness Robin, may Xipe sing for you. I see you are most enlivened for the day. ” Father Gopher stated, his smile staying in the same stiffness and the ever deep tone of his voice. The priest was dressed in his accustomed clothes, a long black robe and a black chasuble with white linings. His scarred navy wings twitched for a moment.
Robin nodded, “ There is still much to keep care of. It is best to be cautious than fall into the ravine. ” She responded as the priest hummed in acknowledgement.
His smile soften, “ Your concerns are valid as they are, Your Highness. The present tasks are an obstacle and the future ones are a telling themselves. It is an utmost miracle that we are still here. I found pride in your achievements, Your Highness. ”
Robin didn’t react to his words, all accustomed to his teachings and compliments. His stance shifted, a book held in his hand. “ I find pride in seeing how you have grown to be strong enough to lend a shoulder for His Highness Sunday. ” Father Gopher placed a hand over his chest, his expression wrinkled with a worried frown. He had watched the Halovian siblings since their childhood, after all.
Robin exhaled, “ I only do it for the sake of Penacony and my family, Father Gopher. ” She can’t quite disagree with his words. The priest smiled, “ As it has always been. For the Family. ”
For the Family.
Robin smiled in tandem at the words. Always for the Family. Her chest felt heavy at the words.
“ Ah, it seems I have occupied too much of your time, Your Highness. I will excuse myself, Your Highness Robin. May Xipe sings for you. ” The priest stated with an apologetic smile. Robin nodded.
“ May Xipe bless you, Dreammaster. ” Robin called, watching as Father Gopher’s smile widened just a bit before he disappeared from her sight. He was no doubt meeting with Sunday. She wondered if Sunday had gotten any rest, he always overworked himself.
As she stepped into the outside world, Robin’s eyes wandered to the set of armored guards standing vigilant near the gate. She motion towards the guard, halting her action when something in the air stilled. Her wings fluttered in response.
The lone gallop of the single envoy caught their attention in the quiet of the day. There was a single banner of Glamoth held high by the envoy and it would be seen as an insult to have such a thing in a kingdom such as Penacony. And yet, the envoy marched forward with unwavering determination before screeching to a respectful halt by the gate.
“ Your highness, permission to approach! ” Robin was quite intrigued by the distant, female voice echoing. She did not know what to make of this, but the envoy’s pure look in her eyes spoke something to her.
Robin looked at the guard with a nod, “ Permission granted. ” Robin carefully made her way closer, even when the guards told her not too. The envoy dismounted their horse. She was young for her age, shorter than Robin was and her face held nothing but determination– even if it wavers. She kept a close eye on her movement, showing no mind to the swords and spears pointed at her. With one order, Robin could have this girl killed.
“ I have come bearing an important message from the Crown Princess of Glamoth, ” the young girl announced, properly dropping to one knee as she presented Robin with a neatly designed letter. Robin was wary of such a thing, wondering if this was a ploy.
“ And may I ask for your name? ” Robin asked as she accepted the letter, letting a semblance of her harmony run through the parchment as an act of security. The young girl didn’t seem concerned with such an action, merely smiling in hesitation.
“ Sparkle, I’m the Crown Princess’ personal squire. ” Sparkled introduced herself with a slight bow. Robin’s eyes wandered to the clothing she wore, carved with such intricate design. Her eyebrows furrowed as she regarded the squire once more.
“ Sending her personal squire into the enemy’s territory is quite a… bold decision. ” Robin chose her words carefully as her thumb graced against the seal of the envelope.
Something formed in the pit of stomach as she stared at the lion insignia. Robin did not know what this meant but it didn’t feel like anything good.
Sparkle didn’t seem undeterred by such a question, either from pure beliefs or idiocy.
Her eyes seemed to glance at the guards surrounding her. “ Her highness wishes to convey her utmost sincerity. ” Her response doesn’t tell Robin anything else further. The Halovian narrowed her eyes at the young girl.
Sparkle lowered her head, as well as her voice. “ It’s a relatively important matter, your highness. ” There’s a slight hesitation found in the girl’s voice. She didn’t meet Robin’s eyes, head lowered as she took a step back.
“ What could be this important to prompt the Crown Princess of Glamoth to send a letter? I hope this isn’t a ploy of yours. ” Robin warned, her emerald eyes narrowing dangerously on the young squire. Sparkle doesn’t respond and Robin lets herself soften. There was no need to threaten such a young girl and if Robin’s magic was doing its work, Sparkle was sincere in her intention.
Robin unsealed the letter. It felt like she was unsealing a thousand year monster.
Present to Your Highness of Penacony,
I will make this brief, as we both know of our current stifling predicament.
As you may know, the Glamoth outnumbers Penacony by one to three. You must also know of Belobog’s current increase of engagement and hostility. As well as the impending danger up north.
In light of these events, there’s only two way out;
Glamoth will advance forward, conquering Penacony for our own and destroying any resistance.
Or, Penacony willingly offers its power to Glamoth- forming an alliance by the ties of matrimony between Your Highness and Myself.
For someone as inductive as Your Highness, the correct answer is already clear.
If my squire does not return by tomorrow’s dawn, Glamoth will commence destruction.
I shall say it again; Your Highness has until tomorrow’s dawn to make a decision.
Choose wisely.
Sincerely,
Crown Princess Firefly of Glamoth.
Robin inhaled a sharp breath as she processed the meaning of the letter. Something burns in her throat as she looks at the squire with mildly angered worry. She let the feeling simmered down with a controlled exhale, it was useless to be mad now.
“ A sign of sincerity, you say? ” Robin echoed, carefully observing the squire. Sparkle nodded. She looked down at the smaller girl, the pit in her stomach growing bigger.
A part of Robin needed to let Sunday know of this. The both of them were in tandem when it came to governing the kingdom, it would do good to have a second opinion on this. Especially when it concerned the both of them. But looking back at the letter and the words written, Robin wondered if this was worth it to bother Sunday.
She knew her brother. Her brother who burnt every midnight oil trying to keep the kingdom safe– who locked himself in his room after the death of their parents. Her brother who shoulder every burden that came their way as he profusely protected her. Even though Robin had the same standing as him, it always felt like Sunday was miles away from her.
Sunday shouldn’t be burdened by this. He had too much on his shoulder and Robin did whatever she could to alleviate it– even going as far to contest for the throne, solely on the purpose to take away some of his responsibility. So he may not fall into a deep sleep by the hands of fatigue.
Robin was done laying around, sitting like the pretty flower she was. The world wasn’t as kind, especially to people like her brother. And if she could take away the pressure, take away the mountains of boulders on brother’s shoulder, she would do anything.
Even if it's laying down in a cage set by their enemy.
The squire must have sensed her turmoil as she spoke up. “ Your Highness, the Crown Princess does not wish for needless bloodshed. ”
Robin gazed at the girl for a moment, before tearing her eyes away back to the parchment. Her mind swims with hundreds of thoughts, like a chaos whirlpool forming a deep tornado.
Choose wisely.
Except she didn’t have a choice.
Everyone a universe, everything that come to us, even your trembling breath is magic, it fills up all the world
“ Robin! ” Sunday yelled out, his expression twisted in crystal concern and shock.
His voice echoed with a deep tone of worry and panic as he searched out for his beloved sister. Robin’s eyes widened slightly at his appearance before softening as he pulled her into a hug.
His body was quivering, either from the morning cold or something more. Robin chose not to think of it.
He placed his gentle hands on her shoulders, golden eyes searching for something against her own.
“ Robin, why? ” His voice cracked from the pressure, a wallowing tone of agony that struck the weakest point of Robin.
The female Halovian willed herself not to turn back, not when she had made the decision. Even when the glint of sorrow was spiraling deep within her brother’s eyes.
“ You– You should have told me Robin. I would have done something! Not you, oh Aeons, please. ” Sunday’s hands trembled against her shoulder and Robin felt the flames of agony clawed against her skin and bone.
Yet she pushed forward, as the bird who had braved the storm has now landed in a perpetual space of agony.
“ It’s what I have to do, brother. ” She whispered, solemn yet undefeated. Robin refused to do so. The world could burn her, deep resigning flames of sorrow and harrowing sea of regret might drown her but Robin could never forget the grace of the sky. She refuses to back down.
It was good while it lasted. The taste of flowers and the singing wind of the castle’s garden. But now the little bird has to go.
“ You don’t need to. Retract your statement, I’ll make another proposal. Glamoth will have to heed, I will— ” Sunday spoke in a worry, his eyes narrowed with a dangerous glint. Robin internally winced, knowing of this habit.
“ You will what , brother? Retract my statement and offer yourself ? We both know there is no other way. Glamoth towers over us. Penacony might have survived up until now- only because there was never a war. ” Robin’s voice was cutting.
Like an unruly knife against a thin layer of skin. It was far from the melodic chase of her harmony. Sunday was rightfully shocked at her words, eyes wide. But there was something in his eyes and the lack of counter to her words.
Robin hated talking to her brother like that. She hated using her voice for any of that. And the lump of guilt in her throat always reminds her of that.
Blessed by the Harmony and yet– she was far more disorganized.
Robin exhaled, low and exhausted.
“ We both know how things will go. You are ridden with too many, brother. Penacony will not survive a full out war, not against Glamoth. ” Robin shook her head, reminding herself of the cage she had stepped in.
“ This is my decision, brother. The alliance would do good for us- and you. You have no need to worry about the Glamoth anymore. ” Robin said with a soft smile, brushing a hand over Sunday’s. The worry doesn’t leave his eyes, it never does.
“ What about you? ” He whispered and something in Robin crashed, like a dying bird to the earth. She ignored it, even as her heart beat painfully at the thought.
If there's someone who has to go, it should be me.
She doesn’t voice it, she doesn't let the most disappointing part of her speak. Sunday didn’t need more things to worry about and Robin needed to face reality.
It felt like the both of them knew the answers and yet, none were harmonious to speak of it. Robin pushed down the deepest of her thoughts and pulled away. She held Sunday’s hand, gracing her thumb against his hand.
“ I will be fine, brother. There is no need to worry. ” She shook her head, letting the harmony fill her words to leave a semblance of comfort, even if it was rigidly cold with the decision they had built in a bristling winter. Sunday’s golden eyes burnt with a sense of sorrow and regret– Robin felt worthless to not be able to alleviate those feelings.
The two siblings held hands as they watched the flowers sang along with the morning wind. As the breeze swept passed, Robin closed her eyes– just as the cage closed on her.
“ You don’t have to do this, you know? ” Robin heard as she turned around, a gentle smile making its way onto her face as Misha entered the room, a jar of water in his hands. He seemed a bit anxious, blue eyes full of worries. He was a lot less skittish these days but the news must have worried him a lot.
The smile didn’t leave her face, even if it’s changed in tone. “ I know, Misha. But it is something I need to do. ” The entirety of Penacony’s fate rode on her shoulder now. If anything goes wrong with the alliance, their lives would be cut short. Robin doesn’t want any of that.
The blue haired boy frowned in response. ” Just because it is something you need to do doesn’t mean you have to like it, Robin. ” Misha shook his head, his eyebrows curled in sympathy. Robin exhaled, knowing the truth of his words.
Seeing the lack of response from her, Misha only shook his head with a heavy exhale. He mustered up a shaky smile, holding her hand for what little comfort he could give her. Misha knew that Robin would not back down from what she had decided, even if it was at the cost of herself.
Robin returned the smile, somewhat crooked and stiff- but a smile nonetheless. It’s not comforting– not with their current situation and the thought of Robin so far away from them. Robin, in their enemies’ territory. Misha and Sunday wouldn't be able to do anything if something was to happen to her.
Not to say Robin was weak– she was blessed with the purest form of Harmony the kingdom had seen but the trembling worries and fear for her safety was never wrong to pick on. Misha just hoped the Crown Princess of Glamoth would treat her right– or in the least, treat Robin as a human.
Robin stifled a groan, pinching her temples as her expression pinched in pain. Misha, as vigilant as ever, was quick to hand a cup of water. Robin smiled apologetically at him, drinking the water gratefully. The throbbing didn’t quite subside but Robin tried her best to ignore it.
“ Has it been getting worse? ” Misha questioned, worried. Robin shook her head, “ Not quite. I’ll be fine, Misha. The main doctor has prescribed me with effective medicines. ” Robin smiled in hope to ease his worries. Misha pursed his lips, not quite taking Robin’s words.
Misha hummed, gaining Robin’s attention. “ You know, I’m also a part of the family. So technically– ”
“ If you think Sunday and I would marry you away to our enemy, you need to rethink your choices, young man. ” Robin chastised, flicking his forehead and receiving a yelp from the younger boy. She poked him slightly, “ I’m doing this because I need to. ”
Misha frowned, rubbing where Robin had jabbed. “ And I’m saying this that you don’t need to. ” He countered.
Robin shook her head, “ The Crown Princess specifically asked for me. The decision has already been made. ” She said, just as patient as she had always been. Misha raised an eyebrow at her words.
“ Did she specifically name you ? ” The response to his question told him everything and Misha couldn’t help but feel worried for Robin.
“ You already know the answer, Misha. ” The solemn yet wistful smile Robin gave will be burnt into his mind.
Mystifying universe, shining on us like the moon, every silver beam that falls is magic, they’re close enough to touch
Robin sighed heavily as she willed herself to relax against her clothing. Her emotional turmoil had gotten the best of her, leaving a ruinous affect on her Harmony for a few moments. Robin had felt embarrassed at such a thing to happen. She had to keep herself calm and collected, knowing of the situation she had stepped foot into.
She brushed her hair, letting the periwinkle strands streamed over her hand. She’s careful not to mess up the intricate care that was put into her hair by the servants– she really didn’t want to arrive looking messy on such an important event.
It didn’t take a moment for a knock to echoe against the door. Robin smiled as the door opened, Sunday and Misha stepping in. As usual, the look on their face signifies nothing but worry and concern.
Sunday’s sigh was what cut the silence short. Robin shook her head, knowing of his words. The brother stared at her for a moment, gazing at the emerald eyes that reminded him so much of their late beloved mother. And just like their mother, Sunday knew Robin was dead set on her decisions. Nothing would ever convince her.
He nodded, eyes downcasted with so much care for his sister. Robin’s heart wrenched painfully at the look, throat burning with shame. Misha smiled sadly at her, expression anxious and shaky. Robin reaches out to hug the both of them– the last of her family. Misha and Sunday returned it unconditionally, their arms comforting her through the incoming storm.
She pulled away with a regretful smile and Misha brushed any wrinkles or dust off her uniform. She had foregone wearing a dress– it didn’t seem like it would be right for the occasion, no matter what people would think.
She lets the two fuss over her, feeling somewhat happy and pleased at their constant worry for her. It made her a little sad, knowing this might be the last. One of the few last she would be able to have with them.
Misha pursed his lips, “ As I’ve said— ”
“ No. ” Robin said with a flat expression. Sunday looked between them curiously, eyes signaling his wants to know in on their conversation.
“ Misha thinks he should be married off. ” Robin says with a somewhat spiteful grin and Sunday’s expression turned blank. Misha looked embarrassed at the reveal.
“ For your record, I think the both of you shouldn’t be married off to anyone. ” Sunday remarked with a slightly bitter but teasing tone. Robin rolled her eyes indignantly. Misha looked slightly offended at his words.
“ For your record, I also think you two shouldn’t marry anyone. “ Robin countered with a giggle at Misha’s looks of betrayal and Sunday’s non-amused face. Misha huffed, “ The both of you should never marry anyone. “ The youngest remarked mockingly, eliciting another giggle from Robin and a smile from Sunday. But Misha’s words reminded her of her current situation, filling her chest with a heavy sensation.
Sunday noticed her subtle change of expression immediately, “ When I hoped for the day you’d get married, I didn’t mean like this. “ He said, voice full of unspoken remorse. Remorse for what Robin does not know, but the pit in her stomach seems to swallow everything she ought to guess.
On the day of her wedding, Robin would have thought she would wear a dress. Something beautiful, filled by the colors of harmony with the warmth of her love instilled in strings of purity of the dress. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that day would ever come but Robin didn’t want to think too bad of everything. She was apprehensive of her future wife but if the Crown Princess of Glamoth was as heartless as everyone had said- she wouldn’t have proposed an alliance between Glamoth and Penacony.
Turning back to the mirror, Robin exhaled as she looked over her uniform. She examined her reflection, fixing any wrinkles or wrongs. Reminding herself of her wedding- if she can call it one - Robin was aware she knew nothing of the Crown Princess of Glamoth. She had heard from Generals alike that the woman was a beast in her own rights on the battlefield. Robin had never been on the battlefield but Firefly seemed like an intimidating figure.
The thought was in tandem whenever Penacony soldiers fought against Glamoth as it affected the people and economy.
Sunday smiled apologetically, “ I will head on first. Unfortunately, there are guests to be attended to. “ He withheld the urge to roll his eyes, gaining a giggle from Robin. The prince nodded at Misha, bidding one last goodbye before he exited the room. Robin turns to Misha as the boy wipes the tassel of her epaulet. She let him do so, knowing of his anxious behavior when he worries too much.
“ You’ve grown a lot, Misha. “ Robin stated as an observation, noting the boy’s height. If she remembered correctly, he barely reached her chin last year. Now, he only has to tilt his head a little to meet her eyes. Misha laughed, eyes crinkling with a sort of joy. Robin was going to miss it.
“ Well, this castle fed me all of the nutrients you could find. I’m grateful for that. “ Misha nodded, looking at his cousin apologetically. Contrast to Robin’s white uniform, Misha wore a dark uniform. He had always favored lighter color so it very much reminded Robin that Misha had grown into such a dignified young man. Robin was glad that they weren’t marrying him off to their long time enemy. Misha doesn’t deserve that.
“ And well, I kind of have too. “ Misha continued, his voice quiet. He took a step back. “ I’m in charge of the Golden Hour now. “ Robin nodded at his words, she would miss the palace. “ Don’t burn anything while I’m gone. “ She teased.
“ No promises. “ Misha smiled. Robin lets her smile drop as she inhales, “ I’m gonna miss you and Sunday. I’m gonna miss everyone here. “
“ Yeah, I’ll miss you too. “ Misha nodded, his eyes slightly watery. Robin moved to comfort him but the sudden knock on the door interrupted her action. She ignored the intense beating of her heart as she answered.
“ Enter. “
Robin was not surprised to see the squire again. Sparkle bowed deeply before the princess as a greeting, “ Everything is ready, Your Highness. It’s time. “
Robin’s breath hitched at her words.
“ It’s time. “ Robin echoed, heart feeling heavy. She nodded at Sparkle, who mirrored the action before exiting the room. Misha regarded her with one last encouraging smile. She followed the squire out, her heart racing like a horse on a battlefield. The echoing rumbling of the citizens’ cheering gave her enough apprehension. Robin can’t even begin guessing how many citizens had gathered to see the most awaited event for the last few months.
The wide hall greeted her with the presence of knights and nobles alike- who all fell to their knees at her arrival. She smiled and greeted them, eyes wavering as she regarded the banners of Glamoth and Penacony. She noted how they all seemed more excited and happier than she is, no doubt relieved by the ending of years of conflict between Glamoth and Penacony.
Robin wasn’t sure how to feel about that thought. She was grateful that the hostility between Glamoth and Penacony was finally coming to a grinding end but there’s a heavy lump in her throat that she could not explain. The twisting sensation in her stomach intensified as she halted right in front the door.
Robin took a deep breath.
The door opens, and Robin feels her breath stolen away.
Nobody told her how gorgeous Firefly was.
Crown Princess Firefly was a beauty in her own rights. She had a softer feature than Robin expected. She was waiting at the altar, donned in her military outfit of striking red and gold, a sharp contrast to Robin’s blue and white. With her hands behind her back, Firefly’s sharp gaze reminded Robin of a predator when their eyes locked.
Suddenly, the lump in her throat had grown and it felt like Robin was drowning in a desert. She took a deep breath, pushing every will she had to not look away from the other, whose eyes followed her every step until they were face to face. It was a lie to say that Robin didn’t feel intimidated whatsoever.
Firefly had this engraving aura, as if something was boiling deep inside and waiting to burst in a blink of an eye– like a volcano awaiting its years. Firefly’s gaze didn’t leave her anytime soon and it felt like she was trying to burn the deepest part of Robin and let the flames devour her alive. She would have feared such a thought, shuddering at the mere imagination.
If only Firefly’s harmony wasn’t as warm as a fireplace during an apocalyptic winter. The semblance of such harmony was what kept Robin away from her indignant thoughts.
They don’t exchange a sliver of words– Robin finding it awkward to do so in such atmosphere and Firefly probably didn’t see the need. Robin knew Firefly would rather be anywhere but here, evident by the harsh clench of her jaw and attempts to relax her rigid nature. Robin almost wanted to comfort her but she figured she wouldn’t really be the right person to do so.
The priest cleared his throat, smiling at the couple.
“ Today, ” he started, “ We have gathered to witness an important event. A joyous occasion; the merging of two nations, as enemies shall be no more! ”
The thundering cheers and claps of the citizens sent a shuddering wave to Robin. She kept quiet and calm, reciting the hundreds of harmony in her mind. She was used to dealing with the public– the pretty flower she was –but it felt bitter to witness the happiness of others, in a place where she felt like the curtain was slowly closing.
Robin barely snapped back into reality as Firefly shifted, taking her hand with a rather gentle hold. The Halovian held back a flinch as Firefly’s sunset eyes burnt with a glint of emotion. Robin wished to not ever know. She’s impressed at how stoic Firefly had been, not once did her eyes waver. She would have genuinely applauded the determination, if Robin wasn’t the one standing there.
Well, she made her decision. The bird had already flown.
“ Crown Princess Firefly of the Kingdom of Glamoth, do you promise to uphold your vows of this marriage, through day and night until your dying day? ” The priest gestured and Firefly did not hesitate.
“ I do. ”
The priest turned to her and Robin felt like she had been pricked by thorns.
“ Princess Robin of the Penacony Kingdom, do you promise to uphold your vows of this marriage, through day and night until your dying day? ”
Robin locked eyes with Sunday, who was sitting across. She realized now how far he was. His face was carefully blank but the grip he had on the armchair told her enough.
Emerald eyes locked with the sunset.
Choose wisely.
“ Yes. I do. ” Barely a whisper.
And the cage was locked.
In the beginning of the month of spring, Robin finally left Penacony and for the first time– stepped a foot inside the mercilessly beautiful Chrysalis Palace. It was the main palace where Crown Princess Firefly was situated and Robin didn’t know what to make of the odd contrast.
Crown Princess Firefly was of sharp flames, boiling charisma and burning gaze. Everytime Robin met her eyes, she felt the need to back away– to let the fire trailing behind Firefly to engulf her whole without a single resistance to it. For Crown Princess Firefly was like a bonfire, shining brighter than anything else.
All of that contrasted to the pale, somewhat hollow atmosphere of the palace. Bright colors existed as if they had been drained by the vast emptiness of shadows lurking around the palace. Everyday Robin felt as if something was desperately shackling the place, its harmony so silent. It felt like the walls would narrow on her.
All of that changes whenever Crown Princess Firefly appears– and like a moth to a flame –everything and everyone seems to gravitate towards her. The harmony changed whenever Crown Princess Firefly walked through these halls, like a sun in its own system.
Robin wondered if the flames ever burned out.
Even if it never compares to Golden Hour, Chrysalis Palace was a beauty in its rights. Despite the hollowing feeling poking at her in every corner, Robin came to appreciate the intricate designs of the palace. She has heard of the palace in passing time, where gossips ran like the wind and the harmony chimed in.
It felt different to experience it on her own, seeing the palace’s beauty with her own eyes– only wishing for its harmony to sing brighter and louder. She had been particularly sensitive due to the foreign atmosphere, unfamiliar resonance of harmonies that captivated her. Nights went on longer due to it, headaches were an old friend and thundering thoughts accompanied her.
Despite their current status, Firefly and Robin were rarely together. Unless there was an official and unavoidable reason, they wouldn’t be in each others’ space. If anything, Firefly avoided her like a plague.
It almost felt like she made sure their schedule never matched, therefore not a reason to meet Robin. They were even situated in different rooms. The Halovian had gotten and accepted the message. Robin had memorized Firefly’s weekly activities to know when to avoid the woman.
They run into each other sometimes– out of pure coincidence. All Robin could explain was that the atmosphere was– awkward and somewhat unpleasant. She did not want to think of Firefly like that, especially on the spectrum she does not even know the Crown Princess. But the short exchange of two clipped words and ignorance of Robin’s attempt to be friendly didn’t bore well– not for her and the servants.
She tells herself it doesn’t matter in the end and that these days would become the norm that will pass on like the dead leaves. Firefly’s harmony was well hidden– it had a warmth unlike any other and that the Crown Princess was not what she was shown.
Well, it’s not Robin who will ever know of that warmth.
It would be a lie not to say it didn’t hurt. There was no knight in shining armor. Robin understood Firefly’s reluctance to engage in a conversation with her supposed (past) enemy but Robin had hoped they would establish some sort of understanding.
Well, she would be a hypocrite to blame Firefly when she also hadn’t done anything. The marriage was solely for the purpose of alliance and benefits for their kingdom, there was no worth of putting another nuance to it. Even with that, Robin understood and respected Firefly’s decision.
After all, she was only a caged bird.
And Firefly seemed to have a knack for showing that; intentionally or not.
She had been on her way through the hallways, drowning out the thundering harmonies and buzzing melodies. Sparkle had informed her of her callings to the weekly meetings and Robin was quite nervous. It would be the first time she faced the nobles of Glamoth.
It would have been if she hadn’t bumped into Firefly– who was also attending. The Crown Princess’ eyes flashed with an anomaly of emotions before it hardened and sharpened like a well made blade.
“ Do not concern yourself with this. ” Firefly had spoke, face twisted with something and tone scalding hot. It felt like hot iron had slashed her.
The dissonance grew louder and the walls grew noisy. White noise whistled against her ears, the familiar pounding in her head returning. Thundering hollow of melodies seemed to catch up to her, drowning, drowning, drow ning, drowning, drowning —
Robin forced herself to breathe.
It’s only by Sparkle’s intervention she was able to rip herself from her spiraling thoughts. The squire had been strolling along the hallway when she saw the Halovian standing there motionlessly.
“ Are you alright, Your Highness? ” The squire raised an eyebrow, eyes deep with curiosity. Robin ignored the harmony of concern laced around her voice.
She mustered a shaky yet stiff smile, feeling the hair on her nape rose. It felt suffocating, like something heavy crushing her. The tight knot in her stomach, all jumbled up as they whirlwind into a spiraling whirlpool. Her throat felt harshly dry, like sand underneath the never ending sun.
Sparkle didn’t push any further, eyes darting somewhere before she nodded. Robin expected the squire to move on, even if the latter’s presence filled in the untenanted harmony. Sparkle leaned in, still somewhat keeping the formal tone of body language with Robin.
“ Your Highness, I know someplace great to relax. ” The squire gave a mischievous smile, hands behind her back. Her energy was contagious, driving away Robin’s thundering thoughts as she focused on the squire’s harmony– enough to ground her but not enough to read her stories.
“ Well, if you’re willing to share with me. ” The Halovian smiled, wings fluttering slightly. Sparkle nodded in approval, winking at her as she led Robin somewhere. The princess was relieved to be away from that hall. But a sudden thought hit her, sending a wave of realization through her.
“ Ah, Sparkle? ” The Halovian called out and the squire slowed down to a halt, eyes prepared and curious. The Halovian swallowed but pushed through with her decision.
“ Could you show me the way to the library? ” She inquired, carefully lacing her tone and expression with neutrality for asking such a thing. In the weeks of her stay here, Robin had not asked for anything specific. It was a lot more nerve wracking to do so now. She was careful not to stir up any sort of issues, knowing it would only add an undesirable layer of trouble.
If Sparkle was surprised, the squire was an expert at hiding it. The warmth of her harmony hadn’t left, static in its usual melody. Robin didn’t admit it but she was relieved. The former nodded at the request, gesturing forward.
“ Of course, Your Highness. Please follow me. ”
The trip to the Royal Library was uneventful at most. Robin exhaled a heavy sigh as her eyes wandered through the stacks of scrolls arranged neatly on the shelves. Her impromptu presence had alerted the assistants, all scrambling out of their positions. There’s only one that greeted her amidst the chaos, alluring harmony and charming voice.
“ Welcome to the Glamoth’s Royal Library, Your Highness. ” The woman greeted, soft voice of knowing melody and soothing coolness. Robin smiled, stifling a little laugh as one of the assistants almost tumbled to the ground. Sparkle gave him an unimpressed look.
“ Your Highness, this is the Head Manager of the Royal Library, Black Swan. ” Sparkle introduced and Robin hummed approvingly as the harmony chimed along the reveal of Black Swan’s name. The woman’s harmony was a set of coolness, like a stream of river amidst a lush forest. Robin let herself relax.
“ How can we be of help to Your Highness? ” Black Swan questioned, a small smile on her face.
“ Could you possibly let me see of the recent economic and agriculture survey? ” Robin was grateful for all the time she had practiced to keep up a calm face. The Manager nodded, “ Certainly, Your Highness. Although there is a matter concerning your request. ” The woman informed, voice pristine.
At Robin’s look of curiosity and approval, Black Swan continued. “ All activities regarding the scrolls of the Royal Library are to be reported back to her Highness Firefly. ” Robin jolted in surprise at the information. Instead of thinking further, Robin accepted the condition. It was the Glamoth’s Royal Library, it made sense for there to be superverliance regarding any important.
Black Swan smiled, bowing to her words. Meanwhile, Sparkle led Robin to take a seat at the table.
Firefly was quietly signing through the mountains of paperwork, hand in a blur as she wrote words after words. Her eyes were solely on the parchment, never straying away.
She was interrupted by a sharp knock on the door, her hand halting by reflex. Firefly furrowed her eyebrows, shaking her head clear of her thoughts. Not even pristine wings and angelic periwinkle could ever bother her.
“ Enter. ” With her permission, the door creaked open– stepped in Sparkle who wore her usual smile. Firefly raised an eyebrow at her appearance, eyes immediately going back to her work. The princess hoped it was about work and not—
“ Her Highness Robin has entered the library and— ”
Firefly flinched.
“ Stop. ” She hissed out. Sparkle did so, blinking in confusion at the sudden command. The squire looked genuinely taken aback by her words. Firefly swallowed, feeling the bitter taste of guilt on her tongue.
“ …My apologies, I don’t know what has gotten into me. ” She sighed, setting aside her finished work. She still had a lot to work through. Sparkle nodded, still silent. She seemed understanding of the situation but Firefly was only more apprehensive about the reaction. She did not mean to say such a thing.
Firefly exhaled, head pounding with a pain she can’t describe. “ Sparkle, from now on, you have no need to inform me of the Princess’ every move. ” Again, if the squire was surprised, she didn’t show it. Sparkle raised an eyebrow, a glint of a smile dancing by her lips. Firefly shot a glare, admonishing for whatever indignant thought that crossed her mind.
Instead, Sparkle asked carefully. “ Are you sure? ”
She stared at the Princess, who blinked in confusion regarding her words. Instead of elaborating, Sparkle set her hands behind her back and bowed slightly.
“ As you wish, Your Highness. ” The squire heeded, her smile telling nothing else. With another bow, Sparkle left the office, leaving Firefly alone to her thoughts. The Princess sighed and shook her head, she really didn’t know what goes on in the squire’s head.
Thoughts drifting, Firefly picked out a small parchment from her drawer, a paper worn by time and love. Her face softens as she stares at the paper, still remembering that moment like it was yesterday. Scarred hand tightened as she placed a light kiss on it, burning a mantra of wishes deep in her heart. Putting it away, Firefly groaned as a familiar pain settled in.
The Princess rolled her shoulders, feeling the aches as she thought of emerald eyes.
“ Thank you, Sparkle. I apologize for burdening you with such a task. ” Robin smiled apologetically at the squire, who shook her head dismissively.
“ It’s of no worries, Your Highness. ” The squire smiled, placing down the scrolls and books Robin had requested in her endeavor of broadening her knowledge of Glamoth. Looking over the materials, Robin couldn’t help but sighed.
It’s somewhat true that she had done this out of impulse, but Robin found the Kingdom of Glamoth interesting. A kingdom smaller than others, but absolutely big with its strength. Compared to others, Glamoth had a lot of geological disadvantage— which was amazing they were able to thrive this far. All of the book, however, never spoke of the ascension to the throne.
“ It’s thanks to the sacrifice of the Royal Family that we are able to continue living greatly, ” Sparkle had said once, a mischievous smile on her face. Her eyes were glazed with something, an untold memory locked behind a wave of emotions. It was gone as fast as it appeared. Sparkle smiles and Robin admits that the girl was a master at hiding her emotions.
Robin’s eyes downcasted to the history book she held. Somewhat, the object felt heavier than it should be. Robin looked away, ignoring the ringing of Sparkle’s melodies. Even if it could satisfy her curiosity, Robin knew better than to read someone’s story.
Reading the history of Glamoth and what had come before the current Crowned Princess led Robin to think of her own kin. Sunday was in all, a benevolent ruler. A Prince fitted for the title of King. Due to the sudden death of their parents, the two royalties were left to deal with the aftermath in such a harrowing way.
Sunday, being the older one, had taken the mantle of being a temporary ruler. Robin would have agreed– seeing as how that role clearly suited him.
But that day when she saw him, face streamed with dried tears, eyes so haunted and hollow — she did not wish that for him anymore. So she made the impulsive decision to contest for the throne, splitting the palace in two as well as the eyes watching them. She knew of the discussion, the opinions of their ascension. After all, only one could become King.
Robin knew. She was not as good as Sunday, always behind what he does. But even so, she tried. They tried, even if it meant putting down their dreams. If Sunday thought that the world only shone for Robin, Robin thought that the world only existed because people like Sunday decided to care. It’s somehow the same for Crown Princess Firefly, isn’t it?
Robin snapped out of her thoughts as Rio- a young maid -placed a cup of tea; jasmine with a presence of honey, like the dew leaves in an upfront morning. The aroma enthralled Robin, but not before she gave the maid a polite look of confusion. Rio smiled shyly, “ A cup of fresh tea is always good for the mind, Your Highness. ”
With that, the young maid bowed and stepped off to the side. Robin made sure to smile at her. The young maid was one of the members of the envoys tasked to care for Robin during her stay in the Chrysalis Palace. Although the idea had been met with resistance, the Crown Princess made an exception as a compensation. She knew of Rio but Robin was a bit unfamiliar with other members of the envoy.
Robin peered at the cup warily before giving into her desires. She carefully lifted the cup, regal with the etiquette she has been taught. The fresh taste of jasmine invaded her senses nicely as Robin relaxed in tandem. It’s amazing how a cup of tea could let her clear her whirlwind of mind. She would have to thank Rio for this.
Robin closed the books with a sigh, instead turning her attention to the pen and parchment she had left on the table this morning. Feeling a little nostalgic, she lets the pen glide over the material. It’s been a while, after all.
Dear brother,
I hope this letter may reach you while you are in good spirit and health. Admittedly, I have been worried but I for sure that you are more than capable to handle such situation.
My stay here has been good, the Chrysalis Palace is a beauty on its own. Even if it doesn’t compared to the Golden Hour, of course. It has been a little taxing of my resonance to sync with the harmonies here, so the days have been slower than usual. The servants here are magnificent, so you need not worry of me. Crown Princess Firefly is… an enigma of her own but she had been nothing but accomodating.
I wish you and Misha dearest would be able to see the amazing view here.
I do not wish to make this letter longer than it is supposed to but I incredibly miss Penacony and subsequently; the family of mine. I hope the burden on your shoulders are lifted, even by a finger of the Aeons.
Sincerely your beloved sister,
Robin.
Robin smiled wistfully, gracing her hand writing with a downcasted look before she folded and sealed the parchment inside the envelope. She gestured to one of the maids, a member of the envoy.
Robin presumed the maid was new, as she was not familiar. She handed over the letter, “ Please care for this with utmost attention. It is important. ” She smiled as the maid bowed and received the letter. She pushed the thoughts back into her mind, relieved that something had been taken care of.
The door creaked open and again stepped in Sparkle. Robin smiled softly at the squire’s appearance. Despite being Crown Princess Firefly’s squire, Sparkle always seemed to be around Robin. The halovian wasn’t sure of the girl’s secret but it seemed like Sparkle always had a knack of finding her whenever and wherever. And the amount of screaming among the servants who were unfortunate enough to be met with Sparkle’s ire.
“ Greetings, Your Highness. It is a most wonderful day, isn’t it? ” Sparkle greeted gleefully as Robin chuckled. “ Quite. It seems like a wonderful day to enjoy the sun. ” She said in turn.
Sparkle hummed knowingly, “ Well, Your Highness is her wife… ”
“ Then, why don’t this mere squire show Your Highness a magnificent place of sorts? ” Sparkle offered, bowing to extend a hand of escort. Robin smiled at the formal gesture, even if she was surprised at the offer. Accepting the squire’s hand, Robin’s smile grew wider as hints of melodies appeared around her. Sparkle smiled in tandem and led the way.
They went through a few empty hallways and Robin couldn’t help the frown on her face. It felt so wrong, so hollow that Robin suppressed a shiver at the muted harmonies. It felt like walking through a maze of trees, empty of presence but the dreadful ambient always poking you.
However, as Sparkle led her through a specific hallway, Robin felt her breath stolen from her lungs. The end of the way was a lush garden, inhabited by myriads of flowers. Colors filled every space, like clouds upon the sky. Not a single space was left alone, all held by the roots of life and vivid of love. The harmonies were like drugs to Robin’s ears.
“ This place is…? ” She trailed off, unable to continue as she knelt down. Her hand graced one of the flowers.
Sparkle tilted her head, “ This is the main Garden. It’s restricted and only a few have access, including the Royal Family. ” She stated with a knowing smile. Robin smiled, averting her gaze back to the flowers. Something burnt in her throat, a heavy lump weighing her.
“ It’s beautiful. ” She whispered. Robin couldn't take her eyes off the beautiful sight.
Then she laughed, “ Well, beautiful is an understatement. ” Robin let herself hummed, finally releasing the restraint harmonies she had accumulated. The energy spread across like a crashing wave, the roots of life responding eagerly with its own magic. Robin let her harmony blend with the others, forming an order and choir like no other.
She let her feet take her forward, humming a sweet tune with her own words.
( You’ve become my universe, a circle that never ends, )
The words came barreling like a waterfall meeting its river for the first time. Robin could feel the familiar dull pain coursing through her head but it was nulled by the myriads of harmonies wrapped all around her, cocooning her world with shades and shapes of colors.
( Reach for my heart, you’ll find your name, )
It felt all too familiar and all too foreign, like a distant memory, seen but shattered in little pieces— always there but too small to pick up and pieced back together.
( Make it happen to you, make it happen for you, )
The dull pain in her head seemed to grow in harmony with the resonance around her. Ambient noise burnt like an explosive, a painful echo in her mind. Robin felt drunk by it, her wings fluttering in response. The skin on her back itched with the urge to let her wings free.
Robin staggered for a moment, the harmonies coming to a screeching halt— like glass against a broken mirror. The world seemed to freeze for a moment as Robin clutched her head, an onslaught of throbbing pain greeting her. The world seemed to flip for a moment before it dissipated. Robin blinked sluggishly as the pain receded.
The first thing she was met with was bright golden eyes staring at her intently. Robin’s mind short circuited for a moment before the horror in her processed the sight of a giant, feline, scary, predatory, beautiful lion staring at her. She scrambled back with a yelp, the Halovian’s instinct screaming in slight panic at the sight of such a predator.
Her wings flared in distress and the lion perked up at the signs. Keeping eye contact with her, the feline stalked forward with a purpose. Sparkle watched with vigilant eyes, ready to act if something was to happen.
The only thing keeping Robin calm was her harmonies and resonance. The flowers sang for her, comforting her senses and alarming instincts. Her train of thoughts were a mess, crashing into one another like an arena of galore.
The lion was considerate with its slow movement that it gave Robin time to calm down. She swallowed the lump in her throat, eyes meeting Sparkle’s in slight fear. The squire blinked before smiling cheerfully.
“ They do not bite, Your Highness. ” The squire reassured but Robin only looked at her as if she had grown two– no, three heads. Xipe help her, please.
“ It’s— It’s a lion. ” She stated, voice quivering as the lion got closer. The golden eyes were solely focused on her. She swore Sparkle’s smile turned slightly mischievous.
“ It’s alright, Your Highness! ” The squire said with a gleeful cheer. Robin grimaced as the lion stepped once more, so close it was impossible for Robin to fight back if it decided the Halovian was a worthy snack. She held out a hesitant hand, focusing on the lion’s graceful harmony.
“ Good, n-nice kitty? ” She chuckled shakily as the lion sniffed her hand. If the lion decided she was worthwhile to be a snack, Robin might always accept it. Instead, against all odds, the lion brushed its face against her hand before fully committing to the affection.
Slightly surprised by the gesture, Robin stiffly moved her hand and the lion chased after it. Seeing the weird but oddly nice sight of an affectionate lion, Robin started brushing its beautiful mane. Her fingers glided through the fur, it felt like she was touching the cloud. She marveled at the beautiful feline, drinking up the obviously happy harmony.
“ You’re a gorgeous one, ” She commented softly, humming as the lion huffed in response. That elicited a soft laugh from the Halovian. Boldly, Robin leaned in to place a small kiss on the side of the lion’s head. The creature jerked in response, as if aware of her actions.
All the while, Sparkle watched with a smile and wide eyes.
“ Whose lion is this? ” The princess questioned the squire. Sparkle seamlessly snapped back into reality, filing that thought in the back of her mind.
“ This is Sam, Her Highness Firefly’s familiar. ” Sparkle informed as the lion blinked slowly at her words. The lion was practically glued to Robin. Robin’s eyes widened at the information, “ A familiar… ”
She seemed a bit contemplative at the information but shook her head before any of it could be elaborated. Her eyes softened, “ Crown Princess Firefly has amazing companions. ” She commented, with nothing behind her words. Sparkle nodded in contentment.
Sparkle looked back at her watch, “ Ah, Your Highness, it seems our time will have to be cut short. You have dinner with Her Highness. ”
Robin flinched, “ I have a what with who ? ”
Sparkle’s smile was a little too bright.
Robin sweatdropped as she stared at her food, a common smile plastered on her face. Crown Princess Firefly was busy with her own, a neutral expression she wore. Robin still wasn’t afraid to admit she looked absolutely regal in her military clothing.
Banish the thought, Robin von Oak.
The Halovian was still wondering about the sudden dinner together. To her knowledge, the both of them had meals in different places. She could not think of a good reason why Crown Princess Firefly would elicit a dinner together.
The room was awfully quiet, saved for the clinking of their utensils as the two royals ate. None exchanged any words. While Robin had stolen discreet glances, she stopped doing so in turn to focus on the food. It made her smile, the food here was always good.
Looking up, Robin stopped herself from twitching when she saw Crown Princess Firefly looking at her. Even though she was unknown to the reason why, Crown Princess Firefly’s eyes were a beautiful sight. It was like drowning in a pool of sunset.
Robin waved a hesitant hand, “ Your Highness? ” She called out softly. Firefly blinked before she snapped out of her daze, eyes broadening for a fraction before her neutral expression returned.
The Crown Princess turned away and Robin focused back on her plate. Fortunately, the chefs were bringing out the desserts.
“ …How have you been? ” The Crown Princess suddenly asked and Robin had stopped herself from dropping her spoon. Firefly didn’t seem to think too much of the question, blinking at her. It was a weird feeling for Robin.
“ I have… been good? The palace is very accommodating and I’ve been enjoying my time here, thank you to Your Highness’ consideration. ” Robin answered, flawless yet unsure. Firefly twitched at her words but showed no other reaction.
“ Is there anything you’re in need of? ” Crown Princess Firefly asked again. Robin shook her head, “ Nothing of such, Your Highness. ”
Robin wondered if she should just stab herself with her fork. There’s a flicker of another emotion on Firefly’s face as her eyebrows furrowed, her dessert untouched since the beginning. The Crown Princess nodded, expression relaxing.
“ Inform my squire if you’re in need of anything. Sparkle will handle it on my behalf. ” Firefly stated, sunset eyes no longer meeting Robin’s emerald hues. With that, she excused herself from the table. Robin hummed, dinner wasn’t as bad as she thought. Although she was confused with the entire conversation.
Sparkle was quick to catch up with the Crown Princess, a knowing and teasing look on her face. Firefly kept up her pace, confused and unsure as to why the squire was so demanding of her attention.
“ What is it with you? ” The princess questioned bluntly, cringing slightly at her words. Sparkle took no offense to it, only covering her mouth with her hand as she giggled quietly. The squire leaned back, “ Nothing. I just found it funny, that’s all. ”
Firefly sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose, she can't ever figure out what goes on in Sparkle’s head. Better not to even try. The squire always had the knack to annoy her whenever.
“ I’m sureeee the entire castle would be happy to hear the news that you and Her Highness Robin had dinner together. ” Sparkle giggled with a singsong tone, gaining a confused glare from Firefly.
“ You haven’t heard? The entire place had been singing on about how you and Her Highness Robin won’t need to hide your love for each other anymo— ”
“ I’m sorry, what?! ”
Sparkle cackled.
Robin admitted that she was quite worried. The letters she had written and sent to her brother had gone unanswered. It could be that things had been incredibly busy at Penacony but Robin was saddened at the lack of response. Instead, she had received a letter from Misha.
Dearest sister,
I hope this letter reaches you in safe health.
It’s been quite the time since I’ve seen you. I am not shy to admit that it has been less cheerful since your departure. Golden Hour is flourishing on its own but without your presence, it felt like an important thing was taken away. And some people have gotten a bit too bold these days. I wish I could knock them out myself without worrying about my image. What a pain in the neck.
I’m ranting, aren’t I? I am doing well, if that’s what you’re asking. I’ve recently acquired a new series of tales to read. I’d love to share it with you but that would make this letter longer than necessary.
Oh, winter is also coming. Although it seemed that the bears already woken up from their slumbers and had been wondering about. I hope they don’t get any closer, bears are kind of scary.
This isn’t the last of my letter, so write back when you can.
Sincerely,
Misha.
P.S. The ravens have been crowing too much and Sunday doesn’t seem to notice. There has been concern of the envoys, please be cautious.
Robin’s eyes softened as she read the letter. It seemed that Misha was doing well, subsequently so was the Golden Hour. She had worries but knew that her younger brother would be able to handle himself. The ache in her heart grew still, missing the warmth of her home and kin.
Although a part of the letter had her intrigued. There’s a heavy feeling on her chest as Robin let herself yearn for her home. There was a more important point to look at.
Penacony do not have bears.
The message of the ravens however told her more than she needed. Something spiked in Robin, a bitter after taste in her mouth. The pounding ache in her head returned for a moment, whispers of unfamiliar words burrowing itself deep in her mind like a dying flower. She just hoped Sunday would notice it soon.
( No matter how futile she felt about that thought. )
As she drank the rest of her tea, the door creaked open suddenly. Sparkle stepped in swiftly, expression torn between slight annoyance and amused. The latter took over as she greeted Robin.
“ Princess Firefly is on her way to see you, ” Sparkle informed, looking somewhat amused of all things. Robin couldn’t help but raise her eyebrow. Crown Princess Firefly was coming to see her ?
Robin tilted her head, “ On what occasion? ”
Sparkle grimaced, “ Not a good one. ”
Robin tensed in her spot as the door swung open, thundering steps echoing through the room. She met sunset eyes burning furious like a forest fire, ashes clouding the sky and a scowl apparent on her face. Sparkle winced and Robin couldn't help but agreed.
“ Robin von Oak! ”
Alarms ringing like crashing waves, Robin stood up from her seat, eyeing the other woman warily as Firefly stalked forward. It’s now that Robin felt like a prey under the harsh eyes of a predator.
“ Where were you? You were summoned for the council an hour ago! ” Firefly hissed out.
Summoned? What ?
“ I’m not sure what you are talking about, Your Highness. ” The Halovian frowned, harmonies running like blood in her ears.
Firefly’s lips pulled back into a scowled, “ You were specifically summoned to the council in discussion of the current state of affairs regarding our enemies. It’s your duty. ” She emphasized, eyes glaring with so much fire that it scorched Robin. Something thumped in her and Robin couldn't help but let it echo.
“ Forgive me Your Highness, but I was not informed of such nor was any message sent to me. The last time I was summoned, I was turned away without reasons so I do not see how this is my fault. ” Robin hated being petty nor was she ever the type of person to bring up old acts, but Firefly’s words pushed the wrong button on her.
She had done many things to be civil with the Crown Princess but it hadn’t seen like it had any effect. The dinner might have been something but Robin was very much doubting.
“ You weren’t needed because you know nothing of Glamoth. ” Firefly reasoned and Robin for once- pardon her words -think that was bullshit.
Something burnt inside her, boiling her so uncomfortably but Robin can’t control herself as her harmonies screeched against her ears.
“ Bold words of yours, Crown Princess Firefly of Glamoth. ” She gritted out. Firefly’s eyes steeled. Her eyes are guarded and wary because for all that is worth, Robin could easily point out the amount of destruction Glamoth had caused Penacony.
But she understood Firefly’s actions and reasons, even if it annoyed her. The Halovian sighed, the tension escaping her shoulders as she relented.
“ I see. Forgive me then, Your Highness. I will heed my duties when it is informed to me. ” Robin emphasized, soft emerald giving in. Something overtook Firefly’s feature as she glanced at Sparkle. It seemed like there was some sort of mental telepathy between them that it made Robin question what exactly was their relationship.
Sparkle raised an eyebrow, “ I was also not informed of anything or else I would have told Her Highness Robin. ” The squire shrugged but there was a sharp look in her eyes.
Firefly pinched the bridge of her nose, “ I clearly remember telling one of your servants to inform you. ”
Robin’s eyebrows furrowed, “ Not a servant of mine spoke of anything. ” Robin met Sparkle’s gaze as the same thought crossed their mind.
“ There must have been a misunderstanding of relaying information. ” Sparkle crossed her arms and something flickered upon Firefly’s expression. Guilt ? Robin can’t quite pinpoint it.
The Crown Princess sighed, waving a hand dismissively. “ Please heed your summoning to the council, next time. ” She hissed out, not quite meeting Robin’s eyes. She didn’t notice Sparkle face-palming at her words.
True to her words, Robin did just exactly that the next time. She arrived earlier than everyone and had taken a seat, poised and confident in her ability. She was nervous, of course. Robin wasn’t as charismatic as her brother nor is she as smart but she had confidence in her abilities.
As the nobles started appearing, none of them was able to hide their surprise at seeing her. The only confusing difference was that Crown Princess Firefly had not made an appearance.
“ Her Highness Firefly has been summoned to the battlefield, ” was all one of the servants answered. Robin, etched with deep skepticism and confusion, was forced to bury the thought as the council meeting began.
The meeting went better than she expected. Many of what was spoken about she had read from the endless amount of scrolls and surveys in the library. It paid off well, thankfully. The nobles were willing to listen to her, which was more than enough for Robin.
When the topic changed to their situation regarding the port and seaside, it’s where Robin specialized in. She was no expert but Penacony were known for high cliffs and low water, they made use of the sea and rivers to their advantage. Robin was more than familiar with the issues.
While the nobles of Glamoth were discussing
Belobog’s unexplained movements, Robin took a break to rest her voice, soothing her harmonies. It was then the harmonies started to buzz, like an engine of a steam ship. It started slow before it grew, tearing the air apart. Alarms went off in her head as Robin saw a glimmer of steel.
She didn’t know whether Sparkle or the knife was faster.
All she could feel was a stinging pain somewhere before it exploded, hissing and boiling her in an unbearable way. It clawed upon her skin, crawling into her blood— burning, burning, burning her. The harmonies screeched and Robin could not hear, hear, hear, hear–
She felt unbearably hot, like the sun was on her. Her lungs burnt, air evaporating into nothingness. Her skin itched and Robin thought of clawing herself open because it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, please, please, please, please, p le a se —
Sparkle knew she had slacked when the knife reached Princess Robin first. It’s impressive how the Princess moved fast enough to avert it but it doesn't stop the blade from cutting her. A clean cut, blood slowly streaming out.
That was fine, she could stop that.
What she could not stop was how Princess Robin spasmed and screamed, hands clawing at her skin. The other nobles were fast on their feet, Duchess Kafka immediately hounding the assailant who attempted to escape. General Blade slammed the assassin to the ground, shoving a piece of cloth inside his mouth. Sparkle presumed it was to stop him from biting his tongue.
Sparkle noticed how the injured wound was turning purple and she could only grimace. Poison. Deliberate assassination. This was going to raise hell for them.
“ Call for the Alchemist and Healers— NOW! ” Sparkle yelled. Oh, Firefly was going to be pissed. And so was she, honestly.
The interrogation went as well as it could go. General Blade was given the rights and permission to do so along with Sparkle’s supervision. What they got was less than favorable.
“ Either this is a ploy from one of the nobles looking to stake revenge against Penacony’s representative or this is an attempt from the other side. ” General Blade grumbled out, expression displeased. Sparkle hummed, storing that thought. Even if it was a ploy from Penacony, why hurt their own royalty? What could they possibly gain from that?
“ Either way, I presumed Her Highness was not pleased with this? ”
Sparkle looked at him weirdly, “ Oh, she would be pissed. It’s just on the fact I haven't informed her. ” It was General Blade’s turn to look at her weirdly.
“ Why haven’t you— ”
“ Ahh, ahh! That’s a story for another day. It’ll be alright, Her Highness is coming back today. ” The squire waved it off, not worried in the slightest. The General just stared at her, absolutely not knowing what to think of this squire.
The noble just sighed in the end, “ Suit yourself. I will excuse myself now, the battlefield waits for no one. ” With that, he left. Sparkle waved him goodbye, even if he couldn't see it. Turning around, she entered the room Robin was situated in.
Maestro Elio greeted her with a smile and she didn't have to ask for him to tell her. “ Her condition has stabilized. We have gotten rid of the poison and stopped the bleeding but the side effects will have to naturally disappear. ” The Maestro explained.
“ What type of poison? I couldn't discern it properly nor did the culprit spit anything out regarding the substance. ”
The Maestro hummed, “ From the looks of it, mayhaps it is Api. The unbearable burning sensation the victim would feel coupled with the skin turning purple. Its side effects are one of the worst. And yet, what a curious choice. ”
The Maestro chuckled before waving his hand in dismissal, “ Nonetheless, the Princess’ condition has stabilized and she is out of the danger zone. Mayhaps she would awake tonight or after dawn. ”
Robin’s condition was still… painful at the least. Her breathing was ragged and face twisted in pain. Sparkle sighed in resignation. Maestro Elio gave her a look of encouragement before excusing himself due to other matters. Now, she has to wait for Firefly’s arrival.
It took for the moonlight to come out when Crown Princess Firefly arrived at the palace. The Princess did not notice anything different in particular, only noting the mild buzzing that had occupied her mind.
Sparkle greeted her first and foremost, face oddly firm and serious. It’s a weird look to see on the otherwise mischievous girl. Firefly paused.
“ An attempt of assassination was made this morning, ”
Firefly’s blood went cold, like the freezing ice bristling under the mountains. It’s the same feeling she had gotten at some point in the past— where red shouldn't be cold and it covered her entire being.
“ Her Highness Robin’s condition has— Firefly? ” The call of her name spared her from her spiraling thoughts. Firefly swallowed, the bitter taste on her tongue not quite going away.
She cleared her throat, “ You were saying? ”
Sparkle raised an eyebrow, a grin dancing upon her lips but she didn’t push further. “ Her Highness Robin’s condition is fine so far so there’s a big chance she will wake up this night or after dawn. ”
Firefly nodded, “ That’s– That’s good, then. What’s of the culprit? ” Something inside her burns.
“ Still in the dungeon. ”
“ Good. Is- Is now a good time to do it? ”
Sparkle gave a questioning noise, “ Do what? ”
Firefly cleared her throat, ignoring the heat pooling at her face. If Sparkle noticed, she might as well have done a very good thought of showing it, judging by her teasing smile.
The Crown Princess visibly groaned, “ To visit my– Princess Robin. ”
“ You’re married to her, Firefly. ”
“ Thank you for pointing out the obvious, Sparkle. ”
The squire didn’t do much other than cackle at the resignation in her voice. Firefly really did not need to be reminded of her and Robin's current status. If it weren’t for their current situation, Firefly would not have gone through with it.
“ Give her a chance, Firefly. Stop being so hostile. ”
Firefly exhaled, “ I am– I am not being hostile. There is just no reason for me to have feelings for her. ”
Sparkle snickered and shook her head, “ It’s been years, things are different now. ”
Firefly didn't reply, only looking down at her hand and she could still see the red, red, red, red soaking her hand through her gloves. She shut her eyes and shook her head.
“ How was the council meeting? ” She asked instead. Sparkle, even when knowing of Firefly’s turmoil and worries, didn't push further. She knew that the Crown Princess was a stubborn type, words alone would never get through her.
“ It went well. Her Highness Robin showed a great deal of cooperation as well as knowledge when it came to the matters of economics and domestic issues. The nobles seemed satisfied. ”
Firefly raised an eyebrow, “ That’s a bit surprising. ”
“ You should read the solution and ideas she wrote for Dame Jade. It’s quite a read and you would be surprised to see Dame Jade smile. ” Sparkle suggested with her usual giggle, that mischievous look returning to her eyes.
Firefly sighed, trying hard to keep out the image of soft emerald from her mind. It’s not really working.
It’s when dawn answered that Robin woke up from her slumber. The stinging, burning pain by her neck hadn’t subsided but it was bearable. Robin drew in a shaky breath as she sat up, clinging to the harmonies trying to sooth her. She’s somehow aware it was dawn, her mind a buzz of howling winds and thundering rain.
The door creaked open, startling the Halovian. Crown Princess Firefly entered silently, only noticing her when she met her gaze. It’s a surprise when Crown Princess Firefly exhaled in relief.
“ Thank the Aeons you’re awake. ” The Crown Princess said softly, Robin responding with a shaky smile.
Firefly then pursed her lips, flexing her hand as if she was apprehensive. She seemed to be thinking.
“ I apologize that you were harmed in my own palace. I heard that the culprit was one of the maids made to serve you. I should have been more vigilant and– and I should have been there to stop it. ” Firefly started, voice low and drowned with so much guilt. The grimace on her face showed that she was struggling with her words and Robin couldn't help but sympathize.
“ It’s fine, Your Highness. You couldn't have known, no one did really. The culprit has been caught and I’m well alive. It's something that has happened, we should put it past us. ” Robin reassured, relief washing over her when Princess Firefly nodded as the tension left her shoulders. She did not want to flame more fire over their already strained relationship, Robin was just relieved that they came to an understanding.
“ You… I’ve misjudged you. ” Princess Firefly started, her eyes not quite meeting Robin’s. The Halovian wasn’t even sure she heard that correctly.
“ Sorry? ”
Firefly clenched her jaw, “ I’ve misjudged you. You’re more than what I thought. I presumed that you only heeded your duties because you are my wife. But I read the plans you wrote out for Dame Jade and it's… it’s more than what I expected. ”
Robin raised an eyebrow, stifling a bitter laugh in her throat. “ Well, I wouldn't sit around and look pretty like a trophy. ”
Crown Princess Firefly seemed to flinch at her words, eyes narrowing as she took a deep breath. “ You- You’re not a trophy. ”
Robin nodded, “ I am not saying I am, but there were situations that felt like it. I understand your position and I might be lacking in certain aspects, ” Robin didn’t mention nor ask whether Crown Princess Firefly ever expected someone else instead of her.
“ But I do not slack when it comes to my duties. I have governed Penacony alongside my siblings, it has always been just us. ”
Then, Crown Princess Firefly continued in a low voice, “ And it has always been me. ”
The room fell silent.
Robin’s eyes softened as she listened to Princess Firefly’s harmony. She pushed her harmonies to soothe the ache in her heart, even if Princess Firefly could not feel it. Non-Halovians couldn’t truly discern harmonies, after all.
Robin’s heart ached for Princess Firefly. For all she knew, the Princess was an only child who was left to govern the kingdom after the early passing of her sires. Robin couldn't even begin to imagine the loneliness she must have felt, with no one by her side and so many people counting on her. Such small shoulders bearing the fate of an entire nation.
Even for Robin, she had Sunday and Misha to help her if anything went wrong. Princess Firefly had none. If it was Robin, she might have gone a little insane in some parts of her mind with the absence of her siblings. Robin shook away her thoughts, now wasn’t the time to lament about ‘what ifs.’
“ Princess, ” It’s a gentle call, Firefly didn't need to listen but she did anyway– meeting emerald green filled so much care, understanding and —
I can not, Firefly reminded herself.
“ It’s not easy to let things go, especially the pain we have caused each other for a feud that started even before our lifetime. But I hope this could be the start for us to find a middle ground. ” Her voice was unbearably soft, unlocking a certain memory inside Firefly. For a moment, something bloomed in her but it was squashed down as quickly as it came.
She brought up a hand to squeeze her temples, “ It’s not as easy. Some decisions were hard to make and all of it was for the sake of my kingdom. Even if it comes at the cost of others. ”
“ Such is for the ruler. ” Robin’s response was barely audible but it struck a chord in Firefly. The silence between was still present but it's a different one now. It’s more… neutral, senseless in a way that they don’t mind.
“ Thank you, for understanding. ” Princess Firefly stated out hesitantly, quickly leaving with her red cloak swayed by her side. Robin couldn't stop the chuckle escaping her lips.
Maybe they could work this out after all.
It was lunch when Robin received another letter from Misha, handed by Sparkle who (unapologetically) interrupted her lunch with Princess Firefly. The latter didn’t do as much as giving Sparkle an accusatory glance.
The letter felt heavy in her for some reason and Robin felt her guts twist uneasily.
Dearest sister,
I hope this letter reaches you.
The Golden Hour has been operating fine, if it could quell any of your worries. Some merchants have gotten a bit bold with their trades and they severely look down on me. Oh, if I was given the chance I would stub their toes in their food and make them eat it. Aeons, give me patience.
The bears seemed to have been wondering about, it’s getting a little worrying now. They're leaving behind so many scratches on the trees, it’s not looking as pretty anymore.
And the ravens too. They have been flying overhead, leaving so many bird poops it's making my sense of smell vanish. It seemed like one landed on someone, which is horrifying. They are so loud I wonder how others don’t hear it; even Sunday. I think we should do something about them. Ravens travel quite far and they’re tricky in many ways, you should be careful, Robin.
It seems I’ve been ranting too much now. I’m glad you are safe and sound; do send my greeting to Crown Princess Firefly. As much as she has stolen you from our house, she is my sister-in-law.
Please be careful. And write back when you can.
Sincerely,
Misha
Robin exhaled heavily as she finished reading the letter. Princess Firefly glanced at her quietly. The information Misha had written made her head spin. It’s no wonder why she had never gotten a response from Sunday— he might have never even gotten a letter.
She thought it would be fine, but it seemed like the ravens are trying to hound everything with her absence.
“ I have something to tell you. ” She breathed out, eyebrows furrowed with an expression Princess Firefly hadn’t seen. Then Robin seemed to pause, “ Oh, is this a good time? ”
Princess Firefly waved a hand, “ It’s alright, it seems important. ”
Robin nodded at her response, mustering a smile as she thought of her words. “ There have been signs of an active Belobog’s movement near the northern border of Penacony. ”
Princess Firefly halted, eyes growing sharper as she regarded Robin with a critical look. “ That is… quite an information. Is it really true? ”
Robin understood her skepticism. “ Yes, my younger brother Misha spoke of it in his letters. ”
“ Can we really trust his words? ”
Something in Robin bristled but she blew it down, “ Yes. Misha wouldn't lie about such a thing. I know his hand writings and the way he coded his words. He spoke of bears and we know Belobog is known for their bear insignias. ”
Princess Firefly hummed in thought, eyebrows furrowed as she processed the information. Then she nodded, “ What are their movements? ”
Robin exhaled, “ From what Misha has said, it seems like they are marching alongside the northern border of Penacony. ”
“ Marching? Just marching? Nothing else? Why would they do so? ” The confusion was palpable in Firefly’s voice. Robin shook her head, “ I do not know. Misha only spoke of their constant marching along the border but there hasn’t been any actions taken so far. ”
Princess Firefly then gazed at her for a few seconds before her eyes narrowed, “ There's more. ” Somehow, it’s not said accusingly– more like a statement. Robin grimaced.
“ It’s… nothing to worry about. ”
Firefly stayed silent for a moment, not used to hearing such resignation from the Halovian. “ I know we don't have the best relationship and even only now we’re civil with each other, ” She started, wondering why she could never look at those emerald eyes. Something in her echoed and hoped but it was always crushed by her reality.
“ But if you need anything, just ask for it. Use it to your needs. After all, what's mine is also yours. ”
I can't, Firefly echoed to herself like a prayer, I can’t ever look at her like that.
Robin stared at her and for a moment, Firefly wondered if she took it a bit too far. Despite their marriage status, it was not wrong to say they were only married in name. But then a beautiful smile blossomed on Robin’s face as she laughed and Firefly felt like the air had been knocked out of her lungs.
She took all of her breath away.
I can’t, some parts of her mind echoed.
And yet, it was drowned out by Robin’s laughter.
“ Request of a survey? ” Princess Firefly questioned after hearing Robin’s words. The Halovian nodded, her wings fluttering as she smiled.
“ Dame Jade requested a personal survey of the land to build and upgrade the water wheels. She wanted to have a conversation with me regarding future developments. ” Robin stated as she sat down, brushing the feather of her wings. Firefly wondered if it was as soft as it looked.
“ Well, I don’t see why not. I’ll draft up an official response, just in case there might be misunderstandings. ” Princess Firefly nodded before looking over to the pile of papers on her desk.
She grimaced, “ … After I finish all of this. ”
Robin laughed, and again– Firefly found herself focusing on it, giving her full attention when the Halovian spoke. Robin stood up from her seat, placing her hands on the desk as she leaned in with the same mischievous look she would see in Sparkle.
“ Would you like me to help? ”
Princess Firefly stared at her blankly, as if unable to process her thoughts. Robin could see the way the cogs in her head stuttered for a moment.
Firefly blinked, “ Would you? ” She asked with a considerable amount of confusion. That only made Robin giggle even more, where she found that confusion admirably cute. She leaned in a bit more, so caught up in the teasing none of them realized how close they were.
Then the door opened.
“ Hey, I just got a— ” Sparkle stopped herself as she looked at the two. Firefly and Robin turned to her before backing away with a yelp (from Robin) once they realized their position.
“ Aww, I should have waited five more minutes. ” The squire whined.
“ Sparkle. ”
“ Yeah? ”
“ Shut up. ”
Princess Firefly cleared her throat once she thoroughly berated Sparkle on the etiquette of knocking the door. She reluctantly turned to the squire, who still had that stupid grin on her face.
“ You were saying? ”
Sparkle perked up, “ Oh, nothing too important! ” She said innocently before giving Firefly a knowing look. The latter grumbled something.
Robin couldn’t but question what their relationship was, considering the very close dynamic they have. It felt awkward to ask and Robin might be invading on something personal so she pushed the thoughts away.
“ Also, I’ve heard Her Highness Robin has a survey to do? Don’t you worry, I will be accompanying her and Dame Jade! ” The squire said proudly, already grabbing onto Robin’s arm. The Halovian let out a confused hum.
“ Wait, hold your horses— ” Firefly tried but the two were already out the door before she could even say a word.
“ Is that okay? To just leave Princess Firefly like that? ” Robin sweatdropped as she and Sparkle mounted their horses. Sparkle just shrugged, “ It’ll be alright. Firefly has a lot of work to go through. ”
Robin blinked, “ Are you her lover or something? ”
Sparkle snapped her head towards her, her face twisted in disgust that Robin didn’t need to be told anything else. “ Ew. ” The squire whispered before shivering.
Robin smiled apologetically, “ Ah, that was uncouth of me. It's just that you two seemed really close with each other that I wonder what your relationship is with her. Ah, don't worry! I won’t judge, of course. It’s not really my business. ”
Sparkle grinned, “ While I would love to talk about it, it’s a bit personal and serious so I recommend you ask Firefly about it. You’re her wife after all, you deserved to hear it from her. But just so you know, Firefly and I do not have that sort of relationship. That’s just– eugh. ” The squire blanched comically.
Robin hummed along, storing the thought for another time.
“ Why were you asking? ”
Robin hummed in question. Sparkle looked at her with a curious look. “ Why did you ask? ”
“ I was… curious? ” The Halovian said hesitantly.
“ Just that? Really? ”
Robin frowned, “ Is there something else? ”
Sparkle giggled, “ I thought you’d be a little jealous. ”
Oh.
Sparkle didn’t continue any further as her horse sped up, leaving Robin behind to think of her words.
The meeting and survey with Dame Jade was enjoyable enough. The older woman was quick and precise with her guide, never beating around the bush as they surveyed the state of the constructs.
By the time they arrived back at the palace, Princess Firefly was still in the meeting room, expression crunched in annoyance as Sparkle grinned. The Halovian princess giggled as she smiled at the Crown Princess. Robin headed to her room to get a change of clothes while the other two sat through a mountain of papers.
Well, only Firefly. Sparkle was just there to annoy her.
“ You really seem to like her now. ”
Firefly froze at her words, a blank look resting on her face now. She moved without any response, ignoring the implications of those words. Her heart felt heavy.
“ I don't. Not in that way. ” Firefly said dismissively, a thousand looks in her eyes that Sparkle could easily see through. Even after all these years, Firefly clinged onto that moment– so small and fleeting but it was what kept the Crown Princess alive all these time.
It felt sad, seeing her refuse to let go of an old memory.
“ Well, I know but that doesn't— ”
“ You know well I’m in love with someone else, Sparkle. ” Firefly cut off, her face solemn and downcasted.
Her words rang true in her ears, something she had told herself over and over. Till this day, she longed for that same breeze by the cliff as she set eyes on her first love. Her younger self who was so unfit, so battered, so unloved, so worthless— found something to live for.
But even so, her heart felt heavy.
There was bile in her throat, “ I can’t love her. I can’t love Robin. ”
It felt like poison was in her mouth.
“ What are even the chances of you meeting your first love? ” Sparkle questions, leaning on the table.
Firefly, truthfully, didn’t know how to answer that. She read it in books, saw it in countless plays— how lovers were destined to find a way back to each other, even if the Aeons separated them. Even if the world was against them. Even if they were each others’ demise.
She wondered if hers would ever be like that.
Robin sat down on the bench, sighing to herself as she breathed in the harmonies sung by the roots of life. They responded to her in tandem, drinking her harmonies like bees to pollen. She let herself relax, slouching slightly. She had taken a break after hours of sitting down and going through so many papers.
Her eyes were growing as she let the harmonies sing her to sleep. It would be nice to take a nap, especially after being stuck in the office all day. It seemed like a good day, the sun and clouds up high in the sky. But even with all that, emerald eyes stayed open.
All the thoughts seemed to just piled up, like a mountain of bones and ashes in a wasteland. Spiraling thoughts of an ocean, forming a whirlpool so deep Robin couldn’t seem to escape it.
Feeling the itch on her skin, Robin loosen the strap of her clothes– opening the cloth to reveal back. Her wings popped out with a flourish of feathers, harmonies surrounding it.
“ I didn't know you knew of this garden. ” A voice alerted her from behind. Princess Firefly stood not far with a look of surprise, eyes moving to her wings– unconsciously Robin began to fidget. before it melted into a content look. Robin was quiet for a moment.
“ Sparkle showed me a few weeks ago. It’s beautiful. ” She whispered in response, fingers gracing one of the flowers– as if afraid a touch would break it apart. Firefly hummed, taking a seat next to her. She’s careful to set a space between them and Robin could tell she’s not trying to stare at her wings. The Halovian wasn’t going to blame her for it, it’s rare to ever see a Halovian’s wing.
“ It is. My mother took great care of it. ” Her voice was soft. Softer than Robin ever heard. There's a value of vulnerability as Firefly stared into the open, not quite smiling– but she could tell the Crown Princess was at peace. Firefly looked beautiful in peace. It made her feel like an intruder, in such a personal and private space.
“ Ah, I also met your familiar. ”
Firefly blinked, “ You’ve met Sam? That's… interesting. Usually they’re wary around strangers. ” The Crown Princess turned back to the flowers, a deep breath leaving her.
“ When my mother passed away, no one bothered to take care of it. So, I did. ” The Princess held out a hand as a lone breeze greeted them, petals raining for them, swaying along the beats of the wind.
“ Your mother sounds like a lovely person. ” Robin said as a petal fell into her palm. So small, so fragile, so insignificant and yet– so beautiful.
It’s Firefly’s turn to laugh, her eyes crested and a small smile on her face. She’s truly the most beautiful person Robin had ever seen. The heavy ache in her chest didn’t leave.
“ I don't really remember her. But I think if she was here, she would have gotten along with you. ” Firefly’s smile lived up to her name. So small, so fragile, so insignificant—
So beautiful.
Oh.
Her breath hitched.
It’s so bad. Her heart and lungs felt they were going to burst.
“ If she was anything like you, we would. ” There's sand in her throat. She can’t speak but the harmonies force her to. Robin felt like she was going to drown but– oh does she love it.
Firefly seemed to flinch for a split second before she let out a strained laughter. The smile was still on her but it's more solemn, resigned, and accepting. It’s an expression she has never seen on the princess and a part of Robin was afraid she would be swallowed so deep, she would forget a way to get back out.
Maybe she preferred that.
Robin didn't know anything about Firefly. It’s mutual. It’s only a recent development that they started speaking to each other. But the blooming flowers wrapping its roots around her heart did not show mercy for her.
Her wings fluttered for a moment and that in turn gained Firefly’s attention.
“ Your wings are beautiful. ” Those four words felt like they could stab Robin in all of her limbs and she would welcome them with open arms. Oh, she was done for.
“ I’ve been told that. ” Her laugh sounded fake to her ears, an attempt to hide the desert in her throat. “ It’s been a while since I’ve let them out. ” She said as she let her wings stretched, Firefly marveling at the appendage. Usually, Halovians would never let their other wings out in front of strangers– that was only for trusted ones.
But Robin was in so much trouble now.
Firefly stared with wide eyes, like a child seeing their favorite candy. Robin laughed at her expression, seeing how heat pooled at Firefly’s cheeks. She thought it was a nice color on Firefly.
“ You can touch it. ” She closed one eye, moving her wings closer. Firefly seemed startled at the invitation, hesitant and unsure how to act. She looked at Robin once more and with an encouraging smile from the Halovian, the Princess took off her glove to brush a hesitant touch on her feather.
Despite the callouses, marks, and scars littering Firefly’s hand– her touch was gentle. Robin’s heart soared. Firefly’s harmony seemed to sing in content and happiness, her inner soul singing louder than ever. It made Robin happy– so undeniably happy.
That wide eye look, the smile, the expression, it made her so happy. Like a crashing waterfall against a glass, pieces drowning in epiphany. Robin groaned as a pounding ache coursed through her head. Firefly looked at her in concern.
“ It’s alright, just a recurring headache. ” The Halovian laughed it off, even when Firefly did not look convinced whatsoever.
Robin did not stop Firefly from continuing her handwork, massaging the feathers. It tickled her but Robin let Firefly indulge in the myriads of colors reflecting off her wings, like rainbows in the skies.
She let the harmonies guide her, the words rolling off her tongue so easily.
( When midnight strikes, )
The dull ache in her head returned but Robin masked it with layers of harmonies, drowning in a sea of serendipity. The ache seemed to travel to her heart, where the heat wrenched her being apart. It’s so unbearable but love was like water— always there, always existing, always present. Even in a world full of hate and indifference, love would crawl its way up to the skies.
( I finally realized, )
Robin has always loved. But at what point does love become so painful? Was it when her brother cried? Was it when her mother and father left without a goodbye? Was it when she cried, wishing for a better present?
( I just want you to say, )
She sympathized with every harmony she heard, as they were songs sung for their souls– very few who could listen, very few who could understand.
She wondered why she fell in love with Firefly. When did Crown Princess Firefly become Firefly to her?
Robin did notice how Firefly had stopped her work.
( Even when this moment has come to pass, )
But it hurts. It hurts so much.
( We’ll never forget it all night.)
Because she can’t have Firefly.
The harmonies came to a screech as Firefly stood up abruptly. Robin was startled, eyes wide in confusion as Firefly turned away. Her shoulders shook slightly before Firefly trudged away, with no words— her harmony crashing against the wind with so much grief.
And Robin told herself,
Firefly is not hers.
And she would never be Firefly’s.
As the light had already shone for someone else.
You’ve become my universe, a never ending circle.
The daunting message came knocking like a boulder against an weary wall.
Robin was occupying herself with some scrolls and surveys of other issues, hoping it would distract herself from her train wreck of a thought. She hadn’t seen Firefly since that day, wondering if they were back to square one. Maybe Firefly had figured out that Robin loved her in ways that the former couldn't.
Her thoughts were pulled apart when thundering steps echoed through the hall. The double door crashed open, a messenger stumbling in. A Penacony messenger.
“ Your Highness Robin! I bring bad news! ”
Something in Robin quivered as she prayed, prayed, prayed, prayed —
“ Golden Hour is under siege! The Xianzhou Alliance has attacked! ”
Her blood ran cold.
There’s a buzz in her ears and before she realized it, Robin was already out the door. Dear Xipe, thank god she decided to wear a suit today. She raced down the hall, pacing her ways to the stable.
Misha.
“ Rio, inform Sir Gallagher and his troops to move out at once! ” The maid yelped but heeded the demand with no problem. She’s not a fighter nor was she strong in any way but Robin would be able to push through with her harmonies. She hated weaponizing her harmonies and resonance but Golden Hour was under attack and Misha .
Misha was in danger.
“ Robin, wait! ” Robin heard the call of her name as she pulled out her assigned horse from his canter. Firefly ran up to her, with Sparkle and General Blade following. There’s the familiar look of fury in Firefly’s eyes.
But now it’s filled with something else.
“ What are you doing? ” Firefly questioned, tone scalding hot but Robin didn’t have the time to even react to it.
“ Golden Hour is under attack, I have to go— ”
“ Don't be ridiculous, ” Firefly hissed.
Something bristled in Robin, like boiling steam over a pool. “ I have to go. Do not stop me. ”
“ Stop and think for a moment! Do not make rash decisions— ”
“ Rash decisions?! My little brother is in danger! ” The yell seemed to catch Firefly off guard as she probably had never heard Robin so angry. All the frustrations had pooled and were spilling over. Her eyes stung with tears.
Firefly regained her bearings, “ I know but we have to come up with a plan before blindly rushing in! ”
“ Firefly, I can’t sit here waiting for a decision to be made when I can make one now. ” Desperation seeped into Robin’s voice and she felt the distant ache when Firefly’s expression twisted. It all was buried under fear and desperation.
“ Your Highness Robin, the troop is ready. ” Sir Gallagher interrupted the moment, bowing slightly at the presence of royalties. Robin gazed at him before averting her eyes to Firefly, who stared at her with something akin to guilt.
Surprisingly, it’s Firefly who gave in first. “ Alright. ”
Robin felt guilt twist into her guts like daggers in her body. Sunset eyes met emerald again, “ On one condition, take General Blade with you. ”
Firefly pulled on her sleeve, pulling her in and so close, so close, so close—
“ Robin von Oak, as your wife, I command you to come back alive. ”
As Robin stared at her wife’s eyes, she could hear the echoing glass shattering deep in her heart.
Why can’t I have you ?
Robin turned away, unshed tears threatening to fall. “ We’re moving now! ”
General Blade doesn’t say a word or complain, wordlessly pulling out a horse from its canter and mounting it.
She doesn't look back as they start their journey, the wind harshly sharp against her skin and her chest so heavy. The thundering gallops filled her ears, the cold clawing at her skin as they rushed against the wind.
Normally, it would take two days and a half for them to arrive but if they speed up and forgone resting, they could arrive at Golden Hour in less than a day. It’s an idea she brought up but was shut down by Sir Gallagher and General Blade.
If they do that, they would run the troops rag before the battlefield. Reluctantly, Robin agreed to taking rest to recuperate morale and energy. It’s Sir Gallagher who noticed her uneasiness– which she wasn’t really hiding.
“ We will arrive there in time, Your Highness. ” The knight had tried to reassure her.
They don’t wait for dawn as their journey continues. By the early morning, Robin finally breathed as she saw the Harvale Mountain, which meant they were not far from Golden Hour.
However, their strides were cut short by the intervention of Xianzhou’s army. Sir Gallagher clicked his tongue, “ It seemed like they expected us. Men, flank! ”
Robin’s wings fluttered as courses of harmonies rang loudly. It screeched against the ears of the Xianzhou’s soldiers, paralyzing and confusing them. General Blade made short work of them.
Golden Hour’s clock stood tall against the ambient sky. The Xianzhou’s soldiers were formidable, their spears and cannon crashing into the battlefield. Robin masked herself with hundreds of harmonies, hoping it would prevent her from seeing the bodies unfortunate to have their stories ended.
Her soldiers seemed to be gaining footing and ground, quickly pushing back the Xianzhou. Sir Gallagher seemed to dove into their army before she heard the loud clang of weapons. There she saw– a gigantic sword, sewn with embers and boiling with the heart of a volcano, clashing onto General’s Blade sword like heaven meeting the earth.
It was nothing short of awe. Even more when General Blade countered the attack so easily, pushing back the assailants and their volcanic claymore. The soldier, clad in their Xianzhou armor was much, much smaller than others but Robin wondered how so much strength existed in such a small existence.
General Blade perked up as wind swept around them, clashing against his own as a tornado approached them. Familiar blue eyes met him. The General brandished his shattered sword.
“ Empress Feixiao. ” He greeted, voice blank and devoid of any emotion.
Robin almost balked.
The Foxian Empress grinned, manic and pleased. “ It’s been a while isn’t it, Yinxing ? ”
General Blade didn’t do as much as his eyes narrowed. “ Unfortunately, I do not go by that name anymore. ”
There was a moment of silence before something shattered. Wind swept around them like a balanced chaos descended by the gods. She heard of the Foxian Empress, someone not to be trifled with, someone with an amazing power that the throne bowed down to her.
“ What a sight, ” Sir Gallagher commented from the side, looking a bit more alive than he usually was. Robin looked around to see all of the soldiers had halted their fighting, retreating to the sides to not get caught up in the warriors’ battle.
The wind roared, only for a single whistle to cut in. Sharp, unphased, and cutting. There were multiple shout of shock as Empress Feixiao pushed General Blade back, the Foxian backing away in response.
“ Behind me! ” The woman commanded as Xianzhou soldiers rallied behind her. Her eyes landed on Robin and the Halovian didn’t flinch at her eyes.
“ Call your troops to retreat. If so, we will also stop. ” Empress Feixiao commanded, glaring blue eyes threatening to burn into Robin’s soul. The sound of battle still roared against her ears, the soldiers working hard to defend Golden Hour.
“ Bold words. ” General Blade scowled and Empress Feixiao met it with her own manic grin. Robin pinched the bridge of her nose. It’s time like this she wished Sunday was here. He was always better at making decisions.
She wished Firefly was here.
She met Sir Gallagher’s eyes and the man nodded, indicating he would follow her words, no matter what the decision was. Her loyalty lies in Penacony, the Golden Hour— The Family.
There's a bitter taste in her mouth. “ Everyone, retreat! ”
Empress Feixiao sent her a grin, less manic and more intrigued. Robin watched as the Xianzhou troop disappeared into the Aslen River connected to the Golden Hour.
The rest of the reinforcement arrived two days after that. Crown Princess Firefly barged into her tent with no hesitation whatsoever, eyes looking at every part of her. Once she discerned there was no life threatening injury, Firefly released the heavy breath she was holding.
Instead, she moved on to glaring at her.
“ You’re lucky you’re my wife or else I would have— ” Firefly didn’t continue her sentence, huffing in frustration as she ran a hand through her hair. Robin thinks she looked undeniably handsome. She also ignores the heat pooling in her chest.
“ I’m sorry. ” Robin apologized, mustering the courage to look Firefly in the eyes. The Crown Princess gazed at her for a moment before sighing in defeat and plopping onto the bed next to her.
“ …No, I understand. I don’t blame you for your previous actions. Family is family. ” Firefly spoke softly and Robin wondered where the heat from that day had gone. Her heart still ached at the painful notion.
“ If it was Sparkle, I… I would have not thought twice and mirrored your actions. ” Firefly admitted, her lips pulled back into a frown. Then her mind paused.
“ Sparkle? ”
Firefly jerked, “ W-Well, yes? Sparkle is… oh, I’ve never told you? ”
Robin shrugged, playing with the hem of her sleeve. “ You can tell me. If you want to. ”
Firefly looked around, making sure no one was there besides them. “ This cannot go out. Seriously, do not tell anyone about this. ”
“ My mouth is sealed. ”
Firefly sighed, looking slightly guilty. “ Sparkle is my half sister. She’s the illegitimate daughter of my mother. ”
Robin nodded, slightly taken aback by the reveal. It was not what she expected. But looking back at it, the signs were obvious.
“ Well, you two do act like siblings. ” She chuckled when Firefly scoffed. “ She only likes to annoy me. ”
“ That’s the sibling rule, isn’t it? ” Firefly sighed at her words. Her expression slowly turned to a solemn one, staring mindlessly at the carpet below them. It’s an expression Robin has come to associate when Firefly was in deep thoughts.
“ Do you miss your siblings? ”
Robin didn’t hesitate, “ Terribly. I haven’t heard from Sunday since the wedding and Misha is under Xianzhou's siege. I am terribly worried. ” The weariness and exhaustion leaked out of her voice, not even her harmonies were strong enough to help.
“ …I missed my siblings too. ” Firefly forced out, so terribly small and low. Robin doesn’t interrupt, only reaching out and taking Firefly’s hand to comfort her. She couldn’t go any further than that.
She’s not mine, her harmonies cried.
“ I had siblings. I don’t remember them as much but I remembered them having the same eyes and hair just like me. I remembered playing with them. I remembered being happy with them. ” Firefly clutched her hand like it was her last lifeline.
“ I remember their names but they mean nothing. I can’t remember their faces. I can’t remember their voices, what they like, what they dislike. I only remember their names. ” The Crown Princess took a shuddering breath as Robin moved closer, bumping their shoulders against one another. Firefly seemed to relax slightly at the contact.
“ Do you know why despite being the only one in line for the throne, I am still not a Queen? ” Firefly questioned, glistening sunset eyes meeting her own. Firefly could still remember that day, where it was so cold. The blade in her hand was cold, the room was cold, the red on her hand was cold, cold, cold, cold, cold—
Robin only shook her head, the lump in her throat so heavy. Even in her exhaustion she could feel Firefly’s harmony crying with so much agony, regret, guilt and grief.
“ It’s because I have to wait for that day. That date, where I killed my own siblings. ”
Silence fell upon them.
Robin couldn't breathe. Once again, the air in her lungs was knocked out. But all she could focus on was Firefly, whose soul burned with guilt— whose soul wished for an end to the story.
“ My father was a sick, twisted, disgusting piece of a human being. No, he doesn't deserve to be called one. ” The sorrow in her eyes quickly turned into burning rage, the flames within her bursting with ferocious want of blood lust and revenge. It scared Robin for a moment but she reminded herself of the Firefly that was wrecked with guilt and grief, wishing for a better future while not allowing herself to indulge in that future.
“ He saw us as toys. Entertainment. He put me and my siblings against each other. My mother’s passing only encouraged it further. ” The light in her eyes burns so brightly, only to simmer to an exhausted one. Firefly didn't remember who went first, who she had fought, who she had killed first or last.
“ It’s been years since then, but sometimes I look back and I still see the blood on my hand. I would say I’ve moved on, but other times I wondered what could have been different. ” Firefly said in a final admittance, voice so full of acceptance that Robin thought even through all of those hellish things, Firefly still found the strength to move on.
Robin, against her own thoughts, lifted one hand to gently hold Firefly’s face. Her inner voice screamed at her but when Firefly leaned into the touch, Robin’s brain entirely short circuited. Words alone won’t be able to comfort Firefly so Robin hoped this would be able to soothe the sorrows she carried.
Grief is love without a place to go.
Sparkle took that moment to barge in.
“ We got a messenger from— ” The squire stopped herself, seeing Robin pulling away her hands and backing away at lightning speed that even Firefly looked confused.
The Halovian cleared her throat, rising from her spot. “ A messenger from Xianzhou? ” Sparkle nodded at her question. The Halovian took the chance to get out of there, in an excuse to get ready. The other two watched silently. Sparkle then turned to Firefly.
“ God damn it, I should have waited five more minutes. ” The squire whined. Firefly glared, huffing.
“ You should have. ”
“ Yeah, I— What ? ”
The messenger came with a single message from Xianzhou’s Empresses on the request to hold a meeting at Aslen Peak where the royals and the attendees would discuss the upcoming actions.
It’s perplexing as to why the Xianzhou Alliance suddenly attacked. Of all people, Robin would have placed her bets on the Belobogs.
It’s the first time she ever met the pair of Xianzhou Alliance’s Empress. While Empress Feixiao was confident and bold in a way a queen would demand your attention, her wife— Empress Yukong was absolutely elegant and regal in the way she carries herself. She’s charismatic, where your attention would solely be on her. Robin wondered if she could ever reach that level.
“ Welcome everyone, ” Empress Yukong greeted. It’s apprehensive, to be facing such personalities. Robin is glad to not be alone. Her eyes drifted off to the side, where she a familiar bush of blue hair and the harmonies in her singing.
“ Misha! ” She called out, ignoring etiquette and whatever not because she couldn't care less when it comes to her younger brother.
“ Robin. It’s relieving to see you, sister. ” The two siblings hugged as Robin felt the corner of her eyes stung with unshed tears. Misha was already slightly crying.
“ I’m sorry for not contacting you. When the Xianzhou Alliance attacked, it was so sudden I barely had the time to react. We were able to defend Golden Hour but they besieged us instead. I surrendered myself because it was the best course of action. I don’t think the Xianzhou themselves want to fight. ” Misha explained, holding tight to her hand. Robin squeezed back, feeling guilty not being able to support her younger brother in such a tough situation.
But Robin knew that Misha did a good job at minimizing damages and looking for a way to stop bloodshed.
“ Have you heard of Sunday? ” She asked quietly. Misha’s eyes sharpened. “ I have not. Every letter I sent to the capital has been met with silence. I’m sure someone is actually intercepting any sort of communication towards Sunday. ”
Robin could feel a growing headache forming in her head. “ We’ll discuss this later, ” She sighed as Misha nodded. The two returned back to the group.
Empress Feixiao clasped her hand, “ Alright! Now that we’re all here, let’s get down to business. ” Her eyes glimmered threateningly.
“ I’m Empress Feixiao and this is my lovely wife, Yukong! ” The Foxian Empress introduced with a surprisingly cheerful voice. Empress Yukong deadpanned, “ I can introduce myself. ”
“ Princess Robin of Penacony-Glamoth. ” Robin then gestured to Firefly. “ Crown Princess Firefly of Penacony-Glamoth. ”
“ I’m Sparkle, not a princess. ”
General Blade didn’t do as much as grumbled as his introduction. No one said a word about it. Maybe except Empress Feixiao.
“ Gallagher, not a princess either. ” Sir Gallagher chimed in and everyone stared at him. He raised an eyebrow and they all moved on.
Lastly, the attention fell onto the figure standing next to Empress Feixiao. A small figure akin to a teenager, with ember eyes and gray hair.
“ Yunli. Not a princess. ” Yunli introduced and that’s when Robin realized she’s the smaller knight with the gigantic sword who fought against General Blade. How fascinating.
“ Now that’s out of the way, ” Empress Yukong started, eyes narrowing dangerously, “ I hope Penacony-Glamoth will have a good explanation as well as a compromise as to the irreparable damage you have caused to our nation. ”
It’s Robin who countered, her wings flaring in distress. “ The only offense we have done is protecting what’s ours. ”
Empress Feixiao shrugged, “ Oh, we know what we’re doing here but we’re not talking about that. We’re talking about the time you attacked one of our villages and left a gruesome discovery. ” Empress Feixiao’s eyes were harsh and she looked like she would kill everyone there instantly.
It’s not what shocked them.
“ Attack? What atrocious idea do you have right now? We have never attacked anyone, we have no reason to. ” Firefly cut in, eyes critical as she scrutinized the Xianzhou Alliance’s representatives.
“ The village was situated at the western border of Penacony, our eastern border. Nothing was destroyed nor burnt but all of the villagers met a gruesome end where their throat were slit and their vocal chords missing, as if the assailants deliberately targeted that. ” Empress Yukong explained the gruesome description and Robin felt bile in her throat.
“ What perplexed us the most was that there was no sign of struggle. All villagers seemed to have died doing daily or mundane things. ”
That had everyone stumped.
“ Okay, but it doesn't mean we did it. We have no reason to attack an innocent village nor do we get benefits from it. ” Firefly emphasized, growing a little more frustrated.
“ Then, how do you explain this attack? ” Empress Feixiao pushed, her own frustrations growing. She seemed to clash with Firefly and Robin was afraid a fight would break out between them.
“ No signs of struggle and their vocal chords taken away. This seems like the type of thing you’d see in a horror play. Like a cult thing. ” Sir Gallagher said absentmindedly. Misha froze upon hearing his words, his eyes averting to find Robin’s.
“ What Aeons do each kingdom worship again? ” Misha suddenly asked. Confused looks were all he got.
“ The Xianzhou Alliance strongly follows Lan the Hunt. ”
Firefly crossed her arms, “ It’s quite hard to say but a large percentage of Glamoth follows Terminus the Finality. ”
“ And Penacony follows Xipe the Harmony. If you think of it, none of these factions sounds like the type to kill people and take their vocal cords away. Unless, you look at it from a different angle. ” Sparkle concluded, eyes drifting towards the Penacony duo. So did others.
Misha sighed, “ While I wouldn't say we did it, it is a big possibility someone or something within Penacony had done that. ”
“ Get to the point already. ” Yunli glared.
“ Penacony didn't exactly follow Xipe the Harmony from the beginning. Back then, there was an old Aeon called Ena the Order, who met their demise when Xipe rose. Due to the similarities and differences, Penacony began worshiping Xipe and left the old god. But I believe that there is a faction, specifically following the Order and enacting heinous acts in their name. ” Misha explained with a stern expression before it fell into one of sadness and resignation.
“ And we believe that faction is rooted in the royal family. We call them The Ravens. ” Robin continued, smiling weakly at Misha whose shoulders slumped.
Empress Feixiao cupped her chin, “ A faction worshiping an old, dead god… It sounds plausible. But how does it explain the inclusion of the royal family? ”
“ The Ravens are a faction that worship the dead Aeon, Ena the Order. I don't know their motives but the Dreammaster is probably behind it. Throughout my years, I’ve noticed a lot of things. The most obvious is how they isolate our brother, Sunday. ”
Sparkle hummed, “ So you’re saying that The Ravens might have done it? ”
Robin shook her head, “ Not might. I’m sure they did it. Voices or harmonies, is an important symbolism to Penacony. It portrays freedom, free will and our rights as sentient beings. Taking vocal cords away is… as if taking someone’s rights away. Enacting Order on them. ”
“ Okay, freaky cultist stuff. How do we confront— ”
“ Your Eminence! The southern troops are being attacked by unknown assailants! ” The booming, panicked voice of the messenger alerted everyone.
“ What?! ”
“ The western battalion is also being attacked! ”
“ Any idea of the situation? ” Empress Yukong interrupted, pulling her wife to the side. The messenger nodded, shaking and trembling.
“ They– They’re using something to disorient and confuse our soldiers. ”
Robin gasped, “ Harmonies. They’re using harmonies. ” That thought filled her with so much rage. Xipe’s harmony— should never be used for violence. Misha and Sir Gallagher grimaced.
“ Well, that confirms it's The Ravens? ” Yunli questioned.
The messenger took a deep breath, “ T-They spoke of a prophecy where the Order would bring back salvation and the King will lead them. ”
Everyone stared.
“ Yep, it’s The Ravens. ” Robin was just tired at this point. Brother, what have you got yourself into ?
“ We have no time to waste, let’s call for a temporary alliance. All troops, to your positions! ” Empress Feixiao did not waste any more time.
“ Sir Gallagher, defend the Golden Hour while General Blade, we’re breaching the capital. ” Firefly commanded as Robin turned to her wide eyes. The Crown Princess’ eyes softened.
“ Robin, I'd rather you wait here. ”
“ What ? I can’t simply do that! My brother is— ” Robin’s words were cut off as she staggered, myriads of colors blending into her visions as the dull ache in her head returned. Firefly caught her before she could hit the ground.
“ See? You haven't recovered from your excessive usage of harmonies two days ago. You keep using them even when you’re tired. ” Firefly said softly as she squeezed Robin’s side in the form of a hug. She carefully left the Halovian to Sir Gallagher, who nodded in respect.
“ All troops! Behind me! ”
The march to the capital was met with all sorts of endeavors. From assassination attacks to a literal blockade. That however, didn’t stop the Glamoth’s knights. Breaching into the castle was easy enough, with most guards truly being traitors of their kind.
The Ravens , Firefly spat bitterly as she entered the main hall. It was short of empty, a humming ambient occupying the palace. It’s not until she reached the throne room that all the rage and anger in her started to swell.
“ Crown Princess Firefly, you’ve arrived. ” Prince of Penacony, Sunday von Oak greeted her. He sat on the throne, dull golden eyes looking down on her. That scene trudged her back to the day where the red seeped into her clothes as blue eyes squashed her.
“ It seemed that a thief like you finally made yourself apparent. ” Sunday started, his voice low and tinged with a toxic anger.
“ Stealing my beloved sister away from me, forcing her hands and minds to bow down to you… Despicable of you truly. ” Sunday spat, glaring at her with wide, manic eyes. His voice seemed to grow deeper and more inhumane. Vibrating against her ears like a calling of destruction.
“ I had to save her. ” He whispered, golden eyes filled with the black ocean, like the abyss consuming his body.
“ So what? You poisoned her? Tried to kill her? ” Firefly snarled, eyes blazing as Sunday held out his hands. He didn't feel human anymore.
“ For I am salvation, for I am Order, for I am justice… I will free you of your injustice and enact Order upon your poor souls . ” He didn’t sound human anymore. His voice was a gargle of noises, a mixture of an abomination trying to take form as a living being and Firefly couldn't help but think— that is an insult to all beautiful beings.
Her sword lights up in a brilliant burst of orange and red, the light of Glamoth shining in the darkest part of the Order. A harmony of symphonies singing.
A horror inducing sound crashed her ears, a canopy of singing knocking her down. The Order sang, with a burning hatred and an unfiltered melody. It’s nothing like Robin’s harmony.
Firefly cut through the illusions without a thought, sword so close to Sunday’s neck. She thought it was anticlimactic, so dramatic that a single swing was enough to cut through.
“ How pathetic . How much humanity has fallen without the Order that you dare raise your blade against the innocents. ” Sunday— no, something stated with disgust.
“ You’re nothing but innocent. ”
“ For all the thoughts that you fill yourself with, it’s sad to see how humans have strayed without the Order. ”
“ Get out of his body. ”
The voice stopped before a resounding laughter filled the room as Firefly watched. Golden eyes stared into her soul.
“ Oh, lost child. You would be glad to see this body instead. If it had been her, the Order would have long been revived. ” Firefly felt cold at the implications of those words. She could feel the rush of her blood in her ears as her grip tightened in her sword.
“ Sunday, as obedient as he is, was weak in many ways. But Robin was blessed. The Harmonies favored her. For years I tried to instill it in her, the ideals of Order but that girl was more stubborn than she is given credit for. ” Somehow, the tone had changed. From something abysmal and melancholic to just down right evil and disgusting. Firefly felt her blood boil.
“ I resorted to many options. Her childhood was filled with unnecessary emotions that should only be used to guide the Order. So I did what all Father would do, I saved her . I rid her of those ideals, those useless memories. There were unexpected side effects but none I couldn't handle. ” Firefly wanted to rage, her blood felt like a volcano in her own body. Those words, the implications they were giving— Firefly wanted to put a sword through his mouth.
The day in that garden, Firefly discovered a horrifying discovery. The harmonies that sang and appeared were too familiar. She heard it somewhere– in a far away land, where the wind sang along and the sea rose. That day when she saw those blue hair and shining smile, an echoing song replayed in her head.
For years, she remembered that song. For years, she held onto it. Things could have been different.
If it weren’t for this bastard. If he hadn’t erased Robin’s memories.
Flames swelled up inside, bursting like a fire against a forest.
Ever changing universe, but you and I will always shine.
The war came to an end in just three days. The world has witnessed as a brilliant fire of green and red slashed apart the Order.
The Xianzhou Alliance had done a great job at defending the borders, and a permanent alliance with the trade rights to Golden Hour was established.
Firefly returned with a solemn yet peaceful look, a regents of troops behind her with Sunday in tow— battered and injured, but alive. Her wife was quiet, looking thoughtful as Sunday was put in jail, charged with treason and coercion of betrayal against the royal family. The man did not speak a word.
It’s only once they were alone in Robin’s tent that Firefly spoke up.
“ I’m sorry for what happened to your brother. For what he did to you. You– You don't deserve that. ” Robin’s breath hitched. It was a fresh wound, seeing her how her brother had fallen so far. Had they not been enough? Or did Father Gopher’s teachings take roots into his mind until it broke him apart? Robin couldn't imagine how Misha felt right now.
For all those years, Firefly had held her deep within her hearts. She had wished, hoped and prayed for the day the Aeons would hear her. For the songs to be sung again. But she received it in such an unexpected way.
Robin didn't remember her. Robin didn't remember the small moment they had when stumbling upon each other on that small cliff. All of that had been erased, stolen from her. And it made Firefly so angry, so guilty because for all the promises that Robin might not remember, Firefly did.
And she still wasn't able to protect her.
She held Robin’s hands, startling the Halovian. She slowly brought it up until Robin held her face, watching her reaction. The slight red dusting Robin’s cheeks told her enough.
“ I’m sorry. I’m sorry I couldn't tell you sooner. I’m sorry for not protecting you when I promised to. ” Firefly spoke, thumb gracing against the back of Robin’s hand. The Halovian turned slightly red.
“ Firefly? ”
“ I’m sorry for not loving you any sooner. ”
Robin’s breath hitched.
Firefly inhaled, praying to the Aeons for the courage she needed— and leaned in.
Here inside our universe, you and I against the moon, all those dreams you thought you’d lose, we’re gonna make them come true.
In the year X367, New Belobog arose with victory as news of an internal rebellion had finally reached its end against the previous Supreme Guardian, Cocolia Rand. Newly reinstated Supreme Guardian Bronya Rand opened the gates of New Belobog to the world, signifying a new beginning for them
( “ It is a pleasure to meet you, Your Highness Robin and Firefly. I am the Supreme Guardian of New Belobog, Bronya Rand. This is my betrothed, Seele. ”
The dark haired woman looked like she wanted to be anywhere but here. )
In the year X367, the former Crown Princess Firefly of the Penacony-Glamoth Kingdom rose to become the King of the Glamoth Kingdom. Similarly, former Princess Robin rose to become the Queen of Penacony with the exile of Sunday von Oak.
In the year X370, Misha von Oak renounced his rights to the throne before becoming the Head Maestro of Golden Hour. He served his family for years to come, before leaving to travel the world with a ‘band of misfits’ called the Astral Express.
In the year X373, Sparkle announced her relations to the Crown Princess Firefly right before renouncing her rights to the throne. It was said she stayed by Firefly’s side until disappearing, with only a known letter saying ‘I’M COMING FOR YOU, SAMPO’ written in her diary.
In the year X376, Head Manager of the Royal Library Black Swan proposed to Dame Acheron. The wedding was said to be one of the most joyous ones. Doctor Ratio’s words were, ‘These gays are too much for me too handle.’
In the year X377, marked the first decade of the Penacony-Glamoth union. To celebrate, the kingdom invited everyone from all over. It was said that this particular gathering was the greatest one in history. Queen Robin would say that they might have overdone it.
The story of different kingdoms showcased a myriad of stories told by the old days. Now, only remnants were left of them but the stories told and passed down to countless generations remained something to hold dear to.
To this day, the Halovians still sing of the universe.
( The dawn is getting closer.)
