Work Text:
A dark stage.
There’s excitement building in the crowd. But also nervousness.
No one knows exactly what to expect from Kit and the Situations any more.
Then, a lone spot lights up Kit Tanthalos standing small and vulnerable centre stage. Her guitar is slung over her back as she stands behind a microphone stand. She holds the stand with a fierce determination and sings…
I've been tryna keep the demons away
But they've been creepin' into my house at night
And I've been tryna get rid of all the pain
So I've been drinkin' and stayin' up late
And I can't be the only one
Losing my head before my heart
Is given the chance to have a new start
Yeah, it's gettin' old
It’s raw and earnest and she’s baring her soul to the audience.
A soft light focuses on Graydon seated behind a piano off to her side. He’s playing the sweet melody we can already hear. Elora is standing supportively at his side with soft eyes on Kit.
Kit notices them just as the audience does and she smiles as she removes the microphone from the stand and carries it with her as she slowly walks over towards Elora and Graydon.
Kit sings to them as she approaches and they smile back at her proudly. Sheepishly she squeezes Graydon’s shoulder and offers up the microphone to Elora and it’s an apology and an acknowledgement all rolled into one simple gesture.
Elora accepts.
Then you
Then you
Made me feel me again
Made me feel like I can
Love you
Love you
I don't deserve your hand
'Cause I don't think I am good enough for you
The lights on them cut out and for just a split second there’s complete darkness on stage as a rogue beat explodes onto the scene with the beam of a new bright spotlight honed on Jade as she fiercely plays her drums.
She looks breathtaking.
Kit’s spotlight returns to life to follow her as she moves towards Jade with purpose. She’s still singing and we can hear her clearly through a now unseen mic.
While Jade only has eyes for the drums in front of her, Kit only has eyes for Jade.
I've been tryna keep the demons away
But they've been creepin' into my bed at night
So I'll go find myself another mistake
By having drunk sex and stayin' up late
And I can't be the only one
Losing my head before my heart
Is given the chance to have a new start
Yeah, it's gettin' old
The song is building and Kit’s words sung to Jade are starting to take on a new meaning that has the crowd screaming for more.
Is Kit really singing about love to Jade?
About loving Jade? Deserving Jade?
Are Kit and Jade official?
Jade locks eyes with Kit and the smile she wears tells the audience exactly what they want to hear. Kit’s love confession is proudly reflected on Jade’s face. They’re smiling at each other as Kit continues to sing her heart out.
Then you
Then you
Made me feel me again
Made me feel like I can
Love you
Love you
I don't deserve your hand
'Cause I don't think I am good enough for you
Elora and Graydon sing in chorus, backing Kit as her guitar finally finds its way to her hands and she plays.
Jade lets her drumsticks do the talking as she answers Kit with her own fierce solo.
Good enough for you
Good enough for you
Good enough for you
Good enough for you
Good enough for you
Good enough for you
Good enough for you
Good enough for you
The pure joy on every band member’s face speaks volumes as they pour their passion into their music.
Then you (good enough for you)
Then you (good enough for you)
Made me feel me again (good enough for you)
Made me feel like I can (good enough for you)
Love you (good enough for you)
Love you (good enough for you)
I don't deserve your hand (good enough for you)
'Cause I don't think I am good enough for you
Good enough for you
Good enough for you
The lights blink out with the final beat but the song’s impact remains.
Kit and the Situations are back!
