History of the hack

In the year 200X, during Elec Man development, an ownerless soul found his unfinished body and decided enter on it, giving him a soul. When Dr. Light finished the Robot Masters, during the presentation, Elec Man has seen all the crowd of people. They were happy and were also admiring the new Robot Masters. Elec Man was smiling because that, including all of his brothers.

But in the night of reprogramming by Dr. Wily and in the day of the incident, when the Robot Masters began to break havoc in all the city. Elec Man and all his brothers have done much destruction, but he has exceeded on this. He have killed many people and him, in his normal form saw what he has done and he felt very bad, REALLY BAD, because he understood, back then in the day of the presentation, that people have dreams and wishes that soon will be fulfilled. And the most important, all of them have a good heart. And Elec Man hiddenly cried for all he has done and also said in low voice

"What I’ve done?"

"Why I did this to the people?"

"It's like if… if I hadn’t a…  Heart…"

He arrived to the Power Plant of his stage and hid several Roses’ seeds and during the battle against Mega Man, he inwardly cried for that pain and when he has been defeated his soul haven’t rest in peace.

Ten years later, just after the events of Mega Man 10, in the same Power Plant, which used to be the stage of Elec Man, all the workers there have been mysteriously electrocuted and have died by unknown reasons, and so it happened “The Power Plant Slaughter” same who’s abandoned and ends surrounded by plants and vines…

I wrote this anecdote just after the end of the day to avoid forgetting about it.

     Day One

My summertime vacations have just begun. I wanted an original Mega Man cartridge for my NES because I really like those games. I played all the classic saga going through the second game to tenth, but I’ve never have played the first one. It was then when I realized that the fair have just opened, so I went there to buy some household items until I saw it, a Mega Man game with a very cheap price. I asked the vendor about why the game had a really cheap price, he answered that that game was strange, something called a "hacked" game. The vendor added that the kid who returned it time ago stated

"I will leave this cartridge. I don't want to play it anymore."

Naturally I asked, why? The only thing he said was

"Elec Man..."

In that moment I didn't believe any of his words because I thought it was just a trick to avoid selling me the game and at the end I decided to buy it.

Back in my house, when my parents went shopping, they leave me there to take care of the house, taking advantage of the situation, I decided to use that time to play the game. When I first saw the cartridge, this wasn't grey colored like other common NES cartridges, this was red with black Roses. I liked that detail because it was well done. When I started to play the game was just normal (like the original Mega Man was supposed to be) until I tried to choose Elec Man stage, the game wasn't responding and I ended trying to play with the other Robot Masters. When I ended I played against Elec Man, at the beginning he didn't make his pose, he just stood still and I noticed a tear coming out, instead of his name being displayed in screen a different text appeared saying

"Get away. I would kill you"

I started to suspect. Even when I defeated him my suspicions where still there, but they ended when I defeated Dr. Wily.

That night when I went to sleep, I dreamed I was Mega Man and when I defeated Elec Man, the time moved forward ten years later. I went to see the Power Plant where it used to be Elec Man stage, now it was in ruins, everything was shadowy and there were many vines and plants. When I arrived where I fought Elec Man, there was him, the red of his armor was gray and the yellow was white, his boots were black just like his eyes and they also had red pupils. Suddenly, coming from nowhere he killed me using one of his Thunder Beam, in just a single shot right in the chest. In this moment Elec Man said

"I warned you... I am unhearted... I am... Elec Man Unhearted..."

Everything went blank, the dream didn't keep going and suddenly I woke up. When I was recalling the dream my suspicions returned again.

    Day Two

In the morning I decided to look up in my computer and investigate about the kid who was the previous owner of the cartridge. It came as a big surprise to me after knowing that the kid suffered from a madness attack and consequently from a heart attack and died a week after acquiring the cartridge. Apparently, he wasn’t able to surpass his fear to Elec Man Unhearted and he didn’t recovered, although having a good health condition. I decided to dispose of the cartridge but I couldn’t… It was stuck on my NES, after thinking about it a while, I choose to play again but… It was not the same from the previous day.

When I saw the title screen. There were many black and pink Roses covering the black background of the game. No Robot Master was available except for the Dr. Wily box, but instead it was Elec Man taking his place with the same appearance of my dream and when I started to play the stage, it was the same Power Plant of my dream, it was raining and the Plant is abandoned and also their colors were different being just white, gray and black and there also were many plants, vines, black and red Roses, the only color appreciable being red apart from Mega Man colors. Elec Man theme wasn’t playing instead of its place was some sound resembling the rain but in 8-bits. Down the way human and Robot Masters bodies were around and in all of them a growing black or red Rose. That surprised me a lot, it was exactly like it was in my dream.

When I arrived where Elec Man was in the real game, the rain stopped and he appeared, but with the same appearance of my dream, he was Elec Man Unhearted. I tried to defeat him but he was disappearing every time I shot him and also his attacks were so harmful. Suddenly Mega Man started crying out of frustration and received one Thunder Beam from Elec Man Unhearted. Just in the moment when he is about to die he says his last words in a text box:

“What happened with… You… Elec Man?”

Then Elec Man answers to this question saying:

“I’m sorry… I don’t have a heart… To feel it… So if I don’t have one… You shouldn’t have one… To feel… My pain”

The stage faded to black. The Mega Man corpse is shown on screen and Unhearted at his side. He smiled and crying blood he got close to Mega Man and he used his Roses to take the corpse also taking out the Mega man heart, turning it into a blue and cyan Rose. After that another text box appeared:

“I warned you… The black Roses will follow you… I am the black Roses”

After that my screen turned into static. I, quite scared, tried to remove the cartridge, fortunately this time I could remove it from the NES and decided not to play it again, not knowing that this was useless.

That night when I went to sleep I dreamed about what happened to Elec Man before being Unhearted and at the end of this events I dream about the same stage, the abandoned Power Plant and I see Elec Man Unhearted, he chases me and anywhere he puts a step on there are black Roses growing with their spikes. I was trying to run but I couldn’t escape, at the end the black Roses caught me surrounding all my body causing me a great pain. In my desperation and also because the pain I started crying. I see my tears making its way to the black Roses. Elec Man got close to me and said:

“I’m sorry… You shouldn’t have played with the cartridge before…”

He put one of his hands on my chest, just where the heart should be and then he electrocuted me until I died or at least I thought that. Elec Man Unhearted then proceeds to rip-off my chest and he takes my heart, turning it into a red and blue Rose. He looked at me and said:

“My heart no longer exists… So yours should not exist anymore…”

Unhearted, crying out of pain and covering his face with his right hand, smiling. After that I awoke suddenly.

I passed three days with that horrible nightmare.

    Day Six

My parents were worried about me, I told them about the problem, they were quite surprised because in the beginning they thought I was lying, but it was the truth, I was telling the truth and they ended believing me. They took me with the psychologist who treated me well since the very first moment, probably because he was the same psychologist who also treated the previous owner of the cartridge, the kid who died because Unhearted. Thanks to his help I could surpass the nightmare. At the end I’m Mega Man and I defeat Elec Man Unhearted who turns himself into a small orb, just the way Cyber Elf X does, and suddenly everyone who died victims of Elec Man Unhearted are revived and the orb disappears. I’m completely relieved, I woke up smiling and saying

"I’m ready.”

    Day Seven

I played that strange cartridge, when it started the first I saw was the Elec Man Unhearted sprite from nowhere, in a black background, he looked at me and said in a text box:

“Did you stop fearing me? Prove it facing me this time…”

After that he disappeared, then there it was, the title screen. When I finally made it to the end of the stage and faced Elec Man Unhearted, he didn’t disappeared when I attacked him. In fact, his difficulty now was like the normal Elec Man so it was quite easy defeat him. Once arrived at this point he turned into an orb and disappeared. Right in the moment when Mega Man teleported out of the stage the screen turned into static and the game stopped working. I decided to remove the cartridge, it remained unchanged in its appearance. But the game did not work again, I was not able to play it because my NES could not recognize it. I felt very relieved about that. I defeated the heartless Elec Man ghost and freed myself from its “curse”. I left the cartridge on my NES.

    Day Eight

I wanted to save the cartridge in a properly place, but for my surprise when I came to search for it, I noticed it wasn’t there anymore, it just disappeared, Unhearted has gone. Instead of the cartridge I saw a note.

“You are free from my curse, but the next won’t be. – EMU (Elec Man Unhearted)”

So, here is a little warning for all of you… If you see this cartridge, be careful if you’re a coward.
