“Phew!” Chiyo threw herself into the diner booth with a sigh. They’d just completed Koharu’s fourth mission - sorting out two teenage couples within a messy web of crushes at once. Sure, these missions were lower stakes, being young love and all, but they were much more complicated with how volatile kids could be.
“We got there in the end,” Ena sat down next to Chiyo as Kanna sat opposite them. “Would have helped if someone hadn’t accidentally shot one of them mid-fight.”
“Hey, it’s not my fault! Kanna threw a flashbang, and I couldn’t see!”
“Hey, all’s fair when it’s weapons-free ♥️”
Koharu was the last to sit down, much quieter than the rest of them. Kana turned to her, quizically raising a brow. “Hey, Koharu. Something up?”
“Oh, nothing, nothing,” Koharu waved her hands, flustered, seemingly broken from her thoughts. “Just realising… I might have to look some things up between missions.”
“Oh? You could try asking me if you want. That’s what I’m here for, after all.”
“Okay! Um,” Koharu thanked Ena as she passed her her burger. “So what… what does “skibidi” mean?”
…
…
“What.”
“Sorry, it’s just, I heard one of that group say it and some other things I didn’t understand, so I got confused and-”
“Hey, Koharu, Koharu! It’s fine,” Kanna patted her on the shoulder, trying to calm her down. “The question was just. Surprising, that’s all.”
Kanna tapped her head, trying to think. “Okay… how to explain…”
“Wouldant it bee easyshier toe jus’ show ‘er?” Chiyo spoke through a mouthful of chips, pulling out a phone.
“Chiyo, are you sure it’s a good idea to expose her to-” Ena’s protests were muted as Chiyo slid the phone across the table, TikTok already loaded. The trio watched in silence as Koharu picked up the phone and began to scroll - the light slowly leaving her eyes as “gyatt’”, “rizzler”, and “Ohio” could all be heard from the phone.
“Want a chip?”
“Yeah…”
As Chiyo passed the chip, she suddenly swiped two chicken nuggets from Koharu and Kanna’s side of the table, grinning. “Hehe. Fanum tax!”
After seeing Koharu’s deadpan face, Chiyo apologised.
“Anyway”, Kanna tapped her chin thoughtfully. “Wow, thinking about it… how much more have you missed.”
“2019, right?” Chiyo finished off her chips, throwing the box into the bin behind them. “Biggest thing would probably be the pandemic, right?”
“Oh yeah, Covid.”
“Pandemic!?
“Oh yeah, big mess. They had everyone inside isolating because of it. It was one of the worst two years for cupids worldwide.”
“Oh…”
“Hmm, what else?” Chiyo tapped her chin, thinking about how to fill Koharu in at the right pace. “Ena, you got anything?”
Ena looked up, swallowing the bite of her chicken wing. “Oh, uh… Koharu, did you play video games at all?”
“Um, a little! Mainly Sims…”
“Hmm. Not much for sims over the past five years.”
“Oh, she might know about the Souls games!”
“Why would she know about them- hey, don't you hate them, Chiyo?”
“Since when?”
“I remember when Kanna beat Elden Ring first, you-”
“Shut up.”
“-Okay. And anyway, don’t you prefer fps games?”
“Well, yeah, cause they’re not boring-”
“You still get upset whenever I beat you, though.”
“I do not!”
As the two kept bickering, Kanna sighed, turning back to Koharu and scratching her head awkwardly. “Sorry about them,,,”
Koharu chuckled, brushing her worry off. “It’s okay. I think I’m used to it at this point. Mostly.”
“Ah, good,” Kanna threw a chicken nugget into her mouth, munching through it quickly. “If you have any other questions, though, don’t worry about asking. It’s been… a long five years, to put it mildly. None of us mind getting you up to speed.” Koharu nodded vigorously, which Kanna couldn't help but laugh at as she ruffled her hair.
“Good. Now finish your food before it gets cold; don't wanna waste it.”
“But it didn't cost anything.”
“Never waste a good burger.”
…
“Heh, nothing burger-”
“STOP.”
