Work Text:

Katsuki wakes up, in his bed, alone. But as he blinks, the image of his bedroom ceiling becoming clearer, he can hear Eijirou already up and making breakfast in the kitchen.

They’ve been dating for about eight months, or at least it will be eight months in exactly four days, and Katsuki knows he is exactly two things. Madly in love and absolutely fucking terrified.

Eijirou has always had the ability to hurt him. Kamino had cemented that and it’d been years since that fateful night. But this was different and now Katsuki has a decision to make.

Katsuki rolls out of bed, his bones cracking, per usual, as he stretches followed by a yawn spilling from his mouth before he finally shuffles into the Kitchen and sees Eijirou at the stove.

Any other morning, the sight would’ve made him laugh. EIjirou stands at the stove in just his underwear. Less for decency, considering Katsuki had already seen all of him and his neighbors couldn’t see into his kitchen at this angle, and more so so he doesn’t splatter bacon grease on his dick. And it almost hurts how Katsuki can see the smile forming on Eijirou’s face as he hears him come in.

“Morning, Kats!”

“Morning,Ei,”

Eijirou immediately clocks the wobble in Katsuki’s voice but doesn’t turn around, keeping his eyes focused on the bacon he’s setting aside to drain.

Ei…I-I think we should bre-”

“No.”

The shake in Katsuki’s voice dies, shocked out of his system by the abruptness and calm of Eijirou’s words and the fact that he doesn’t even turn around as he responds.

In fact he’s still cooking breakfast. Cracking three eggs into the pan and adding extra egg whites since the two of them are currently bulking and need the extra protein.

“What?”

“I said, ‘No,’ Katsuki.”

Eijirou finishes up their eggs, plating breakfast and setting it on the table. All while not even passing a glance at Katsuki until he’s already poured them each a glass of juice and sat down.

Eijirou looks up at Katsuki as he bites into a piece of bacon, “You coming to eat?”

Katsuki stares at him for a moment, eyebrows pinched, before crossing the kitchen to sit across from Eijirou.

His eggs are cooked exactly as he likes them, edges crispy. He can see that his orange juice has no pulp even though Eijirou’s definitely does. And last time he checked, there was only pulp-in in his fridge, so Eijirou either separated the pulp out himself or bought pulp free just for him.

“I saw it in your eyes that night… Your eggs are gonna get cold and I know you hate that. I already mixed that one hot sauce you like into your egg whites but I can grab it if you wanna add more.”

Katsuki desperately tries to process all of Eijirou’s words as he bounces from one thing and then back to breakfas,t and with every word, he’s once again reminded of those two things he is.

Katsuki starts to eat, cause he does indeed hate when his eggs get even lukewarm, but he feels like he should be shaky like he was when he first came into the kitchen. Feels like he should be feeling more of that terror right now but all he feels is the fork in his hand and how it pushes against the plate as he digs into his eggs.

“Anyway, as I was saying….I saw it in your eyes that night,” Eijirou says again as he continues to eat his own breakfast.

Katsuki knew exactly what night Eijirou was talking about. That night had led them here.

Katsuki had spent that entire week insisting that he wasn’t spending money just to watch a remastered version of a crimson riot movie that had come out when they were five.

But the look on EIjirou’s face when they pulled up to the theater was already well worth the hundreds of, ‘Crimson Riot is THE best hero” comments Katsuki knew were coming.

“I can’t believe we’ve never watched this together! I haven’t gotten to watch since the beginning of our first year!”

Eijirou had seen the Crimson Riot movie so many times he could recite it in his sleep, something Katsuki was becoming well aware of, and yet, he stared up at the screen like he was five years old, seeing for the first time all over again.

Katsuki had been stealing glances at Eijirou from the moment the movie started. Watching him mouthing the words and shifting in his seat as if he was alongside Crimson Riot in every fight scene.

Katsuki couldn’t help but smile at every ‘manly’ speech Eijirou recited but it wasn’t until the movie was almost done that Katsuki looked over at Eijirou and saw the biggest smile he’d ever seen, accompanied by tears streaming down his face.

And that's when Eijirou’s words from earlier hit him.

Despite having seen it a million times, this was the first time Eijirou was seeing the Crimson Riot movie since officially becoming a hero. Since becoming Red Riot.

And in that moment, in the sharp smile and glimmer in Eijirou’s eyes, Katsuki saw the future. Their future. Of smiles just like that one, and happy tears, and spending too much fucking money on popcorn because while the two of them could share like they were doing then, their- kid

Katsuki startled himself, his own gasp bringing him back to reality. Ei’s eyes met his, still welled up with tears as he asked Katsuki if he was okay.

Katsuki nodded and without thinking, reached over to wipe the tears from Eijirou’s cheek, “Pay attention, Shitty Hair, this is your favorite fight.”

Eijirou smiled again, turning his head slightly to kiss Katsuki’s thumb before going back to the movie.

And while they had walked hand in hand back to the car after the movie was over, had crawled into bed together, and had whispered a million promises into each other’s skin, Katsuki couldn’t stop the sinking feeling that all of it was just going to slip through his fingers

It had seeped into his bones while he was allowing himself to fall for that oh-so perfect future. Which led him to this morning, months later.

“I know what you’re doing, Katsuki…”

“I fucking don’t.”

“Which is exactly why I told you, ‘No.’”

With that Eijirou starts to clean up the table like normal, collecting his plate and glass as he gets up, “You finished eating?”

Katsuki looks down at his plate and to his surprise, it’s almost entirely barren minus a scrap of bacon.

Katsuki nods and looks up at Ei as he goes to hand him his plate. Just like normal, Ei eats the scrap of bacon from Katsuki’s plate and takes it before heading to the sink.

It’s a piece of fucking bacon and yet Katsuki is once again remind of just how in love with Eijirou he is and just how much that fact scares him.

“Still good with the usual? I cooked so-”

“Yeah, I got the dishes.”

Eijirou places the dishes in the sink before walking back over to Katsuki. Katsuki can feel Eijirou’s warmth behind him as he just stares at the dining table in front of him, each miscoloring and stain becoming more interesting every second.

“Whatever it is you want, Kats, I’ll do it…If you still wanna breakup after you do the dishes, I’ll go.”

Katsuki sits silently as Eijirou kisses the top of his head and walks off towards the bedroom.

The sinking feeling seeps back into Katsuki’s being as he pushes away from the table and makes his way to the sink, but now it’s so much worse than it’s ever been. It crawls up his spine and into every crevice, filling his lungs. He’s drowning standing in his own goddamn kitchen.

What if he does say it again and Eijirou doesn't say, ‘No?’ What if he’s in Katsuki’s bedroom right now packing up his drawer of belongings? How’s Katsuki supposed to get ready every morning without the stupid finger drawing of Eijirou’s shitty hair on the mirror when the shower steams it?

Katsuki stares at the dishes in the sink as he rinses them quietly. He does the plates first and then goes to do the glasses. His glass has the littlest bit of juice at the bottom still while Eijirou’s is lined with drying pulp.

And in those stupid glasses, he sees it all again. The future. Their future.

Of two different orange juices in their fridge even though katsuki insists he’ll just drink the pulp, of his mom measuring the two of them together but doing all of their fittings separately due to superstitions that don’t even apply to them or make sense for them, and of tucking in a little girl with blonde hair and Eijirou’s sharp smile cause quirks can do some incredible things nowadays.

Katsuki turns the water off and quickly makes his way back to his bedroom just in time to see Eijirou coming out of the bathroom.

Katsuki isn’t sure how long he’d been standing there washing the dishes, which actually are still sitting in the sink, still very much dirty, but it was long enough that Eijirou’s eyes seem to be dry but clearly red and puffy.

“I-I can drop your stuff off to-”

“Will you marry me?”

EIjirou blinks for a few seconds before his face lights up as he smiles. It’s the exact same smile that was on his face that day in the movie theater, like he was watching his dreams come true in real time…and then he’s laughing, a slight warble in his voice, “What?”

“I am absolutely terrified. I am terrified of you realizing you are getting the shortest end of the shortest fucking stick. I am terrified of the life we could have together of overpriced popcorn and buying pulp free juice just cause it makes the other happy.”

Katsuki hands wave excitedly as he talks but if he doesn’t get all of this out now, he doesn’t know if he ever will.

“And stupid hero galas where I get to say no is better than me, not cause I’m gonna be the number one hero, but because I get to take Red fucking Riot to bed every fucking night.”

Kirishima bites his lip as he watches Katsuki rave and ramble with wide-eyes.

“I am so terrified of knowing I can have all of that but I could end up watching all of it slip away because of me, because I’m like this. But you’ve had the ability to break my heart since I was sixteen but you haven’t and I can’t keep being so fucking terrifed of it. So Eijirou Kirishima, will you marry me?”

“...I wasn’t sure when you’d wake up and I didn’t want you to wake up to an empty apartment if you woke up while I was still out so I strained the juice myself…You’re also out of paper towels now… Just by the way…”

Katsuki can’t get across the room fast enough. Ejiriou’s face is in his hands, and this kiss is so gods awful as their teeth click together, and they can’t pull each other any closer but it doesn’t matter cause they keep trying anyway.

Eijirou’s eyes are all welled up with tears again as he pulls away slightly, “Yes, I’ll marry you, Katsuki.”

“Right now,” Katsuki all but demands as he pulls Eijirou in for another kiss, running his fingers up the back of Eijirou’s neck and into his hair.

“Right now?” Eijirou laughs against Katsuki’s lips.

“I actually just wanna kiss you and feel you right now so maybe in like two hours…” Another kiss, “Five hours….Tomorrow.” Another kiss.

“I love you, Eijirou.”

“I love you, Katsuki.”

Katsuki Bakugou and Eijirou Kirishima have been dating for seven months and twenty-six days, they’ve been engaged for twelve minutes and forty-three seconds, and Katsuki is exactly two things.

Madly in love and so fucking ready for the future.
