Chapter 1: when the baby leaves

Chapter Text

He doesn’t know what to do, of course there’s a lot going on, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have some sort of semblance of what to do. His dad had always hounded into him that going into something not knowing what to do is how you get killed. While he agreed with that sentiment, his dad definitely could have handled what happened with Sammy better. Now he doesn’t know if he should go, or stay, but of course with their Dad being how he is, he’s checked out, not a good person to go to for anything, especially anything that has even the slightest hint of emotions. So Dean calls the only person he can think of to call.

A gruff voice answers the phone with a questioning “Hello?”

On the verge of some sort of breakdown Dean responds “Hi Bobby…”

Recognizing the voice the man on the other end of the phone relaxes and says “Awe hell boy, What’s gone on now that ya need ta call me for?”

“It’s Sammy-”

“What the Idjit do now?”

“He’s… he left Bobby.”

“Left where boy? Because leavin’ can mean multiple different things here.”

“Sammy’s done gotten himself into college… Full ride at Stanford.”

“Bet your pops wasn’t to happy ta hear that was he.”

“That’s one way to put it, but now, I just don’t know what ta do Bobby, the boy has gotten himself out, but, I also wanna be there ta support my brother, what should I do?”

“Damnit boy, ya need ta get your head out of your ass and talk to your brother-”

“Don’t you think I hadn’t thought of that?”

“Don’t cut me off ya idjit, ya need to talk to your brother without your daddy around to try to overtake the conversation.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, Oh” he says sarcastically before saying “Now get off the phone with me ya idjit, I’m not the one ya should be talkin to.”

“Yeah.. right… thank ya Bobby.”

“Not a problem boy, but if something were to happen, where ya actually fuckin need me, just call.” and with that he hangs up on Dean, not even fully giving him time to answer or say bye.

“Damnit!” Dean yells throwing the phone, while he wants to do what Bobby says Dean knows Sam won’t answer, he knows it because he already tried, so now he is back at square one.

He knows he should let Sam cool off so that he actually listens to what he says, but Dean is worried for him. Not because of the monsters, he knows Sam can handle those things, because, well, he trained him, and if Dean could handle things, so could Sam. No, he’s worried for his brother being in a more normal setting, anyone who actually looked at their childhood would call it abuse, hell, people even at the time called it abuse, and had called CPS on them multiple times. But they always moved on before anything real could come of it. So for Sam to be surrounded by intelligent people, Dean knows many things would be called into question, and he wanted to be there for Sam, to tell him that while, yes they had a weird childhood, it was better that they were together, because that’s what family is for.

But because he won’t answer now Dean is left to worry about what Sam may hear, or say, regarding his family. Especially because of the sour note their dad sent Sam away with. But there’s nothing he can do about that now. Now he had to get ready, make sure their dad wasn’t too drunk when he came back, and find them a hunt so that they could move on, and hopefully get back to things as if what happened with Sam didn’t happen.

Sense Dean knew he was alone for the night he knew he was able to entertain the ideas he was having, about leaving their Dad, about following Sams steps, but he also knew how his dad would react. While John was not the best dad to Sam, he was still a better dad to Sam than he was a father to Dean. That’s in part due to the fact that his mom had died, and their dad was enjoying the bottom of the bottle, Dean had to step up to take care of his 6 month old brother. Then their dad started hunting while dragging his boys along with him. At first Dean didn’t know what was going on, but when his dad put a shotgun in his hands at the age of 5, he found out about the supernatural world. But he insisted on keeping it from Sammy, No child needed to know that everything that’s told in stories and fairy tails was real, and probably wanted to kill them. That didn’t stop John from handing Sam a gun when he was 6, telling him he should be afraid of the dark, Dean tried to make it so that Sammy never understood the real meaning behind those words, but, that didn’t stop the world from telling Sam, Deans baby brother, that there were things out there that could and would kill him just for who hes connected to.

Trying to keep himself from looking too far into the past he tries to blur out his mind by turning on the TV. He knows the show is inaccurate, but he still loves watching Scooby-doo, it made him laugh while showing things that he dealt with on a near daily basis. It made light of what had been bothering him for years. While he’s watching the show he grabs a few beers from the fridge, because what goes better than your comfort beer, and a comfort show when your brother decides to leave? Not much. After being awake watching scooby-doo for a while Dean ends up falling asleep with the TV still on, and a beer in his hand.

He woke up to his dad busting through the door in the morning, while he knew his dad would come home stumbling in the next morning, but he wasn’t expecting his dad to have found a hunt while he was out. So they quickly packed their bags, cleaned up, and started making their way to the next town. So normal, yet so different. Dean went through the steps that he had to go to pack up, and often caught himself before saying something to someone who was no longer going to be traveling with them. Sam had packed up everything he owned before he left, and had cleaned everything that he had used, knowing their dad would be even more upset that he had left a mess and was leaving, than just him leaving. While it bothered Dean that he felt like he had to do that, he completely understood why he did, their dad was harsh on both of them, especially about cleaning. He had never really broken the militaristic cleaning, and how to make the bed out of his brain, and forced that style of thinking onto his sons.

Once they were packed up and ready to go John turned to Dean and threw him the keys. Only sort of expecting this he quickly catches the keys while giving his dad a questioning look, to which John replies “I think you should drive her. When we get to the new town I’m going to pick up another car and work on that.”

Dean, confused and flabbergasted asks “W-why? Wouldn’t it be easier to keep one car? There’s even less of us now, so we don’t have to fit as much-”

He’s promptly cut off by John taking a step towards him, and dean, reacting instinctively flinches and slightly drops into a stance ready to fight, when John says “Because you’re a man, and a man needs a car of his own, and this way we can keep more gear overall.”

Dean surprised that he’s the one going to be keeping the car that he had spent most of his childhood just nods in response, because who knows how to respond to their dad saying that they’re getting the old family car just because he’s a man. Before he could think on the topic more John, while getting into said car, says harshly “And you better keep her in good shape, she’s a fine tuned working machine, and you need to keep working her if shes going to stay that way.”

The end of the conversation being clearly marked by John slamming his door shut. Dean doesn’t know if this is a good or bad thing, because while all his good memories with Sammy were with this car, a lot of their bad ones were too. A lot had happened to the boys in their short life. Things hardly anyone could ever understand, things only their Dad and Bobby would ever be able to fully understand, while also not being allowed to tell anyone, or even attempt to explain why they do certain things, or act so weird around some events, to anyone, if they did John would explain why they shouldn’t by basically beating it into them. Which lead to a very lonely, secluded childhood. But that train of thought is for another day. Now, they need to get moving, he doesn't want his dad sitting in there without much to do, who knows what a still somewhat drunk John Winchester may do in a nearly empty front seat.
