Emergency?

Summary:

Tsukishima has a rude awakening (literally). What could be so urgent that he had to be awakened from his slumber?

Work Text:

Thundering footsteps echoed through the classroom corridor as she dashed to Class 4. A cool breeze hit her face through a slip between the windows. She burst through the sliding doors to find the bespectacled boy with his headphones on, taking a nap at his table. The remainder of his classmates, clearly taken aback at her brash behaviour, were throwing glances in hushed whispers.

“OEI TSUKISHIMA, do you know the time?? There’s an emergency meeting today!”

Hands on her hips, her nostrils flared as she scrunched up her nose at him. When it appeared his noise-cancelling function was in full effect, she yanked the headphones off and held them aloft before his face.

Rubbing his eyes groggily, his arms stretched above his head which lengthened his lanky frame even further. He squinted at her through bleary eyes and blinked as it adjusted. His disgruntled mannerisms oozed his displeasure at the abrupt awakening.

“You couldn’t have tapped me or something?”

“We don’t have time, you’re keeping the seniors waiting. I can’t believe you just slept through the bell.” She crossed her arms impatiently. Her foot tapped the classroom floor as her gaze focused on him languidly shoving his belongings into his bag.

“Okay fine let’s go?” he sighed.

Throwing a last pointed look his way, she turned her back to him and near sprinted back down the corridor to the direction of the club room.

“Um, is it really that urgent that our precious manager had to come get me herself?” His long strides had already caught up with her despite his casual speed.

She gave a brusque reply. “Tsukishima, it’s one thing to ignore the group messages but to keep your seniors waiting is just plain rude.”

“Alright fine, I’m sorry.”

“I’m not the one you should be apologising to.”

Tsukishima raised a hand to his neck almost sheepishly. He didn’t recall opening the chat today so it was his fault that he had missed the prompt for today. Also, was she that mad that she had to come all the way to the classroom? Girls were so hard to predict.

“My bad, you head in first. I need to find Takeda-sensei for something”

“Oh. Okay. Thanks...”

She raced off again before he could properly thank her. Damn, I’m going to get a scolding from the noisy duo for sure…

The club room door creaked open and he was greeted with darkness. Huh what the–

Pop--bang--whistle— “ SURPRISE!!!”

“… goddammit she really had me there…”

The club room was decorated in all manners or streamers with a huge sign that read 【 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TSUKKI 💓 】. The volleyball members were screeching and whooping, much to the chagrin of the birthday boy himself. He let out a heavy sigh and raised a hand to cover his face. He didn’t want them to see his smile over the immense relief he felt that she wasn’t actually upset at him.

“Tsukishima! Happy birthday!”

He turned to see her wearing a toothy grin as she held up a huge strawberry shortcake adorned with the same words and lit candles.

His eyes widened “how did you know..the shortcake…”

“Of course Tadashi knows everything about you? And even if he didn’t, Akiteru-san definitely does.” She held up a peace sign directed to Yamaguchi who grinned and returned it.

“Ugh, I can’t even keep my personal life private anymore.”

Tsukishima rolled his eyes at her but chuckled inwardly. He was pleasantly surprised at her definite masterminding of this occasion but he would never let it show. He settled down onto the club room floor ready to tuck in to his favourite shortcake. This would be one of the best birthdays of his life.

Notes:

Happy birthday to my favourite boy in the world. You mean so much to me.

The other fanfic is not finished yet but I’m taking my time with it.

Here’s to a very happy Tsukki day 🫶🏻🍰🎧✨
