Work Text:
Another nightmare invaded your mind; making you wake up in a cold sweat. You cautiously looked around your bedroom, breathing a sigh of relief to see nothing out of the ordinary. You got out of bed and made your way to the kitchen. Opening the patio door, you were welcomed by the cool nighttime breeze.
You felt at ease whenever you looked up into the night sky. Admiring the shining stars flickering like lights on a Christmas tree. It was hard to explain why, but your brain would regress to that of a child whenever you gazed up at them. Oh, how things have changed now that you're an adult.
‘Y/N’ you heard a voice call out your name. You turn to see your boyfriend Sugawara standing at the door. You completely forgot that you were living with him. He had woken up to go to the bathroom, but found you gone and went looking for you. ‘Oh hey,’ you called out. ‘Sorry for making you worry.’
‘Is everything okay?’ he asked, making his way to sit with you. ‘I’m fine.’ you smile sadly. It was a lie obviously; you didn’t want to worry him. You knew how he was whenever something was on your mind.
‘Another bad dream?’ he asked softly. His hand gently squeezed yours. Figured. He knew you like the back of his hand. You were bad at hiding your feelings anyway; he could see it on your face. Feeling the nightmare waning from your mind, you nodded in response.
‘It’s okay,’ he murmured. ‘You can always talk to me about it.’
You let out a huff, sniffling your nose and turning your head to keep Sugawara from seeing your glossy eyes. ‘I’m sorry,’ you whispered, a light tremble in your voice. You had a habit of apologizing over the smallest things, even when it wasn’t your fault. It was hard to break as you got in trouble a lot growing up. You tried to be perfect; always tried your best, but sometimes it wasn’t enough.
Maybe that was the reason for your nightmares: not being good enough.
Sugawara, however, saw things in a different light. He knew how much you struggled with your self-worth and found ways to cheer you up; saying what a kind, amazing person you were. In his eyes, you were perfect. He loved everything about you. He loved how you would wake him up in the early morning with butterfly kisses. He loved the food you’d make for him to take to school. He’d join you on your evening strolls looking up at the night sky; listening to you talk about the different constellations you’d spot. He’d be laughing his heart out at the jokes you’d tell. He loved hearing your voice when you sang, even if it was off-key. You were who he was the most excited to see when he came home.
A day doesn’t go by when Sugawara feels blessed to have you in his life. ‘You don’t have to apologize, the only thing that matters to me right now is to see you smile.’
