It was late into the night when Kai came up with the amazing idea to approach Beomgyu about sleeping in his bed together. It was only because of the fact that their dorm apartment was currently unbearably cold and of course through their incredible luck they were placed in a dorm building with no heating system whatsoever. Not to mention, but the freezing winter of Korea only got colder and colder, despite Spring supposedly being on its way. While the obvious solution was just to buy a heater, neither of them really wanted to cough up the money for one. So here they were. Suffering through the cold.
Kai was just worried about Beomgyu and how prone he was to getting cold easily. It wasn’t like they didn’t share things with each other already— cutlery, laundry detergent, sometimes even clothes. Beomgyu had a weird fixation on stealing Kai’s sweatshirts. Beomgyu always argued that he thinks they fit him better, but Kai thinks they’re way too big on him.
Regardless, this was new territory and all those things were done in like…a bro way. He wasn’t sure how Beomgyu would react. As a matter of fact Kai wasn’t sure exactly how he should feel. But he decided to simply ignore the pit in his stomach that formed at the suggestion of sleeping together and focus on the fact that it was incredibly cold and he needed warmth now or at least thats the excuse he was using.
So he found himself standing in front of Beomgyu’s door. He hesitated to knock, standing in front sort of awkwardly. He inwardly debated just going back to his room and freezing. Just do it Kai he mentally ridiculed himself and abruptly banged on the door. He heard a shuffle of sheets and a sound he presumed to be Beomgyu getting off the bed. His footsteps get louder while Kai’s heart simultaneously sped up.
Beomgyu opened the door and the pit from earlier returned in Kai’s stomach. He ogled at how perfectly messy Beomgyu’s hair was when he suddenly realized he was standing there like an idiot.
“Hyung!" He said a little too loudly for the time of day, "Uh sorry to bug you, but I was just gonna ask— and you can say ‘no,’ obviously — I just… wanted to- well, I don’t know".
“Kai, if you don’t get to the point right now, I’m going to slam the door in your face. I want to sleep. So, please, get on with it.” Beomgyu’s voice was tinged with exhaustion and irritation.
“Okay, I wanted to, sort of, maybe sleepwithyouinyourbed…” Kai stammered, his words coming out rushed and in a jumble.
“I’d prefer to actually comprehend your words,” Beomgyu said, the look of frustration growing on his face.
“Can I sleep with you? I know it’s weird, but it’s just so cold in my room and—”
“Yeah, it’s fine,” Beomgyu interrupted, his voice quick and almost breathless. He turned away, a faint blush creeping up his neck as he hurried back to his bed, leaving room for Kai.
Kai sighed softly, a wave of relief washing over him. He was mentally relieved that Beomgyu didn’t spit on him or slam the door in his face or any of the other five thousand worst possible scenarios that passed through his head.
Kai crawled in the bed and laid face up, Beomgyu had his back toward him. He took the opportunity to silently admire just how small Beomgyu managed to look, curled up into himself and the large comforter encapsulating him, making him appear even smaller.
“It’s not weird… right, Kai?” Beomgyu’s voice was almost a whisper, filled with uncertainty.
“Um, n-no, it’s just really cold in the dorm, so us sleeping together—” Kai mentally cringed at his word choice, “—or I mean resting together, is just us using our body heat to stay warm, right?”
“Y-yeah, exactly. It’s not weird,” Beomgyu said, slightly reassured even if the excuse wasn’t all that convincing. “So, like, if I moved closer to you, it wouldn’t be weird… right?”
“NO!” Kai blurted out, then cleared his throat, trying to sound casual. “No, of course not.”
A moment of silence followed as Beomgyu turned to face him, their eyes meeting in the dim light. “Don’t look at me like that, weirdo,” Beomgyu muttered, though his voice was soft. “You know how cold I get regularly… I just need more warmth.”
Kai tried to relax his face, though he only managed to look more strained as Beomgyu’s hand gently grasped his bicep. The touch was warm and delicate, sending a shiver down Kai’s spine.
Beomgyu’s fingers were soft and delicate, his grasp was a perfect balance of tight but not too tight that it hurt. Their bodies were close but not exactly touching. At the realization, Kai’s face heated up at the thought of their bodies becoming intertwined as the night went on.
Lost in his own thoughts, Kai barely noticed Beomgyu’s soft, rhythmic breathing as he fell asleep. He always thought Beomgyu looked so pretty while sleeping, his hair falling just right, framing his face in a way that made him look even more handsome. Eventually Beomgyu’s soft snores filled the room and lulled Kai to sleep.

The next day while Kai was in the living room bundled in blankets, Beomgyu joined him on the couch. It was something they usually did on Fridays. Kai played a switch game on their TV while Beomgyu watched for a bit until he got bored and whined to put on a movie or something. But Kai felt a sudden awkwardness. Beomgyu and him hadn't really seen each other all day as their schedules usually clashed. So this was the first proper interaction they would have.
But to Kai’s shock when Beomgyu entered the room he immediately scooted closer to Kai, lifting the blanket to engulf himself in the bundle too.
“Don’t look at me like that” Beomgyu immediately shot at Kai. Kai’s expression was like a deer in headlights, suddenly getting the urge to fix his face at Beomgyu’s comment.
“W-what?? I’m not even looking at you weird”
“Yes you are. Stop being weird.” Beomgyu put bluntly, “Need I remind you, you asked to sleep with ME yest-”
“Ohmygod don’t say it like that!” Kai hid his face in the midst of the blankets while Beomgyu rambled on.
After that, sharing blankets and sleeping together became the norm for them and more. Beomgyu would constantly barge into Kai’s room in the night and get comfortable without exchanging any words and Kai would knock on Beomgyu’s door only to be pulled in and thrown on the bed where they basically cuddled each other to sleep.
Other nights the two of them would stay up talking about everything yet nothing at the same time. Beomgyu mindlessly fiddles with Kai's fingers as Kai simply cherished Beomgyu's touch. Their legs intertwined, and both of them were so close they could feel each other’s breath on their cheeks. It felt so normal, so perfect. Kai couldn’t help but think that if he could stay here forever he would. He would stay with Beomgyu forever.
Everything was good until the weather started to very noticeably heat up as winter was swept away. The mounds of blankets became inconvenient and the warmth that was once there was turned into liters of sweat.
“So it’s getting hotter, huh?” Beomgyu commented casually (not so casually) as he entered their dorm and slipped off his shoes.
“Oh…uh yeah I guess it is” Kai responds putting down his phone.
“So we probably don't need to sleep together anymore, right?” Beomgyu asks, “Since it was all for the extra warmth and like the body heat and like staying warm…”
“Yeah I guess not then cause it would be really weird if we did still, right?”
Silence falls between the two of them and Beomgyu was giving Kai that blank look again, as if he knew Kai was holding back his true feelings on the matter. He starts moving closer and closer toward kai until he's completely invading his space
“Are you sure you want that?” He tilts his to the right.
“Well-”
“ ‘Cause I don't,” Beomgyu interrupts, “But I want you to be honest and tell me if I'm reading the whole thing wrong. Because I like you and I still wanna sleep together with you and talk with you and go on dates with you” He pauses for a moment as if catching his breath, “So do you still want to sleep together kai?
“Yes..” Kai looks down when suddenly Beomgyu then fully tackles Kai into a hug pushing them to lie down on the couch. They lay in silence briefly until Kai suddenly speaks up.
“You make me nervous hyung,” he confesses, “You make me so nervous I don’t know how to talk to you sometimes”.
“I make you so nervous yet you had the balls to ask to sleep together when I know you don’t get cold easily,” Beomgyu comments, “But the cold was “so unbearable” huh?” he peeks his head up from where it was nestled in the crook of Kai's neck. Kai’s face immediately flushes, but he accepts it with a small smile and turns the both of them to lay on their sides, facing each other.
“I just really like you, hyung…wanna be close to you” is all Kai says the last part coming out as a mumble. He brushes Beomgyu’s hair out of his face and begins to card his fingers through it. They stay quiet for a moment, as Beomgyu reaches over to cup Kai's cheek. “I really like you too Kai-ya” is all that’s exchanged before they lean into a long awaited kiss. The familiar feeling of their limbs being intertwined, holding each other on a couch that’s way too small for them and their lips finally slotted together feels so right. Kai thinks that he would love to suffer through the cold again with Beomgyu if this would always be the outcome.
