Work Text:
izuku midoriya was in love, and nobody knew.
it wasn’t like he didn’t want to tell anyone, but telling his friends that he’d been dating a boy online named dyna since he was in the seventh grade wasn’t really on his day to day agenda.
the only person who he’d explicitly told was his mother, but when you’re just barely thirteen years old and the peak middle school loser, inko hadn’t really believed him. she had already given him the standard rules of internet safety the day (and following three weeks) he’d been gifted his first phone as a birthday present, and izuku was always an obedient kid. he knew better than to get up to nonsense online. inko trusted her son, and izuku didn’t want to ever lose that, so when dyna had been mentioned again in passing and his mother made a comment on how internet friends were dangerous, izuku had debated completely cutting the other boy off. it wasn’t like he wasn’t used to doing so - the young boy typically did whatever his mother asked of him. he never wanted to cause her anymore suffering ever since izuku’s dad had walked out on them all that time ago.
but dyna was different than the rest of the people izuku had encountered online. the other boy had reached out initially to izuku through his all might blog, complimenting him on the dedication it must’ve taken to build it from the ground up. izuku took pride in his work, and the praise had always made it feel worth it.
allmightfan01 and dynakat hit it off right there and then, and there wasn’t a day where they didn’t talk, izuku managing to text dyna in secret (which wasn’t necessarily hard. both izuku and inko kept to themselves in their home, outside of their meals together and the occasional movie night). izuku told dyna everything. or, almost everything, rather, since izuku was smart enough to not release personal information on the internet, even if it was to someone he genuinely trusted. they both disclosed they lived in the same area, but izuku hadn’t been entirely sure he wanted to ever meet the boy who lived behind the holder of dynakat . so, any identifying features of izuku midoriya were kept to himself for now.
the relationship had somehow carried itself all the way up to izuku’s time in high school, the once quirkless hero talking to dyna consistently without fail, nearly having his phone being confiscated on more than one occasion by aizawa. izuku didn’t dare utter a word of what high school he’d been attending - dyna finding out he had been a quirkless loser all along and breaking up with him because of it would’ve been an insane blow to his already diminishing ego. it seemed dyna had done the same thing too, keeping his genuine identity while keeping up a relationship.
after his classes were through and his assignments were done for the upcoming week, izuku let himself stretch out (curl up. he hated taking up too much room) on the common area’s couch, mindlessly texting dyna as he usually did while his classmates came and went. uraraka had stopped for a quick chat on her way to tsu’s room to get some work done, and izuku waved to others passing by, like todoroki and sero leaving together and hagakure and ojiro doing the same. it was quiet, peaceful in the common room, even when kaminari and jirou crashed onto the couch across from him. everyone kept to themselves and did their own thing this time of day, and they were all completely fine with it.
mina, katsuki, eijirou had all made their way into the common room, the red haired boy making his way to the kitchen (to most likely raid the pantry), while mina took a chair and bakugo stood waiting. a room with a quiet katsuki bakugo was always a rarity, and everyone relished the small moments when they happened.
dyna had taken a small lull in their conversation, and a frown tugged at izuku’s lips. he wouldn’t call himself a clingy person, but each minute that continued to pass without a message sent from dyna had izuku’s mind wandering to the worst possibilities of what could’ve happened to him.
“how long is he gonna take in there?” mina’s voice was the first to break the silence, and both izuku and katsuki glanced up, izuku paying no exact mind to the question that was clearly targeted towards the blond boy. katsuki shrugged from his spot leaned up against the wall with a scoff and a roll of his eyes, before glancing back down at his phone, shooting a text with a small grin on his face. izuku studied him for a moment, only to be interrupted by the vibration in his lap, signaling a notification.
snapping his attention back to his phone, izuku bit back a smile at dyna’s contact popping up against the home screen of him, ochako, tenya and shoto. the photo had been taken at a birthday party for denki, the four of them beaming at the camera (three of them beaming, shoto letting a small smile pass, really). opening the message, izuku let himself relax into the cushions once more as he responded.
he hit send, and katsuki’s phone pinged behind him just moments later.
izuku blanched.
the green haired boy was smart. he knew well enough that the timing between him sending that message and katsuki receiving one directly after was incredibly coincidental. a bit too coincidental, honestly.
there was no way dyna and katsuki could be one in the same. it wasn’t possible. katsuki hated izuku, while dyna seemed to absolutely worship the ground he walked on. the differences between them were clear, but at the same time, one could argue the exact thing against izuku. one often would change their personality online to protect themselves and express themselves freely. it only makes sense if dyna (or katsuki) did the same thing.
glancing over the phone in his hands, izuku’s wide emerald eyes watched katsuki, his heart racing so fast to the point it ached . there was no way this was happening, truly. he watched katsuki draw in his lower lip just a bit and chew on it, a habit izuku had caught onto whenever the blond haired boy was thinking about something, before figuring out what he wanted to say, typing it and sending the text. izuku nearly jumped out of his skin when his phone vibrated again, shooting his gaze down to read the message from dyna, while also trying to pinpoint if the sudden hunch was right and both katsuki and izuku were idiots this entire time.
the coincidence was becoming more and more of a horrible hypothesis that just happened to be right. and izuku was terrified.
at this point, izuku hadn’t even noticed the sudden lack of people in the room. denki and kyouka had left, and mina had dipped into the kitchen to aid ejirou in his troubles to find any food. thus leaving izuku and katsuki alone on opposite sides of the room.
great.
slowly, hesitantly, izuku decided to test this damn hypothesis that was causing his heart to be on the brink of near explosion. a tiny grin slipped onto his mouth as he typed the words ‘i know what you are, katsuki’, completely ignoring their previous conversation to confront the problem head on.
a horribly risky idea. absolutely terrible. if this was wrong he’d be rolling in his grave for the next decade.
green eyes watched katsuki’s reaction right after he’d hit send.
katsuki blanched, his head whipping up and looking around the room, empty, other than izuku curled up on the couch. izuku’s heart lurched as his ruby eyes met his own emerald, dipping his head back down to send a quick little ‘hi’ . he watched katsuki read it, look back up at izuku, back and forth a few times, face pale and sitting in a momentary shock.
“you’re fucking kidding me.” katsuki choked out, and izuku bit his tongue, hiding behind his phone just a bit in case the explosive boy, well… exploded.
“hi, dyna,” izuku murmured into the quiet of the room, a small, cheeky grin on his face. he didn’t dare get up. not yet, at least. “you won’t break up with me now that you know, right?”
the pause between them was enough for izuku to flinch a bit. he watched katsuki for a while, taking in how he sat there, debating with the war going on inside his head. never in a million years did izuku think his relationship he’d held close since middle school would potentially end like this , but if it did, he’d be glad just from knowing the identity of dyna. katsuki opened his mouth to answer, and izuku held his breath-
“hey, bakugo!” eijirou chirped, exiting the kitchen with mina trailing behind, the pink girl carrying a few bags of snacks for the three to share. ejirou tossed an arm over his friend’s shoulder, which izuku bit back a frown at. he exchanged a wave with the red haired boy, and kirishima took that time to look between the two of them, who were talking from other sides of the room. “what were you guys talking about?”
the unanimous “nothing” that came from the pair of childhood friends was enough for mina and eijirou to glance at one another, shrugging and just dropping it.
“alright, movie in my room!” mina grinned, waving a quick goodbye to izuku before whisking her two friends away, katsuki glancing over his shoulder at the boy who was his boyfriend this entire time. if one were to look hard enough, if they knew katsuki like izuku did, they’d notice the soft look flickering in his gaze before he turned away.
a few minutes passed before a vibration startled izuku out of his thoughts, his cheeks warming at the words highlighting his screen.
dynakat: come to my dorm at 11.
and izuku did. eleven rolled around, and izuku was standing outside katsuki’s dorm room, donned in his sleep t-shirt and a pair of fluffy all might themed pajama pants. he stood there for a moment, wondering if this really was a good idea after all. katsuki would most likely break up with him, and izuku would lose both his best friend and love of his life in one singular conversation.
yet, despite all of that, izuku knocked nevertheless.
the door seemed to open immediately, and izuku could barely get out a quick “hey” before the blonde grasped his wrist and tugged him inside, closing the door behind the two of them, a squeak of surprise slipping past the younger at the sudden movement.
“are we… gonna talk about it?” izuku questioned, a frown crossing onto his face. “about us?”
another pause passed, before katsuki shook his head. “later.”
before izuku could even react, his boyfriend took his face in his hands, and kissed him for the first time.
izuku had never kissed anyone a day in his life, but by god , was it his new favorite thing. katsuki’s hands, consistently warm due to the way his quirk operated, cradled his face, fingers dipping into green curls, mouth gentle against his own, and izuku was fucking addicted. it had taken him a second to actually process it, but when his brain finally registered, his hands slid up katsuki’s chest to wind around his neck. both boys stood there, holding one another as if they’d never be able to do it again.
after all these years of online love and pining for a person over a screen, it only took a few coincidences of messages and vibrations to bring two boys together who didn’t even know the love of their life was right in front of them all this time.
“i love you,” izuku murmured against katsuki’s lips, green eyes half lidded to meet the other’s matching stare. “i’m glad it was you.”
“i love you too, ‘zuku.”
katsuki kissed him again, and izuku could only melt into his hold once more.
the next morning, if anyone were to go looking for izuku, he wouldn’t be in his dorm, but curled up in katsuki’s arms in the blonde’s room, holding onto a piece of home he could finally call his own.
