Chapter 1: Carl's house

Chapter Text

August 15, 2038 ; 8:25 P.M

I was born in the year 2015. I was in the police deportment still doing paper work to let them transfer me into my father's department. I wanted to be closer to family but was stuck out here because of course I had to take. But it's worth it meaning I'm one of the youngest detectives around. I have to thank my friend for paying for all these courses for me. If he didn't then I wouldn't be here. I have to stop by and say hi to my favorite android as well. He is so much like an older brother to me. I hope my dad didn't do nothing bad while I was gone for so long either. I smiled knowing I did this for my little brother Cole. My smile frowned when the day his death came to me. I shook it off. That day changed my dad. No, nope, no negative thoughts. I raised my hand to place my hair back behind my ear. I should really get a haircut soon. As I packed up, I walked out seeing most of the people in front of the TV. I checked the time seeing it was 8:41 p.m. Why not. I joined them seeing the news. An android held a little girl hostage on top of the building. O my god. It was a PL600 android. The camera turned to the other android that was wrapping his tie around the cop's arm. It was am RK800. An android I never seen before. I do admit he looked kind of cute. I shook my head to get the thought out and kept watching. The RK800 kept talking to the other android. After minutes the PL600 started to fall back. O no! the RK800 ran to them, pulling the little girl and pushed the PL600 back, making the little girl land safely on the roof, but both the androids falling off the building. My heart drop. The S.W.A.T took over the scene. I walked away. That was the day when I started studying on cases of Deviants.

It was too early for this but I know I needed to get there in time. I finally made it to my destination. I parked the rental truck, prepping myself to walk up the door and knock. I didn't call or anything to let them know I was coming. I hope he's here. I walked out the car, locking it, and going up to the door. I took a couple deep breaths before knocking. After a minute the door opened. I smiled seeing him and he did to.

"(Y/n). What an unexpected surprise. Come in." I walked myself in as he closed the door behind. I hugged him tight.

"It's nice seeing you, Markus." He hugged back. When we let go, I notice his clothes were torn a bit.

"Markus what happened to your clothes?!" Carl would never do something like this.

"Don't worry it was just some demonstrators in the street, (Y/N)," he said. I huffed my cheeks.

"I hope they didn't hurt you big bro." I hate when people hurt incident androids. Markus is one of the nicest androids I know. I meant Markus the day after Cole was born, I was at school being bullied and Markus came out of nowhere protecting me. Markus told the teacher and the teacher toke me back, as Markus was about to walk off, I called for him and he turned. I asked if He could take me home. She was alright with it and Markus smiled. I felt bad because he may be late to his owner. I asked if he can take me to his home and he said yes. When we made it I meant the owner saying sorry I got his android late. Carl thanked me for saying sorry and told me his name was Markus. I smiled. I hanged the rest of the day there till it was late. Carl convinced Leo to take me home. He did after cursing at me for the 100th time that day. My dad was worried but told him the whole story of what happened. He nodded off after putting Cole to bed. After days of stress from my dad trying to find a babysitter for cheap. I convinced my dad that I had someone who could babysit us while he was at work, but of course he didn't like the idea but I told him he was a nice person. He said alright and told me how much. When I got out of school, I ran to Carl's house remembering the route Markus toke. I knocked the door being welcomed by Markus again. I asked for Carl and he said he was painting. He showed me where he was and then I asked Carl. He loved the idea. I told him how much would it cost and he said for free. I jumped up happy. I would walk all the way to the house with Cole in my arms till Carl found out and told Leo to come pick me up with Markus but of course Leo said no, so Markus would come and pick me and Cole up. When Leo picked on me Markus would come and protect me. He was like a big brother to me. I was weak when I was younger which was why I got picked on a lot but now I got stronger and faster.

"I am very much fine. Carl will very be happy to see you." I nodded as Markus lead me to where Carl was. He was in the painting room. As Carl finished Markus went to his side.

"What's your verdict Markus?" Carl asked not knowing I was here.

"Yes- there is something about it. Something I can't quite define. I guess I like it."

"The truth is I have nothing left to say anymore.... Each day that goes by brings me closer to the end... I'm just an old man clinging to his brushes..."

"Carl..." how Markus said that, I could feel the sadness in his voice. I didn't know that could happen.

"But enough about me..." Carl turned his chair. "Let's see if you have any talent! Give it a try. Try painting something."

"Paint? But, what I.... Painting what?" He sounded so confused. I find it cute.

"Anything you want. Give it a try" Carl said

"Yea Markus paint something. Anything" Markus turned to me and I gave him a smile. Carl saw me, giving me a smile. I can greet him in a bit but I want to see Markus do this. Markus toke the palette from Carl then looked toward the canvas. He took a moment then looked around before started painting. After a minute, he finished.

"That is a perfect copy. Of reality. But painting is not about replicating the world, it's about interpreting it, improving it, showing something, you see."

"Carl, I don't...think I can do that. It's not in my program...I..." I frowned. That's not true. I remember when I was little Markus did a painting with me. It's the one I cherish most, but of course he may forget since his LED turned blue right after it was yellow.

"Go on, go, try, grab that canvas." Markus toke down the canvas he painted replacing it with a new one. I walked to Carl standing behind him.

"Do something for me, for us, close your eyes. Trust me." Markus nodded closing his eye's. "Try to imagine something that doesn't exist. Something you've never seen. Now, concentrate on how it makes you feel...and let your hand drift across the canvas." Markus raised the paintbrush and started to paint. I watch as Markus shifted the brush back and forth. After Markus finished, I smiled big. Markus faced us. "O my god..." It was two hands, reaching for each other. Darkness and light. Then I heard the doors slide open. I turned my heard seeing Leo. He looked at us.

"Hey, Dad."

"Leo... I didn't hear you come in." I felt shivers come though me.

"Ah, I was in the neighborhood...I thought I'd stop by... It's been a while, right?"

"You all, right?" I took a couple steps back as Carl rolled his chair back as Leo toke steps closer. "You don't look so good."

"Oh, yeah, yeah, I'm fine... Hey listen, uh... I need some cash, dad." I should have known.

"Again? What happened to the money I just gave you?" Leo fidgets a bit which scares me a bit. I may be a cop but I don't want to hurt him.

"Uh, well, it just goes, you know?" Leo said.

"Yeah...Yeah you're on it again, aren't you?" I frowned. I actually thought Leo quit. He looked fine last time I saw him but now...

"No, no, no, I swear it's not that..."

"Don't lie to me, Leo"

"What difference does it make? I just need some cash, that's all!" I felt defensive.

"Sorry...The answer's no"

"What? Why?" Leo said taking a step forward. I pulled Carl's wheelchair back.

"You know why." Leo looked at me and at Markus. Gazing at us with hatred.

"Yeah, yeah... I think I do know why. You rather pay for someone else course just so they can be a cop," he said staring me down. "Someone who isn't your family." I wanted to punch him. He then walked toward Markus. "You'd rather take care of your plastic toy here than your own son, eh. Tell me dad, what's it got that I don't? It's smarter? More obedient? Not like me, right? But you know what? This thing is not your son. IT'S A FUCKING MACHINE!"

"Leo, that's enough." Leo turned to us. "ENOUGH!"

"You don't care about anything except yourself and your goddamn paintings. You've never loved anyone. You've never love me, Dad...You've never love me." Leo said leaving. When he finally left, I went to Markus.

"Are you alright Markus?" I asked.

"I am fine (y/n)." He said plainly. I placed hand on his shoulder

"Don't listen to him Markus. You are not just some toy. He is right about one thing. You are not like him. Your better." I said smiling. I saw his LED light change color. It was yellow for a moment then turned back to blue.

"Thank you (y/n). I appreciate that," he said, giving me a smile.

"Sorry Carl. I should have said hi before that happened but I just."

"Don't worry (y/n) it's fine," he said, giving me a smile as well. I went and hugged him.

"You don't listen either Carl you're the best and Leo has to be so blind to see how caring you are." Carl hugged back.
